No. Y DATA (EN - Rev. 000) Function The are piston-type and are used for generating compressed air to supply the air brake system, air suspension and auxiliary air requirements on agricultural or off-road vehicles. The Compressor range options are: base or mounted belt or gear driven air or water cooled single cylinder or twin cylinder through-drive capability for power transmission from the engine to drive an auxiliary unit, e.g. an oil pump, steering pump or fuel pump. Lubrication and water cooling of the compressor are supplied by the corresponding engine functions. The choice of compressor depends on the total air demand of the vehicle and the available sizes to suit the engine chosen for the vehicle. In general air compressors are designed in close collaboration with engine manufacturers and the compressor chosen has to suit the chosen engine. When the vehicle s air system reaches the desired pressure it has been the traditional practice to let the compressor pump air to atmosphere through an unloader valve, however, many Knorr-Bremse air compressors now include an Energy Saving System (ESS) which recycles the compressed air within the compressor during the off-load phase and consequently reduces power consumption. 7 Commercial Vehicle Systems Installation The Air Compressor must be mounted on the engine in accordance with the engine manufacturer s specification. Pipework connecting to the air compressor must be of sufficient size for the air, water and lubricating oil flow. The delivery pipe should run downhill to assist the drainage of condensed water and should have sufficient cooling capability to ensure that the temperature of the air entering the first device in the system meets the specification of that device. Air-cooled compressors require forced air cooling in line with the product specification. It is strongly recommended that all new compressor installations are inspected and approved by a Knorr-Bremse engineer. Servicing are serviceable with a variety of service kits covering the cylinder head, valve plate, gaskets and pistons.
