Tran.portstioe and Public Utilities Division, G.SWrong **T2J TRAFFIC REPORT OF RIJLWA!5 OF CMiAIIA MARCH, Canadian railways hauled an impressive 13,242,676 tons of domastic and foreign origin revenue freight during larch, to register an increase of some 878,700 tons or 7.1 p.c. over the sane month of last year. This established a new peacetime voluse for the month exceeded only by March, 1944 at 15,525,007 tons. Loading at stations In Canada advencad 11.2 p.c. at 9,596,764 tone compared with 8,451,049 tons one year earlier while tongs received from foreign (U.S.) cectlons dropped from 3,912,924 tons to 3,845,912 or by 1.7 p.c. Increased loadings were recorded over March last year in all areas except the Prairie provinces where lighter grain and coal moveaents contributed to the decline of 125,205 tons. With restored production in the Move Scotia coal wines, the provincial total rose from 267,379 tons in March, 1947 to 830,525 tons this year. The Quebec aggregate of tons loaded and received from foreign connections improved from 2,380,872 to 2,504,502 tons while the Ontario total was up 2.6 p.c. or 154,204 tons at 6,091,037 tons for the current March. The B.C. loadings were up 14,004 tons over the preceding March with 890,069 tons. Due to smaller crop. in 1947, agricultural products moved during the month were down to 2,030,792 tons against 2,481,579 tons one year earlier but the mining Industry was more active contrltwating 4,468,254 tons against 3,638,015 while foreøt products increased 349,952 tons at 2,184,166. The manufactures and miscellaneous group rose 130,570 tons over the previous larch with 4,534,182 tons of freight hauled during the month under review. Considered by eoditiea, loadings of all grainc except fla.xaeed showed receasion from March of 1947 when eastern feed requirements were more urgent. Wheat moved declined 55,050 tons, corn 122,657 tone, oats were off 105,735 tone at 159,246 and rye was down 10,702 tons, flour was tons lighter than In March of the preceding year. However, cattle and togs moved In greater volia, showing increases of 1,889 tons and 7,705 tons respectively but other packing house products, eggs, butter, cheese, wool, hides and leather moved in smaller voluse. Among mine products bitad.nous coal Increased 473,849 tons to 1,629,363 while anthracite, mostly import.d, rose 73,635 tons. Copper ores were up 26,230 tons over the previous March and Other ores and concentrates rose 104,510 tons. Crude petroleus totalled 122,545 tons, up 49 p.c. or 40,551 tons. Pulpwood was featured in forest products with loadings of 1,204,046 tons during the macta, an increase of no less than 368,741 tons over larch, 1947, but cordwood, 1tber and timber were down. Among manufactured products gasoline rose from 161,504 to 190,286 tons but p.troleus oils,etc. declined 32,954 tons. Sugar was up 17,528 tons, pig iron 18,446, iron and steel tons and cement 54,521 tons at 143,051. Autos, trucks and parts moved in greater volume with 227,243 tons hauled, an increu.e of 17,199 tons or 8.2 p.c. from the seize month one year ago. Other manufactures and miscellaneous at 1,518,161 tons showed a gain of 85,355 tons in the month-to-month comparison. Manufactured items moving in lighter volume Included wick, sewer pipe, t'urniture, beverages down some 20 p.o., newsprint paper off 29,593 at 368,072 tons, woodpu].p, fish of I nearly 5,000 tons, canned goods down 33,723 tons at 89,827 and 1.c.l. merchandise registering a decline of 35,269 tons, off from 403,210 to 567,941 tons. Receipts from foreign connections for delivery in Canada were 2,044,307 tons against 2,056,255 one year earlier. Declines in receipts of corn, fruit, vegetables, other agricultural products, wool, hides and leather, petzolems products, lumber, fertilizers, canned goods and l.c.1. merchandise omarestiag with Increased import, of anthracite coal, cøke, other ores, petroleum, gasoline, sugar and agricultural implements.
