3 Preface // OMEGA s Time Machines H. G. Wells wrote his popular science fiction novella, The Time Machine, in The narrator, called the Time Traveller, explains to his dinner guests that time is simply the fourth dimension and reveals that he has invented a machine that allows him to travel through time as easily as he would between two places. A year before the book was published, a different type of time machine had been launched in Biel. While its movement through the fourth dimension was not quite as dramatic as that described in Wells novel, the 19-ligne calibre was clearly a step into the future. Its unprecedented ease of repair and accuracy revolutionized the Swiss watch industry. The movement was named OMEGA for the 24th letter of the Greek alphabet a word that had come to represent perfection. In 1903, OMEGA officially became the only watchmaker to be named for one of its movements. Innovative movements have continued to be at the very heart of OMEGA s watches. In 1999, we launched the first watch equipped with a Co-Axial escapement and in 2007, our proprietary Co-Axial calibre 8500 signalled a revolution that was every bit as significant as the one sparked by the original OMEGA calibre. This year in Basel, we are again introducing new movements. Our Co-Axial family is being extended with GMT and day/date editions. The analogue/digital calibre 5666 offers dedicated functions designed for pilots and equips the new Spacemaster Z-33. OMEGA s innovation extends not only to technologies but to new materials. This year in Basel, Ceragold TM will have its world premiere in a striking new Seamaster Planet Ocean. The Time Traveller in the 19th century novel had figured out how to navigate through time in both directions. OMEGA s time machines only move forward but they do so with incredible accuracy, precision and style, on any of the Earth s surfaces, deep below its oceans, high in the sky or, when the need arises, on the Moon. 5 Constellation 27mm Co-Axial calibre Ct red gold with diamonds One of the brightest new stars in OMEGA s Constellation family is the Co-Axial 27 mm in 18 Ct red gold. It is not only uncompromisingly elegant but equipped with the brand s proprietary Co-Axial calibre 8521, from OMEGA s family of mechanical movements widely considered to be among the world s finest. The luxurious timepiece s brushed case with polished claws is crafted from 18 Ct red gold. The matching bracelet has brushed links and polished bars set with 144 full-cut diamonds totalling 0.54 carat. The bezel is paved with 32 full-cut diamonds with a total weight of 0.50 carat. The screw-in caseback features a sapphire crystal that reveals the perfection of the Co-Axial movement inside. The mother-of-pearl dial is completed with, appropriately, a constellation of applied 18 Ct red gold stars, some that are raised and others with a recessed profile. There is a trapezoidal date window at 3 o clock. The polished and facetted 18 Ct gold hour and minute hands are coated with white Super- LumiNova, making them easy to read even in limited lighting conditions. The Co-Axial movement at the heart of the Constellation is equipped with OMEGA s Si 14 silicon balance spring. The dimensions of the movement have allowed OMEGA to introduce its proprietary Co- Axial technology in a 27 mm wristwatch for the first time. The combination of the Co-Axial calibre 8521 and the silicon balance spring offers so much stability that OMEGA offers the stunning timepiece with a four-year warranty. The OMEGA Constellation Co-Axial 27 mm is water resistant to 10 bar / 100 metres /330 feet. An 18 Ct yellow gold model is also available. 8 Constellation 38 mm Day-Date The watches in the OMEGA Constellation line are among the world s most popular and instantly recognizable timepieces. With the iconic claws that were added to the line in 1982, they have developed a devoted following worldwide. Thirty years after the claws, or griffes, made their debut, the new Constellation 38 mm Day-Date introduces a brand-new movement, the OMEGA Co- Axial calibre 8602/8612. Part of OMEGA s family of proprietary Co-Axial movements, it is the first to feature day and date indication with instantaneous jump. Its superb timekeeping performance and stability are enhanced by the Si14 silicon balance spring. The Constellation 38 mm Day-Date is delivered with a four-year warranty. The 38 mm brushed case with polished claws is available in a range of metal options including 18 Ct red or yellow gold, in bicolour versions blending 18 Ct red or yellow gold and stainless steel. The brushed bezel has dazzling Roman numerals that are set with 116 full-cut diamonds with a combined weight of 0.13 carat. The screw-in caseback has a sapphire crystal that makes it possible to see the new movement in action. The watches have bracelets that correspond to their case metals. The new OMEGA Constellation 38 mm Day-Date is water resistant to 10 bar / 100 metres / 330 feet. 11 Seamaster Aqua Terra GMT With the Seamaster Aqua Terra GMT, OMEGA introduces a new member of its exclusive Co-Axial family of movements. The Co-Axial calibre 8605/8615 is the first of OMEGA s proprietary movements to be equipped with a GMT complication, meaning that along with the central hour, minute and seconds hands, there is a GMT hand which completes one rotation every 24 hours, making it possible to keep track of the time in two time zones. The 43 mm case is available in a choice of metals: 18 Ct red gold or stainless steel or, in a bicolor version in 18 Ct red gold and stainless steel. The sapphire crystal on the screw-in caseback allows a clear view of the extraordinary Co-Axial movement inside. The watch is available with either a bracelet in the same metal as the watch case or with a black, brown or blue leather strap. The dial is distinguished by the teak pattern associated with the Aqua Terra collection. The vertical lines are reminiscent of the wooden decks on luxury boats. The applied 18 Ct gold brushed and polished indexes are coated with white Super-LumiNova and the facetted hands are crafted from 18 Ct white or red gold. Like the indexes, they are coated with white Super-LumiNova which allows ease of reading in all light conditions. 12 Seamaster Aqua Terra GMT At the heart of the Seamaster Aqua Terra GMT is the Co-Axial calibre 8605/8615. It is part of the family of movements OMEGA introduced in 2007 built around the first practical new watch escapement to be developed in some 250 years. The Co- Axial escapement in the OMEGA calibres is used in conjunction with a free sprung-balance and its function differs considerably from that of a conventional lever escapement with index. The watch s rate can be adjusted by modifying the moment of inertia of the balance by means of two gold regulating micro screws embedded in the circular balance. This design avoids the disturbing effects of contact between the balance-spring and the index pins and therefore ensures that the stability of rate offered by the Co-Axial escapement is maintained over long periods of use. The result is reduced friction which means that there is almost no need for lubrication; the Co-Axial calibres have long service intervals and the Seamaster Aqua Terra GMT, which is also equipped with a silicon balance spring, is delivered with a four-year warranty. The Co-Axial calibre 8605/8615 is the first in the family to be equipped with a GMT complication. Its GMT hand has a diamond-polished red arrow, making it easy to track time in a second time zone or GMT display. Intriguingly, the GMT hand can also be used for compass orientation: when the watch is held parallel to the ground with its hour hand pointed in the direction of the sun, the GMT hand, when it is adjusted to the same time on the 24-hour GMT display, will indicate north in the northern hemisphere. 22 // OMEGA // BASELWORLD 2012 SEAMASTER // 23

14 Seamaster PLANET OCEAN CERAGOLD A world premiere: the ceragold OMEGA s upgrade of the Planet Ocean collection was one of the industry s most talked about and warmly welcomed product releases in This year, OMEGA is extending the collection with its stunning new Seamaster Planet Ocean Ceragold watches. They are distinguished by a ceramic bezel whose diving scale is made of an innovative new product called Ceragold. The incrustation of Ceragold into the zirconium-based ceramic bezel is a world premiere. Like all of the watches in the Planet Ocean collection, the Ceragold models have professional dive features including a unidirectional rotating bezel and a helium escape valve. The 18 Ct red gold applied indexes are coated with white Super-LumiNova emitting a blue light as are the polished, facetted 18 Ct red gold hands. The exception is the minute hand which emits a green light, as does the dot on the diving bezel. This feature makes it easy for divers to keep track of the elapsed dive time at a glance. The watches in the Planet Ocean collection are water resistant to 60 bar/ 600 metres / 2000 feet. The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Chronograph Ceragold has a generous mm 18 Ct red gold case. Its most striking design element is its polished black zirconium-based ceramic bezel ring which offers a stark, dramatic contrast to the Ceragold diving scale. No less impressive is the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 9301 at the heart of the Seamaster Planet Ocean Chronograph Ceragold. Launched last year, it was the first chronograph in the brand s proprietary family of Co-Axial movements. The movement has a special luxury finish including an 18 Ct red gold rotor and balance bridge; the screws, barrels and balance wheel are blackened. With the OMEGA Co- Axial calibre 9301 it is possible to adjust the hour hand without affecting the performance of the minute or seconds hands, allowing for easy adjustments for travellers changing time zones. The movement is equipped with a silicon balance spring and like all Planet Oceans, the watch comes with a full fouryear warranty. The lacquered black dial presents both the 60-minute and 12-hour counters on the same sub-dial at 3 o clock so reading the elapsed chronograph time is particularly intuitive. The small seconds sub-dial is at 9 o clock. 15 Seamaster PLANET OCEAN CERAGOLD The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Ceragold 42 mm White Planet St. Moritz combines a 18 Ct red gold case and a white ceramic bezel with a Ceragold diving scale. It is dedicated to the Swiss mountain resort town of St. Moritz where each winter, OMEGA times some of the world s most prestigious bobsleigh races. The brushed screw-in caseback is engraved with Si14 (a reference to its silicon balance spring), Ceragold, White Planet and St. Moritz. The caseback also has a sapphire crystal that allows a clear view of one of the world s finest mechanical watch movements. The Planet Ocean White Planet St. Moritz is fitted with the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8501 with an 18 Ct red gold rotor and balance bridge. 19 Speedmaster First Omega in Space Numbered Edition chronograph So much has been written about the rigorous testing that led to the OMEGA Speedmaster s being the only watch qualified for every manned NASA mission that it is easy to forget that the very first OMEGA worn in Space was the Speedmaster that astronaut Wally Schirra wore during his Mercury Atlas 8 mission in October of To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Speedmaster to orbit the earth, OMEGA has created the Speedmaster First OMEGA in Space in honour of Wally Schirra and his historic wristwatch. The OMEGA Speedmaster First OMEGA in Space edition recalls the watch that Schirra bought at a jeweller in Houston more than half a century ago. Inside its mm polished, brushed stainless steel case is the legendary manual-winding calibre 1861, which earned its reputation as the movement in the legendary OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch. 20 Speedmaster First Omega in Space Numbered Edition chronograph Visible through its box-form, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is the classic varnished black dial that for 55 years has made the Speedmaster the world s definitive chronograph: the 30-minute and 12-hour counters are located at 3 o clock and 6 o clock respectively and the small seconds sub-dial is at 9 o clock. It has white transferred indexes; the hour markers and hour and minute hands are coated with Super-LumiNova. The OMEGA Speedmaster First OMEGA in Space chronograph is presented on a brown leather strap with beige stitching. The watch is water resistant to 5 bar / 50 metres/ 167 feet. This classic Speedmaster is a fitting way to celebrate the beginning of an adventure that would ultimately lead to six lunar landings and half a century of space exploration. The watch has a screw-in stainless steel caseback which is embossed with OMEGA s original seahorse emblem, the words THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE and OCTOBER 3, 1962, the date of the Mercury Atlas 8 mission. 22 SPEEDMASTER SPACEMASTER Z-33 The return of the Pilot s Watch: the unmistakable Spacemaster Z-33 OMEGA is proud to introduce the Spacemaster Z-33. Inspired by the iconic Pilot Line case shape and equipped with a brand new multifunction quartz movement, calibre 5666 has been designed with modern pilots in mind and artfully combines its ancestor s legendary design with OMEGA s industry-defining innovation. The Spacemaster Z-33 s case shape cannot be mistaken for that of any other timepiece and in the tradition of OMEGA s great pilots watches, it separates its day-to-day timekeeping from its professional functions ergonomically, using state-of-the-art technology. Designed for pilots Floating above the digital dial is a set of analogue timekeeping hands that are adjusted by the crown at 3 o clock. Surrounding the watch are four pushers that, along with the crown, allow full control over the array of digital features. For keeping track of the time these include date, UTC and two time zones (in 12 or 24 hour display), an alarm and a perpetual calendar. Elapsed time is measured with a chronograph function and a countdown timer. Alongside these features are self-programmable professional pilot functions to log up to ten flights and visualise those logs with date-hour indications. High-technology case, dial and hands Continuing the high technology feel of the watch, the modern-sized case is manufactured from grade 5 titanium, and features brushed, polished and sandblasted highlights, reminiscent of OMEGA s pilot case design. The caseback features the polished OMEGA Seahorse, the Ω symbol, the word Speedmaster and the watch s serial number. The back is fixed in place with four screws and its double wall construction acts as a resonance chamber, thus amplifying the sound of the alarm. The Spacemaster Z-33 is fitted with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides to provide a clear view of the display regardless of the conditions. The watch is water resistant to 3 bar / 30 metres / 100 feet. The Spacemaster Z-33 has a non-reflective matt black dial with white OMEGA name and logo and featuring the words Spacemaster and Z- 33 in white. The white indexes are coated with white Super-LumiNova, as are the skeletonised hour and minute hands. The elements coated with Super-LumiNova emit a green glow in low light conditions. The dial features two large display panels for the digital functions. 23 SPEEDMASTER SPACEMASTER Z-33 The new design incorporates skeletonised hands to help the wearer view the digital displays below them. By simply depressing the pusher at the 8 o clock position, the hands are disengaged to either 3 o clock or 9 o clock, allowing the wearer an unobstructed view of the digital information. On your wrist in the cockpit The Spacemaster Z-33 is supplied with a black rubber strap with the inscriptions OMEGA and Speedmaster in red. It is also available on a brown Soft Touch leather strap. The black rubber strap features a model-specific Titanium folding clasp (grade 5 for all the visible parts and grade 2 for the moving parts). The brown Soft Touch leather strap is secured to the wrist by a standard grade 5 titanium folding clasp (again with grade 2 titanium used for the moving parts of the clasp). Both clasps bear the OMEGA logo. The luminosity of the digital displays is automatically regulated by their transreflective technology, which takes into account ambient light, allowing the digital data to be read as easily on night flights as in direct sunlight. This technology also helps conserve battery power. In dark conditions the Super-LumiNova provides a green glow for the analogue time measurement hands allowing them to be distinct enough not to interfere with the digital information. A very special and highly useful additional detail that underlines the Spacemaster s professional heritage & distinction is the fact that its digital display can be read under all conditions, even for wearers with polarized glasses. 25 SPEEDMASTER RACING When the OMEGA Speedmaster was introduced in 1957, it was valued by motorsport and rally drivers for its chronograph performance and for its design aesthetics. In fact, its dial design was inspired by the dashboards of Italian cars of the time; it was also the first chronograph whose tachymetric scale was repositioned from the dial to the bezel. The very first print advertisement for the OMEGA Speedmaster included copy that said, Our picture shows two sports car enthusiasts racing the clock... the clock being no clock at all but the new OMEGA high-precision wrist computer, the Speedmaster. The new Speedmaster Racing honours the chronograph s decades-long connection to motor racing before the Speedmaster was worn on the Moon or at the North and South Poles, it was found on the wrists of men and women driving high-performance automobiles. The OMEGA Speedmaster Racing chronograph has a 40 mm stainless steel case with a matt black aluminium tachymetric ring on its bezel. It is offered in a choice of grey, grey/yellow or grey red tachymetric scaling. The screw-in caseback features the familiar Seahorse emblem. The dial and sub-dials are available in the range of colour combinations described in the watch s technical specifications. The 30-minute and 12-hour counters and the small seconds hand sub-dial are textured with a triangular Clous de Paris pattern. There is a date window at the 6 o clock position. The hour and minute hands as well as the hour markers are coated with Super-LumiNova. 29 De Ville Chronograph Omega Co-Axial Calibre 9300/9301 OMEGA s De Ville line has long been known not only for its elegant styling but for its introduction of some of the brand s most important watchmaking innovations. For example, it was in a De Ville in 1999 that OMEGA launched its calibre 2500 equipped with a Co-Axial escapement the component that since it was released has revolutionized mechanical watchmaking. In 2007, the De Ville Hour Vision introduced OME- GA s Co-Axial calibre 8500/8501, the movement that demonstrated that OMEGA s Co-Axial philosophy had truly come of age. And it was in the De Ville Hour Vision Annual Calendar that the Si14 silicon balance spring made its début, offering an unparalleled level of stability and performance in a series-produced mechanical watch movement.
