4 Installation of the VAPUR Interface First, place your system in Standby mode. Then, disconnect the waste hose from the bottom of the XEVO source, as well as all gas, syringe, and voltage connections. Carefully remove the factory XEVO source from the Mass Spectrometer interface and put it aside in a safe place. Make sure that the source isolation valve is CLOSED (pointed downward) before beginning installation of the DART source. Take hold of the cone gas nozzle handle, and use it to rotate the sampling cone assembly 90 degrees. It should now be pointing back at you in the horizontal position. 5 Using the cone extraction tool provided by Waters, remove the sample cone from the cone gas nozzle. The extraction tool can be found in the upper right-hand corner of the source area. Figure 4: The extraction tool being removed from the XEVO source area. Now, take the sample cone and insert it into the IonSense VAPUR piece as shown in the figure below. Make sure It fits snugly and that the there is a tight seal between the O-ring on the sample cone and the inside rim of the VAPUR attachment. 6 Take the VAPUR attachment and, holding the piece so that vacuum port is is oriented horizontally, slide the piece back into the ion block assembly. Then rotate it 90 degrees so that the vacuum port is now oriented downward and the ion transfer tube is facing outward from the instrument. Figure 6: The VAPUR attachment on the ion block. Remember to open the source isolation valve once the VAPUR piece is installed. Take the DART flange (large black piece) and match the keyholes with the two hinge pins on the left side of the mass spectrometer source area. Position the keyholes over the pins and slide the flange downward so it locks into position. Once the hinge is secured, close the flange until the lock on the right-hand side clicks shut. Ceramic Tube Remove the nut on the front of your interface and place it to the side. Take the ceramic tube provided with your interface and slide it through the silver piece on the front of the flange. Swing the flange open and place the rubber O-ring over the end of the ceramic tube that is inside the interface enclosure. Close the flange again and push the tube all the way until the O-ring clicks into place. Note: it may be difficult to push the tube in all the way. If done correctly you should notice a black line from the O-ring on the end of the tube after removal. Figure 9: The XEVO-DART interface with the ceramic tube installed. Place the nut over the tube and tighten it. If using a wrench take care not to tighten too much or the tube will crack and/or break. 7 DART-Waters XEVO Interface Manual

8 Attaching the DART or ID-CUBE to the Interface 1. First, open the flange by depressing the latch on the right side and swinging the flange open to the left. 2. Take the black silicone rubber tubing and attach it to the spigot on the bottom of the VAPUR piece. 3. Close the flange again, making sure that the silicone rubber tubing is run through the slit in the bottom of the flange and is not being squeezed or pinched against the source wall of the mass spectrometer. 4. Now, take the DART source and, using the provided 5 mm hex driver (4 mm for the DART 100 and 100S models) screw the two screws provided into the bottom of the flange Figure 10: The two mounting screws seen from the bottom of the DART source. 10 Source Detecting Plug/Defeating the Interlock Once the interface and source are successfully installed, you must insert the source probe plug provided by IonSense into the source probe panel to disable the Waters Instrument source interlock. This will allow for the automatic detection of an APCI-type source. If you are operating the ID-CUBE, you can now insert the High Voltage (HV) cable into the corresponding socket. 14 Figure 20: Disabling the source pressure test Once these boxes have been unchecked, close the source and re-run the pressure check test. It will still go through the test but you shouldn't be prevented from working. Once the test is complete turn your API gas off.
