The buzz of the annual Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in January has barely died down before we welcome an abundance of stunning new timepieces from the finest Swiss brands at Baselworld, the largest watch and jewellery fair on the planet, in March. Once again, we reported live from the event this year both across our social-media channels and via our regular Calibre newsletters, interviewing a host of renowned CEOs and admiring many of the new models up close and in person we hope they get your vote, too. 4 THE BIG INTERVIEW ZENITH Q&A GUIDING STAR Zenith CEO Julien Tornare speaks to Craig Bolton, Mappin & Webb and Goldsmiths brand director, about the house s future HOW DID BASELWORLD 2018 GO FOR ZENITH? WAS IT AN ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE FOR THE HOUSE? It was busy, as you can imagine! This year has been a big challenge [Julien took over as CEO in May 2017] and we still have a long way to go, but it was fantastic and I m excited about all the things we re aiming to do. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Zenith has expanded last year s Defy El Primero 21 collection with two watches, including the Defy Classic (from top, 5,500 and 4,900) movement which is still the world s fastest series-made chronograph and updated it for the 21st century, connecting our past and future. This year, we re expanding on last year s Defy El Primero 21 range. The new Defy Zero G sees us recapture the high-complication segment with our first zero-gravity watch. And then there s the Defy Classic, a thin, elegant, contemporary timepiece at a more affordable price level. So we now have a full collection of Defy watches, which will be our focus in AND WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS TO HELP UK CONSUMERS UNDERSTAND AND BETTER APPRECIATE ZENITH S OFFER? Well, all our watches have a movement created in-house - and not many horology brands can claim that. And our prices are also real prices there s a connection between the product and the price, but recently, with the boom in the Chinese market, many brands went so high in terms of their pricing that they lost ground with the local clientele. This has never been the case with Zenith, and it s important for us to continue in this direction. IT S BEEN ALMOST A YEAR SINCE YOU BECAME CEO. WHAT ELEMENTS OF YOUR EXPERIENCE DO YOU BRING TO THE BUSINESS? I have a marketing background, having spent five years in that field in the US and six-anda-half years in Asia. That really helps. AND HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR ASPIRATIONS FOR ZENITH, GOING FORWARD? When I first took over the role, I started by asking people from those at headquarters to members of the press what they thought of Zenith. The answer was always the same: It s a sleeping beauty - great, but a bit boring. So we need to work on that. On the other hand, everyone likes Zenith and wants us to be successful, so my idea is to build on our rich history and traditions going into the future. MANY BRANDS ARE REVISITING THEIR HERITAGE. ZENITH S DEFY EL PRIMERO 21 ENCAPSULATES THAT TREND PERFECTLY. SO WHAT ARE THE KEY TRENDS WE CAN EXPECT FROM YOU THIS YEAR? Well, last year s Defy El Primero 21 is a perfect illustration of my aim of building on our past. 5 NEWS FROM THE INDUSTRY PATEK PHILIPPE Grand designs For the first time, Patek Philippe has enhanced one of its most famous models, the handsome Nautilus, with a perpetual-calendar complication This year, Nautilus, Patek Philippe s traditionally sporty collection, has been graced with its first grand complication. The new Ref 5740 combines the rugged appeal of designer Gérald Genta s iconic creation with a perpetual calendar a complication that automatically adjusts to the number of days in each month, taking into account leap years. The 40mm timepiece is cast entirely in 18-carat white gold, yet measures a mere 8.42mm thick, making it the thinnest watch in the collection to house calibre 240Q. This automatic movement, which is visible through the sapphire-crystal case back, powers a perpetual calendar; day, date, month and leap-year indications; a 24-hour cycle; and a moon-phase display at 6 o clock. The four correctors were designed exclusively for the Nautilus case to preserve its signature silhouette, allowing the wearer to adjust the day, date, month and year, and moon-phase respectively. Thanks to its rounded octagonal bezel, distinctive porthole case and horizontally embossed dial, the Nautilus has been one of the most recognisable sports watches on the market since its launch in Fans of the 40th-anniversary models that were launched in 2016 will recognise the new Nautilus model s glorious blue sunburst dial, which features applied gold hour markers with a luminescent coating. Finally, its polished and satin-finished white-gold bracelet is equipped with the fail-safe Nautilus fold-over clasp, which is secured with four independent catches for a super-secure fit on the wrist ( 91,150). OMEGA A NEW WAVE A quarter-century after launch, the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M gets 14 new iterations To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M, the brand has designed a collection of 14 timepieces six in stainless steel and eight in a mix of stainless steel and gold. Each watch houses the brand s latest Master Chronometer calibre These movements have been offering the highest certified standard of performance, precision and magnetic resistance in the watch industry since At 42mm, the new Seamaster Diver 300M models have grown in size, and feature laser-ablated, polished ceramic dials in blue, black or PVD chrome, decorated with the wave pattern that was so popular in the original design. The ceramic bezel has a diving scale cast in Ceragold or white enamel (for longer-lasting whiteness and durability). Other design changes include raised indices filled with Super-LumiNova, subtly reshaped skeleton hands and a date display that now sits at 6 o clock. The patented helium escape valve also has a new conical shape, meaning it can be unscrewed underwater a useful trick while diving ( 3,600). ROLEX Master stroke Rolex has unveiled a trio of new 40mm models in its popular GMT-Master II collection: an Oyster-steel version with Rolex s signature Pepsi bezel in red and blue ceramic, an 18-carat Everose gold number and an Everose Rolesor model that combines Oyster steel and 18-carat Everose gold (left, 10,350). Both the Everose gold and the Everose Rolesor models feature a bezel fitted with two-colour Cerachrom inserts in a black and newly developed brown ceramic. The black lacquer dial contrasts with highly legible Chromalight appliqués and hands cast in 18-carat pink gold. Under the hood ticks Rolex s Superlative Chronometer-certified 3285 movement, which has generated 10 patent applications over the course of its development. CALIBRE 05

6 WATCH PARTNERSHIPS TEAM PLAYERS SPORTING COLLABORATIONS The worlds of sport and timekeeping have always gone hand in hand, which is why many luxury watch brands sponsor teams and events. This year, TAG Heuer and Hublot have their sights set on greatness with their latest launches, celebrating Formula 1 racing and football respectively HUBLOT LAUNCHES ITS FIRST CONNECTED WATCH TAG HEUER AND ASTON MARTIN DESIGN A WATCH READY FOR THE RACETRACK At the International Geneva Motor Show last month, TAG Heuer s CEO, Jean-Claude Biver, announced that the brand is now the Official Partner, Official Watch Partner and Official Connected Watch Partner of Aston Martin and Aston Martin Racing marking its triumphant return to the World Endurance Championship. To celebrate, the Swiss watch brand has worked closely with the team at Aston Martin to develop two special-edition timepieces directly inspired by the shape, colours and design of Aston Martin s racing cars. The 45mm TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 01 Aston Martin takes its cues from the new Aston Martin Vantage, while the 43mm TAG Heuer Formula 1 Aston Martin houses a quartz-chronograph movement that s accurate to a tenth of a second, showcasing the house s motor-racing heritage. The latter features a notched steel bezel and an aluminium ring with a tachymeter scale, and its distinctive lime-green accents borrow their hue from Aston Martin s racing livery (above, 1,350). This year, Hublot is the Official Watch and Official Timekeeper of the FIFA World Cup, which kicks off in Russia on 14 June. In honour of this, the Swiss horology brand unveiled its first-ever smartwatch at Baselworld, meeting FIFA s need for a customised timepiece that can connect referees on the pitch to goal-line technology and allow them to determine if the ball has crossed the line. The Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia shares its base DNA with Hublot s flagship model, thanks to a bezel decorated with six H-shaped screws and its Kevlar insert. Hublot has worked with Google and Intel to give this 49mm titanium smartwatch a wealth of functions so wearers can keep up to date with games in real time. It will announce each match 15 minutes before kick-off and signal yellow and red cards, player changes and goals. It s compatible with mobile phones using Android 4.4 or ios9 and above. The watch is offered with 32 dial options one for each country taking part in the World Cup and is available in digital and analogue versions. Thanks to Hublot s One Click system, it s easy to change between the two provided straps (one in lined black rubber, the other featuring the World Cup emblem), or switch to one of the colourful team-inspired choices available. Limited to 2,018 pieces, it will be available from 1 May. Pre-order at Watches of Switzerland, Mappin & Webb and Goldsmiths ( 4,300). 7 OUR EXPERTS CHOICES IT S A WATCH WITH A STRONG VISUAL IDENTITY FAYE SOTERI Senior Watch Buyer, Rolex & Specialist Brands IT BLENDS VINTAGE STYLE WITH EXCELLENT LEGIBILITY MARK TOULSON Head of Watch Buying Among the countless new releases at Baselworld, Patek Philippe s Ref 5270P (below, 143,230) was an exceptional piece, in my view. This 41mm chronograph perpetual calendar in platinum blends vintage style with excellent legibility, making for a really classic, eye-catching timepiece. Powered by Patek Philippe s first manufacture-made chronograph movement with a perpetual calendar, first launched in 2011, it boasts six patent innovations. I loved the combination of its golden opaline dial with blackened-gold applied numerals, a platinum case and a shiny chocolatebrown alligator strap. Another memorable piece was the Black Bay Fifty-Eight from Tudor ( 2,560). With a diameter of just 39mm, it s compact and would be especially comfortable on slimmer wrists. Its black, domed dial with angular hands was inspired by the diver s watches Tudor made in the 1950s. This piece received the COSC certification, awarded to only the most precise of watches. It s a stunning new model that combines Tudor s signature aesthetics with contemporary watchmaking expertise. FIRM FAVOURITES The cream of the crop Our trio of watch experts share their stellar selections from Baselworld 2018 In my opinion, the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II ( 10,350) from Rolex in Oystersteel and Everose gold simply cannot go unmentioned. With a new-generation calibre, not only is it a reflection of Rolex s pioneering research and engineering, but it s also a showcase for a number of striking features, most notably its two-coloured Pepsi bezel in black and a newly developed brown ceramic. Testament to its high performance, it also carries the Superlative Chronometer certification. The other timepiece I couldn t stop thinking about is the 41mm Zenith Defy Classic (left, 5,500). This automatic wristwatch has an elegant, sporty style and, with its blue-toned sunray-patterned dial, it s firmly on trend. The Swiss watchmaker has gone against the grain with this new release, opting for a case in brushed titanium, which makes it very light and comfortable on the wrist. While it has kept things simple, the result is a watch with a strong visual identity. It s available on a metal bracelet or a strap in either leather or rubber, so can be styled up or down with ease. IT S MADE FOR THRILL-SEEKING AVIATION ENTHUSIASTS LISA BROUN Senior Watch Buyer, Luxury Watches The RAF celebrate its 100th anniversary this year and, to mark this milestone, Breitling has released the Colt Skyracer RAF 100 Limited Edition (below, 1,800) one of my standout pieces from the fair. This robust yet lightweight aviation-inspired 45mm model is created in the brand s high-tech Breitlight material, with the air-force emblem at 9 o clock. Designed with thrill-seeking aviation enthusiasts in mind, it has a clear dial design, with large, luminescent hour markers and hands. I also loved the Omega Seamaster 300M in stainless steel with a black dial ( 3,600). It s one of the 14 pieces in the new collection based on the 1993 model. Each boasts Omega s Master Chronometer certification, making it hard to beat when it comes to performance and precision. Omega has reworked several aspects of the much-loved original, including the reshaped skeleton hands and the date window, which now sits at 6 o clock. At 42mm, it s also larger, and features a helium escape valve with a new conical shape which, if operated under water, will protect the watch s water-resistancy. CALIBRE 07

8 BASELWORLD SPECIAL PRIDE OF PLACE These watches planted their flags on the horological landscape in Switzerland. Now they re set to make their mark further afield WORDS Lisa Paul A flurry of new launches, brand announcements and celebrity sightings despite being two days shorter than previous shows, this year s Baselworld proved it was still a force to be reckoned with. Much like last year, many horology houses opted to evolve existing models rather than launch entirely new timepieces outright. Rolex unveiled a pitch-perfect iteration of its much-loved GMT-Master II with its signature Pepsi red and blue ceramic bezel, while Omega showcased anniversary versions of both its Seamaster and its Seamaster Diver 300M, and Patek Philippe reissued its signature Golden Ellipse, 50 years after its creation. Other brands continued to forge ahead with technological advances. Hublot launched its first smartwatch, the Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, which was designed in partnership with Google and Intel to connect referees to goal-line technology. Meanwhile, Zenith built on the momentum from its ground-breaking Defy El Primero 21 by further expanding its Defy family into a flagship collection including the new Defy Zero G, which literally defies the laws of gravity with its gyroscopic module. Whether delving into the archives or breaking new ground, Baselworld reminded us that the watch industry never rests on its laurels.

9 PATEK PHILIPPE REFERENCE 5205G When it comes to calendar watches, there are few more effortlessly elegant than those by Patek Philippe as exemplified here by the Reference 5205G, the latest model in its existing 5205 line. In classic Patek style, this 40mm annual-calendar timepiece shows the day, date and month in apertures at the top of the dial, rather than in subdials, with the moon-phase and 24-hour indicators in a subdial at 6 o clock. The brand first introduced this model in white gold in 2010, and this year it replaces previous grey-dial iterations with a gorgeous sunburst blue dial that subtly gradates to black around the circumference. This contemporary look is completed with new luminous three-face Dauphine hands, applied white-gold hour markers and a glossy black alligator-leather strap. Price: 36,720 CALIBRE 09

10 OMEGA SPEEDMASTER DARK SIDE OF THE MOON APOLLO 8 Omega has unveiled this Dark Side model, 50 years after Apollo 8 made the first complete orbit of the moon. Like previous Dark Side iterations, this 44.25mm watch is cast in black zirconiumoxide ceramic, this time with contrasting yellow accents. But where it excels is in its blackened calibre 1861 (here called 1869 for the first lunar landing), which has been laser-ablated to mimic the lunar surface. The case back is engraved with the phrase We ll see you on the other side as spoken by Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell before Apollo 8 flew to the dark side. Price: 7,200 BREITLING NAVITIMER 1 AUTOMATIC 38 One of the industry s most iconic pilot s watches, the Breitling Navitimer, has been shrunk this year, making it available for smaller wrists. As its name suggests, the watch has a 38mm stainless-steel case with a redesigned ratcheted bidirectional bezel and the Navitimer s signature circular slide rule. Breitling has based the design on Reference 66, a three-hand Navitimer from the 1950s with a dial free of chronograph counters. Inside ticks Breitling s calibre 17, a COSC-certified movement powering a date window at 6 o clock. This iteration boasts a silver dial, an 18-carat red-gold bezel and brown alligator-leather strap. Price: 4,460 TUDOR BLACK BAY GMT Tudor surprised everyone at Baselworld with its new Black Bay GMT a watch that not only adds a world-time function to the Black Bay line for the first time, but, with its matt burgundy and blue Pepsi bezel, also references Tudor s sister brand, Rolex. The 12 daylight hours are printed on the burgundy section and the night-time hours on the blue, indicated by Tudor s signature red snowflake hand, while the bidirectional rotating bezel is calibrated for 24 hours. The steel 41mm timepiece houses Tudor s newly developed calibre MT5652, which is certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). Price: 2,790

12 BASELWORLD SPECIAL LONGINES LA GRANDE CLASSIQUE Blue dials have moved beyond being merely a passing trend and become a watch-wardrobe staple a fact that hasn t escaped Longines, which has introduced its signature shade into the timeless La Grande Classique de Longines collection. There s a wealth of new models to choose from this year, and in four sizes 24mm, as per the model shown here, plus 29mm, 36mm and 37mm making this a great choice for both male and female wrists. Each iteration has an elegant sunray dial with inlaid stone, inlaid diamond or Roman-numeral hour markers, and the choice of a blue alligator-leather strap or a stainless-steel bracelet. As with previous iterations, the case back houses the lugs for the strap a watchmaking technique patented by Longines. Price: CALIBRE

13 TAG HEUER CARRERA CALIBRE 16 This year, TAG Heuer is championing its motorsport credentials on two fronts as it partners with Aston Martin Racing (see page 6) and celebrates the 55th anniversary of its signature motor-racing watch, the Carrera. The 41mm steel TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 comes with either a blue or a black dial, as shown here. With silver subdials, striking red accents and a tachymeter scale running around the bezel, these vintage-inspired watches have motor racing in their DNA. Under the hood ticks the automatic calibre 16, which powers a date window at 3 o clock. This black-dial version s stealthy good looks are finished with a black ceramic bezel and a black perforated leather strap with contrasting red stitching. Price: 3,500

14 HUBLOT BIG BANG REFEREE 2018 FIFA WORLD CUP RUSSIA Hublot heralds the arrival of its first smartwatch this year, in response to World Cup organiser FIFA s need for a customised watch that could connect referees on the pitch to goal-line technology, and enable them to determine if the ball has crossed the line. The 49mm titanium watch expresses all the hallmarks of the iconic Big Bang, including a bezel decorated with six H-shaped screws and a Kevlar insert. But, working closely with Google and Intel, Hublot has come up with a wealth of useful football functions, including notifications for goals, red or yellow cards and player changes. There are 32 dial options, one for each country taking part in the World Cup this summer, and a choice of digital or analogue mode. It s limited to 2,018 pieces. Price: 4,300

15 BASELWORLD SPECIAL ZENITH DEFY EL PRIMERO 21 Following its success in 2017, Zenith is again homing in on the supercharged Defy El Primero 21 this year. The COSC-certified chronograph is capable of measuring to a hundredth of a second, making it 10 times faster than its predecessor, the iconic 1969 El Primero movement. To achieve this, Zenith has equipped the movement with a dual escapement one for time and one for the chronograph, which run at 36,000 and 360,000vph respectively, and are made from a new patented composite material Zenith is calling carbon-matrix carbon nanotube. Technically, this new 44mm model in brushed titanium is the same as before, but it boasts aesthetic updates: a new panda dial (that is, a solid silver-toned sunray dial with contrasting black counters) and a black rubber strap with alligator-leather coating. Price: 8,900 CALIBRE 15

16 BASELWORLD SPECIAL ROLEX DATEJUST 31 The Datejust 31 gets a makeover this year with new models in 18-carat white, yellow and Everose gold. Rolex has subtly redesigned the sides and lugs on its signature Oyster case for a more comfortable fit, while inside ticks calibre 2236 Rolex s new automatic movement, which is Superlative Chronometer-certified. This means it s precise to the order of 2 /+2 seconds per day after casing more than twice that required of an official chronometer. This model, in glorious 18-carat yellow gold, is no shrinking violet thanks to its green malachite dial, glittering bezel set with 46 brilliant-cut diamonds, yellow-gold hands, and yellow-gold Roman VI and IX hour markers (which also feature no fewer than 24 diamonds). Price: 32, CALIBRE

17 BLANCPAIN FIFTY FATHOMS BATHYSCAPHE DAY DATE 70S On its launch in 1956, the original Bathyscaphe was intended as a sportier everyday alternative to its famous cousin, the Fifty Fathoms diver s watch but it soon became a sought-after piece in its own right. During the 1970s, it gained bold silvered dial markings typical of the era with rectangular indexes, Arabic numerals, and windows for the day of the week and date at 3 o clock. This year s 43mm rendition effortlessly captures the look of that retro model, with a grey dial that gradates from the centre, while 21stcentury advances include a ceramic insert and indexes filled with highly legible Liquidmetal. It comes on four wristbands, including the antiquedleather strap here, and is limited to 500 pieces. Price: 9,290

18 GLASHÜTTE ORIGINAL SENATOR CHRONOGRAPH PANORAMA DATE Four years ago, Glashütte Original unveiled calibre 37 its own automatic integrated chronograph movement housed in the first editions of this watch, which were cast in either platinum or red gold. The German brand launched a stainless-steel version with a black dial and blue Super-LumiNova last year, and now the spotlight falls on this 42mm steel version with a white dial handcrafted in its factory in Pforzheim. The contrasting black hands, indexes and numerals are filled with Super-LumiNova that glows green in the dark, while the brand s signature Panorama Date is seen in twin date discs at 6 o clock. Price: 10,500 BREGUET MARINE CHRONOGRAPHE 5527 Breguet s history of maritime timekeeping stretches back to 1815, when Louis XVIII of France named its founder, Abraham-Louis Breguet, watchmaker to the Royal Navy. Today, this seafaring tradition is evident in La Marine, its luxury sports-watch collection that reinterprets its long lineage of marine chronometers. For the first time, the brand has unveiled a Marine watch in titanium, as seen here, with a sunburst slategrey dial. Inside its 42.3mm case ticks calibre 582QA an automatic movement with a tiller-inspired oscillating weight that s visible through the sapphirecrystal case back. This model has a rubber strap. Price: 16,900 ORIS CARL BRASHEAR CHRONOGRAPH LIMITED EDITION With its motto real watches for real people, Oris certainly draws inspiration from left-field sources. In 2016, it launched a bronze watch that championed Carl Brashear, a hero who overcame racial barriers, as well as injury and amputation, to become the US Navy s first amputee diver and its first African- American Master Diver. This year s follow-up is also cast in bronze, but packs a chronograph function a first for Oris s Divers Sixty-Five line. It has a bicompax dial, and the case back is engraved with Brashear s mantra: It s not a sin to get knocked down, it s a sin to stay down. Just 2,000 pieces have been made. Price: 3,600
