The driver pack is compatible with MassLynx. It is not compatible with ACQUITY UPLC systems intended for IVD use, and marked accordingly. 2 What s new in this release The ACQUITY UPLC M-Class Driver Pack implements new features, enhancements, and defect corrections to the instrument drivers, firmware, and utility applications included in the driver pack. New features Instrument or component M-Class Driver Pack ACQUITY Inlet Switch Utility Fluid Integrity Test Trap Valve Manager Enables the ability to run two μbsms at the same time, which allows you to support gradient elution on one column while performing column re-equilibration or sample loading on a second column. A load ahead function, which loads the next sample prior to the current sample completing analysis, prepares for the next step in a multi-step, multi-column elution profile. For direct injection, the sample is loaded into the sample loop. For trapping in multi-pump systems, the sample is loaded onto the trap column. The driver pack supports all M-Class system configurations using two method types: direct injection and trapping. Enables easy switching of the inlet to the mass spectrometer (MS) while using one workstation. The M-Class Driver Pack is compatible with the ACQUITY Inlet Switch Utility and instruments controlled by Driver Pack 4 or Driver Pack 3. A semi-automated set-pressure diagnostic test. A module with two switching valves, which can contain one column and control as many as four columns in two CM-AUX modules (optional). Enhancements Instrument or component ACQUITY UPLC M-Class system The upper operating-pressure limit increases to 103,500 kpa (1035 bar, 15,000 psi). The supported flow-rate range for gradient elution is 200 nl/min to 100 μl/min. HDX Manager The maximum flow rate increases to 100 µl/min in the µbsm and B- side pump of the ASM and to 1000 µl/min in the A-side pump of the ASM. The upper operating-pressure limit increases to 103,421 kpa (1034 bar, 15,000 psi). The PCS (Product Change System) numbers identify issues that Waters personnel monitor within a system change request tracking tool. General PCS Number Inlet editor or instrument method editor Inlet editor or instrument method editor The correct gradient profile fails to appear when you edit a method. Workaround: Before you begin to edit any method, close all open instrument methods. Then proceed with the edit by right-clicking the name of an inlet file in the sample list and selecting Edit. You cannot generate new methods in projects that are not default projects. Workaround: From the data application, create or select a system and a project before creating an instrument method. When creating the project, select "Create using existing project as template". Select a template project that includes the full set of default methods (Default.pro or any project created from Default.pro). When developing the first method in the new project, create a new method or open a previously saved method as the starting point. Do not use the default method. To prevent empty method files, select and review each ICS editor before saving the new method. Page 5 of 15

Workaround: To retrieve the instrument data, open the Waters Service profile. Event tables do not always continue after a run completes. MassLynx ICS does not, apparently, issue a SomRmtStopMethod command between lines in a sample set but only at the end of a run. Between the end of a run and the issuance of a setup method, events programmed beyond the end of the runtime run. nbsm and nsm do execute events past the runtime. All events receive a StopMethod (AbortData) command from ICS if a data channel is enabled, but the resultant behavior is not consistent among the instruments: TVM cannot differentiate between an end-of-sample-set action and a legitimate abort command. SM ignores the command. BSM stops the event runner; nbsm appears to be different. TUV does not stop the event runner. High-throughput, two-pump trapping with the load-ahead option uses two different trap columns and flow paths. Each path contributes to different delay volumes and potentially different analyte selectivity, which can result in a retention time shift Console When several messages appear simultaneously in the System Status area, certain messages, such as "Waiting for flow ramp", can be truncated. Workaround: To read all messages, maximize the console window System Older instrument methods (made with version 1.42 and older) are not compatible with version Workaround: Create new instrument methods for the M- Class driver pack MassLynx MassLynx starts a run but fails to inject a sample. Important: After specifying the flow rate, you must wait for the system to start the flow before starting the queue. When you change the flow rate via the console, the system delays further action for 30 seconds, waiting for the flow rate to change. Sometimes, when you start or restart the queue, an error message states that the system is not ready to run and that you must reset communications to start the run. At other times, the system acknowledges the start command, delays action as expected, but fails to start. Reason: When you specify a system flow rate from the console, the µsm-fl is actually running a procedure involving all the modules in the system. If you then try to start or restart a sample queue, MassLynx Page 6 of 15

7 Waters Pump Controller does not start, and the processes become unsynchronized. Workaround: If the system acknowledges the run start but fails to start the flow, reset communications MassLynx The M-Class installers copy only the instrument default methods to the Default.pro folder. So if you do not base a new project on Default.pro, the default methods are missing, resulting in errors. See also: Guidelines in the "Create an instrument method" topic in online Help. Workaround: To create a new MassLynx project, select the project wizard, and select "Create using existing project as template", where the existing project is C:\MassLynx\Default.pro System A SolventMonitorExe error can occur during an overnight run. One CM-AUX channel is enabled, to monitor the effect of data channels of CM-AUX. The SolventMonitorExe file is a MassLynx executable file. SolventMonitor does not have dedicated logging. No data are lost System The maximum number of supported channels is 31. With an HT-2D configuration consisting of 2 µbsm, ASM, µsm, and TVM, the maximum number of channels that you can activate is 32 (including 4 CM-AUX channels), but the system can complete only one injection. Workaround: Limit the number of supported channels to 31 or fewer System Under the following conditions, M-Class online Console Help is not accessible after DP4 installation: 1. Install M-Class Driver Pack. Result: Console Help refers to M-Class instruments. 2. Install DP4 Driver Pack. Result: Console Help refers to DP4 instruments. 3. Use the ACQUITY Inlet Switch Utility to switch to M-Class. Result: Console Help still refers to DP4 instruments, not M-Class instruments. Reason: Only one console-level Help file is active at a time, and that file is the last one installed. Page 7 of 15

8 28967 System After installing the ACQUITY UPLC M-Class Driver Pack and then the Driver Pack 4 on the same system, an ACQUITY µsm error can appear "Instrument Not Found". Workaround: In a system that includes both ACQUITY Driver Pack 4 and ACQUITY M-Class Driver Pack, use the ACQUITY Inlet Switch Utility to switch between driver packs. Refer to Appendix A, Using the ACQUITY Inlet Switch Utility, in the ACQUITY UPLC M-Class Driver Pack Installation and Configuration Guide System The shutdown method fails to shut down two of the system's three pumps because the shutdown method editor event in MassLynx, LC Pump Off, can shut down only one pump. (Note, however, that the Stop Flow event shuts down all of a system's ACQUITY-based pumps.) Workaround: Use contact closures. Events in the startup and shutdown editor drive event-out pins on the rear panel of mass spectrometers. In the MassLynx startup and shutdown editor, use the events MS Event Out 1 and MS Event Out 2 to stop the flow for the two pumps that fail to shut down when you use the LC Pump Off event. When you do so, both pumps stop after the queue runs to completion System When uninstalling previous versions of the Waters ACQUITY UPLC M-Class Driver Pack, select Remove. Important: Do not use the Repair option of the Deployment Manager. Always use Remove to uninstall previous versions Console The Save Plot File function can display an incorrect date for the time range. Workaround: 1. On the Plots page, right-click, and select Save Plot File. Result: The Time Range end default value can be as many as 4 days ahead of the actual time. 2. Specify a valid time value System After installing the ACQUITY UPLC M-Class Driver Pack and then the Driver Pack 4 on the same system, DP4's Verify Files function fails. HDX Systems PCS Number HDX manager The channel name for a saved HDX plot is "Sample Manager", not "HDX Manager". Page 8 of 15

9 30092 HDX manager In the HDX Interactive Display page, when you set the chamber temperature to 0, and then set the digestion temperature to a new value, the chamber temperature turns off, whereas it should stay at 0. ionkey/ms Systems PCS Number ionkey/ms System and TRIZAIC UPLC sources The automated source recognition function fails or operates intermittently. Source-recognition support errors cause no operational harm and are not considered defects in MassLynx. Latched and unlatched clamps can cause different errors. MassLynx can recognize the TRIZAIC source as "NanoLockSpray", which appears in the MS Tune window as a NanoLockSpray:6 source. Nevertheless, when such a TRIZAIC source is connected to a Xevo TQ-S or TQ-MS instrument, MassLynx recognizes the source as "TrizaicLockSpray", which appears in the MS Tune window as a Trizaic 11 source. MassLynx can recognize the ionkey source as "ionkey", which appears in the MS Tune window as an ionkey source. When an ionkey source is not attached, an "ionkey 11" message appears. Xevo TQ-S on SCN 905: A "Low Flow Mode" option to shut off the capillary and emitter voltage when waiting for an inlet start has been added. Workaround: 1. Remove the microfluidic device from the source, and then reinsert it. 2. Ensure the cables are functional and properly connected ionkey/ms Systems In Data channels, these locations in the MassLynx and ICS Console erroneously display the word "column" instead of "ikey ", "ionkey", or "source": MassLynx's Analog Chromatogram dialog box Data tab in nsm Instrument method nsm console page Plots page Page 9 of 15

10 27681 ionkey/ms Systems The driver version for the USB video converter may be incorrect. Workaround: Download and install the correct drivers for the camera in the ionkey source from the manufacturer's Web site: US/products/converters/dfgusb2pro/ Solvent managers PCS Number Solvent managers Custom BSM and ASM names are not always applied. Reason: The following screens can display default names instead of custom names when space for the names is limited: Plot names Maintenance counters Some messages in solvent manager control panels Solvent managers With the interactive mode of the μbsm or ASM enabled and the valve in the vent position, you cannot always change the flow rate using the controls on the μbsm or ASM Interactive Display page. Even though the Set Flow dialog box opens and accepts modifications, the flow conditions do not change, and resetting each module via the console fails to change the module's state in the MassLynx. Workaround: From the data application's inlet method, select Reset Communications Solvent managers The standalone console's Advanced pump parameters incorrectly display unconfigured system modules. Reason: The standalone console's advanced pump parameters are used by third-party data applications. The console used by third-party data applications differs in these ways from that used by MassLynx : There is no Waters Pump Controller (WPC) and no analogous configuration (for WPC). At this time, third-party support does not include 2D (two µbsm) configurations. The Advanced dialog box therefore displays only one µbsm and one ASM for users to select. Page 10 of 15

11 28081 Solvent managers For higher flow rates, measured flow totals do not combine to equal the set flow value. A discrepancy can exist between the total measured flow and the specified flow when the flow exceeds ~6 to 14 µl/min, depending on the solvent used. The total measured flow rate does not approximate the specified flow rate. Reason: The µbsm runs in two different modes: The closed-loop mode falls within the range of the flow sensors, and on the basis of that feedback, the adjusts the flow for lower rates (<6.0 µl/min for organic solvent and <13.92 µl/min for aqueous solvent). The open-loop mode falls outside the range of the sensors, and the flow rate is mechanically determined, without the benefit of feedback Solvent managers You must wait for the pumps to attain the specified flow rate before starting an acquisition. You cannot control or modify any system functions from the console until the data application completes the run and relinquishes control of the system. Workaround: Avoid controlling or modifying any system functions via the console until the run ends. Allow the pumps to attain the specified flow rate before starting an acquisition Solvent managers In the µbsm and ASM, the alarm online Help button is missing from the control panel, top form, and log. Reason: Active links to online Help are not available for the solvent managers. Workaround: Press the F1 key. In the Contents tab, click µbinary Solvent Manager or Auxiliary Solvent Manager > Troubleshooting the µbsm or ASM > Instrument messages, and then locate the name of the alarm in the Help topics Solvent managers You cannot activate µbsm's Interactive Display page under some conditions. In the console, on the Interactive Display page for the µbsm, click the Control button, to activate the page. The page briefly becomes active, but then immediately reverts to inactive (links change color back to purple and dialog boxes do not open). Nevertheless, the Control button indicates that the page is active. Workaround: If the ASM or µbsm interactive page links are not active, reset communications from MassLynx Solvent managers When the system is changing the flow rate, do not specify a different flow rate on the Set Flow dialog box. Workaround: After the flow rate reaches its intended value, you can initiate a change to the flow rate. Page 11 of 15

12 29856 Solvent managers In the SM solvent library, when the alias name is the same as the custom solvent name, an error occurs. Workaround: Ensure the solvent name differs from the alias name. If the error has already occurred, do as follows: 1. In the C:\Program Files\Waters Instruments\Settings folder, delete or rename that SolventLibrary.xml file. 2. Restart the inlet editor. 3. Create a new method. Result: The SolventLibrary icon on the nsm works, and the new SolventLibrary.xml file is created Auxiliary solvent manager Binary solvent manager Auxiliary solvent manager While priming, the auxiliary solvent manager reports the flow rate as 4 µl/min, whereas the actual flow rate is 4000 µl/min (4 ml/min). After upgrading the µbsm firmware from v1.42 to v1.53, the instrument firmware in the Autoloader window is not available. Workaround: Refer to the ACQUITY UPLC M-Class Driver Pack Installation and Configuration Guide. The maximum allowable flow rate for the auxiliary solvent manager is 100 µl/min. However, the control panel and console allow you to enter a flow rate of 1000 µl/min. Workaround: The method editor enforces the maximum flow rate of 100 µl/min. Sample managers PCS Number Sample managers When characterizing the needle seal, on the console log table, the description for the needle and loop calibration shows the needle seal but not the descriptions of the needle and loop volume calibration. Workaround: When characterizing the volume for the sample loop and syringes, if the console log does not include results, click Interactive Display, to read the measured loop volume. You can measure the needle and loop volumes by selecting Maintain > Characterize > Characterize Needle and Loop Volumes. Page 12 of 15

13 28514 Sample managers Western Digital SmartWare services cause a communication error affecting sample managers. Western Digital external drive services prevent sample managers from communicating with MassLynx. Workaround: Stop the Western Digital services, and change them from automatic start to manual start Sample managers After downgrading a sample manager from v1.53 to v1.42, you cannot create a new inlet method for the autosampler. Workaround: 1. Remove v1.53 including nsm. 2. Install v1.42 including nsm. 3. If you still cannot create a new inlet method, contact Waters technical support Sample manager The Method Editor and the AutoSampler section of Experimental reports can display the ikey cool-down time even when an ionkey is not installed nanoacquity UPLC sample manager with heating and trapping module (nanosm-htm) If your system includes a nanosm-htm, you can double-click the nanoacquity Sample Manager online Help link on the Documentation CD. Alternative: Copy the "nanoacqsm_classic_nanosm.chm" file from the documentation CD to your local drive, and then double-click the file. The following topics are specific to a nanosm-htm: To defrost the sample manager, see the topic, "Defrosting the sample manager". To turn lights on and off, see the topic, "Turning on or off the sample manager lights". To specify the volumes for the sample loop, needle, and syringe, see the topic, "Specifying the volume for the sample loop, needle and syringe". To replace a sample syringe, wash syringe, and needle, see the topic, "Characterizing the volume for the sample loop and needle". 14 TVM PCS Number Trap valve manager MassLynx does not stop the current injection when an error occurs. Workaround: Enable a shutdown method, and configure the system for it. TUV detector PCS Number TUV detector TUV console Help: Web page fails to appear. When you select TUV in the console, and then from the Help menu you select "ACQUITY UPLC Console help", a message appears stating "Cannot display the webpage". This problem, which involves the infrastructure in DP3 and DP4 for nanoacquity and M-Class, can occur randomly. Workaround: Select the Search tab, specify TUV, and then click List Topics TUV detector The ACQUITY M-Class systems do not display the correct type of flow cell in the TUV detector. Analytical data collection is unaffected TUV detector After restarting the ICS, the postrun report does not contain TUV flow cell information for the first injection. However, flow cell information is present for successive injections. Workaround: Perform two acquisitions before starting your actual sample injections. Anti-virus considerations If you are using real-time virus scanning, exclude the data system and instruments folders and subfolders as shown below. Some real-time virus scanners can mistake normal data acquisition and instrument control for virus activity and thus interfere with proper operations. Full-system scans and live updates can be network-intensive, disk-intensive, and CPU-intensive, and they can also interfere with normal data acquisition. Schedule scans and updates for idle times when data acquisition does not occur. Exclude these folders for MassLynx installations: C:\Program Files\Waters Instruments, and its sub-folders ( C:\Program Files (x86)\waters Instruments on 64-bit machines). the MassLynx installation folder, usually C:\Masslynx, and its sub-folders. Certain anti-virus program features like "intrusion prevention" and "tamper protection" can also interfere with normal operation. Disable them as well. Page 14 of 15

15 Requalification guidelines The ACQUITY UPLC M-Class Driver Pack includes instrument driver and firmware for laboratory instruments, servers, and workstations. As with any change in a regulated environment, follow your organization's standard operating procedures for managing changes. This update has been designed not to alter the physical specifications of system modules or the systems themselves, and Waters believes that methods run and data generated on modules before and after the update will be identical. Nevertheless, after a risk-based review of the changes detailed in these release notes, users in a regulated environment may determine it necessary to consider and document what, if any, requalification of modules, the chromatographic system, or the chromatographic data system (CDS) are required by their own standard operating procedures relating to change control. Use the appropriate qualification methods outlined below to verify installation and correct operation: To confirm that the driver pack installation has not negatively affected any critical system functions, and that the new files have loaded properly, consider performing a Installation Qualification (IQ). To confirm the firmware files installed on the modules are correctly installed, compare the checksum values in the product release notes to the checksum values displayed in the console. To confirm an instrument's operation with the newly loaded driver and firmware, consider performing an Operational Qualification (OQ) for the updated instrument or system. To confirm performance, control, and communications of the instruments in your system, consider conducting a Performance Qualification (PQ) (user or vendor PQ) or System Suitability test. Where multiple identical systems are involved, a risk-based approach to qualification activities can be an important consideration. Requalifying the instrument driver, firmware, and hardware when upgrading is covered under the Total Assurance Plan with System Qualification Option in the following cases: During yearly requalification under the plan. If loading this release is required for operation of a new module or system, where qualification of the new module or system is covered under the plan. Requalification of the CDS and computers after a driver upgrade may or may not be included in Assurance Plans from the CDS vendor. Review your Total Assurance Plan to determine which services are covered and which are not covered. For situations not covered under the plan, Waters can nevertheless perform the qualification. In such cases, however, additional charges would apply.
