1 New Integrated GC Guard Columns for Built-In Protection

2 GUARDIAN: Quick and Easy to Set-up With Guardian you get your column plus 5 or 10 meters of additional integrated deactivated tubing. However, it s quick and easy to replace your existing column with a Guardian. GC s with Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) A GC with EPC controls typically asks you to manually enter your new column dimensions so that it may calculate the flow rate. It is necessary to account for the additional 5 or 10 meters of guard column and input accordingly. For instance, if you were using a typical 30-meter column and you added a 10-meter Guardian, you should enter the overall column length as a 40-meter column. Next, inject a standard test mix, evaluate the changes in chromatography, and further optimize your new Guardian by increasing or decreasing head pressure as necessary.* GC s without Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) Using an older system where column head pressure is fixed and flow rate is manually calculated - at a specific temperature - requires a slightly different adjustment. We suggest you increase starting head pressure by about 15% for 5-meter Guardian and 30% for 10-meter Guardian columns. Next, inject a standard test mix, evaluate the changes in chromatography, and further optimize your new Guardian by increasing or decreasing head pressure as necessary.* * Please remember these are intended only as guidelines. We strongly recommend you actually measure linear flow rate by injection of an unretained peak such as methane or by using a flow meter. Small identification labels are placed at the guard end of every column. Besides labeling, the entire 5-meter or 10-meter guard section is left ungrouped as a small loop of heat resistant string surrounding the rest of the column; you will always be able to instantly identify which end of your column is the Guardian end. 4 Benefits of Using a Guard Column 4 Extends column lifetime 4 Traps non-volatile contaminants 4 Prevents stationary phase damage 4 Increases focusing for low boiling compounds Guardian extends column lifetime when analyzing samples that are acidic/basic, contain inorganic salts, or contain other impurities. Contaminants are trapped within the first 4-6 inches of the integrated guard section of column, thus allowing easy removal of contaminated guard section during normal maintenance procedures Since the guard section of column does not contain stationary phase, separation is not affected by maintenance trimming. As a result, column lifetime is typically increased by at least 20%. Effect of Guard Column on Chromatography The guard portion of the column doesn t significantly effect separation or retention as is shown in the examples below. Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) separations exhibit similar resolution without changes in retention time. Should you be using a guard column? If you are working with samples that contain unknown impurities, chances are you should be using a guard. Guard columns help protect your expensive analytical column by: 1 Trapping non-volatiles that would otherwise deposit on the column 2 Prevent acidic and/or basic matrix compounds from stripping the stationary phase 3 Reduces retention time shifts due to column maintenance. Bottom line, if you want longer column life, you should be using a guard column!
