3 Installing the Dionex ICS-1100/1600/2100 Auxiliary Valve A high-pressure Rheodyne valve is available as an auxiliary valve for the Thermo Scientific Dionex ICS-1100, ICS-1600, and ICS-2100 Ion Chromatography Systems. The electrically-activated, 2-position PEEK valve is offered in both 6- port and 10-port models. 4 There are two 10-Port Valve Kits. There is only one difference between the kits: P/N includes a 10-port valve with in ports. P/N includes a 10-port valve with in ports. 5 1. Installing the Auxiliary Valve 1. Turn off the main power to the Dionex ICS-1100/1600/ Open the front door of the instrument. 3. If installed, remove the column heater assembly (see Figure 1): a. Disconnect the tubing from the column heater outlet to the SRS Eluent In port at the Eluent In fitting. b. Disconnect the column heater inlet tubing from port C of the injection valve. c. Pull forward on the column heater to remove it, and set aside. 4. Remove the two Phillips screws behind the column heater and open the right-side panel of the instrument. Remove the two Phillips screws shown in Figure 1 and open the left-side panel of the instrument. 6. Remove the plastic plug filling the auxiliary valve opening by reaching through the right-side panel and pushing the plug out from inside the instrument. You may need to squeeze the locking tabs on the back of the plug (on the sides) as you push the plug forward. Doc /12 3

6 7. Attach the auxiliary valve label to the component panel: a. Remove the backing from the valve label. b. Position the label so that the port 1 indicator is at the top of the opening. c. Align the cutouts on each side of the label with the two mounting screw holes; center the large center hole in the label with the opening for the valve. d. Press the label firmly into place. 8. Remove the red plastic cap on the head of the new valve and the large ring nut securing the valve head to the drive portion of the valve. Set these parts aside, but do not discard. (You do not need to remove the head from the drive portion.) 9. Note the larger of the two connectors on the valve cable assembly. Insert this cable connector into the cable connector on the auxiliary valve PC board and push in until the locking tab clicks. 10. From the right side of the instrument, insert the valve through the rear of the opening in the component panel. 11. Check that port 1 on the valve is in the Port 1 position shown here; this orientation will ensure proper flow through the system. (Port numbers are inscribed on the center of the valve pod.) 12. Using a #1 Phillips screwdriver and the two screws supplied with the valve, attach the valve to the component panel. Tighten both screws securely. 4 Doc /12

7 13. Feed the valve cable past the rear of the standard 6-port injection valve and out the left side of the instrument. 14. Locate connector J20 on the main PC board; it is about halfway up on the right side, near the front edge of the board (see Figure 2). Position the valve cable connector so that the locking tab faces the front of the instrument. Then, insert the cable connector into J20 and push in until the locking tab clicks. Figure 2. Connecting the Auxiliary Valve Cable to the Main PC Board 15. Reinstall the large ring nut that secures the valve head to the drive portion of the valve. 16. Turn on the main power to the instrument. 8 2. Testing the Auxiliary Valve Operation 1. In the Thermo Scientific Dionex Chromeleon Server Configuration program, add the auxiliary valve to the instrument timebase. (In this example, the system is a Dionex ICS-1600.) a. Right-click the device in the timebase, and select Properties. b. Select the Options tab. c. Under Installed Options, note that the Valve 2 check box is selected. d. Select the Inject Valve tab. 6 Doc /12

9 e. In the Inject Valve Selection drop-down list box, select the valve that will function as the injection valve. This valve will be called Pump_InjectValve. NOTE If the current method does not use Valve_2, you may clear the check box preceding this from the list of devices. Doc /12 7

10 2. Verify that the valve responds correctly to Chromeleon commands: a. In Chromeleon, press the F8 key to open the Commands dialog box. b. Navigate to Pump_ECD > Valve_2. c. Click State to display the current valve state. Select the opposite state (A or B) and click Execute. If the valve is operating correctly, you will hear the valve motion (though faintly). Or, place a finger on the valve body to feel the vibration of the switching action. Go on to Section 3. 8 Doc /12

11 3. Completing the Auxiliary Valve Installation 1. Close the left-side and right-side panels of the instrument. Reinstall the four Phillips screws removed earlier. 2. Plumb the auxiliary valve as required for your application, using the PEEK tubing and fittings provided in the valve kit. NOTE If you do not want to plumb the valve now, place the red plastic cap removed earlier over the valve head. This will keep the valve clean until it is plumbed. Install the fittings as follows: a. Slide the bolt and split-cone ferrule fitting, in that order, onto the tubing. Make sure the split in the ferrule is toward the bolt. 10-port valve only: Use the long bolt for connections to the inner row of valve ports. Split in Ferrule Bolt b. Tighten the bolt fingertight, and then use a 1/4-inch wrench to tighten no more than one-quarter turn. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Overtightening the fittings can restrict the tubing ID, which can cause damage to the system. 3. Reinstall the column heater, if removed, and reconnect the inlet and outlet tubing. 4. Close the front door of the instrument. Doc /12 9
