SUBJECT CD Changer Retrofit Kit - P/N MODEL X3 (E83): Select Vehicle Production 09/03 On* * Vehicle must have both optional CD changer pre-wiring (SA 692) and front armrest (SA 493). SUGGESTED INSTALLATION TIME: 1.0 HOURS Total installation time may vary depending on vehicle options and equipment The instructions below are developed for BMW vehicles and are not be compared to any other existing instructions for vehicles other than BMW. No methods other than those specified in this document are to be used for installation in BMW vehicles. Left and right are determined from driver s seat. Carefully read all instructions and supplements before proceeding with the installation. Reference should be made to TIS for instructions dealing with a stock part of the vehicle but not stated in detail in these instructions. The instructions were complete and up to date at time of publication; however, changes to the vehicle or installation may have occurred. Please report any problems or changes noted with the installation to BMW Technical Hotline, along with VIN, date of manufacture and as much detail as possible. 3 CD Changer Preparation 3 1. Remove the three shipping screws from the bottom of the CD changer. Store the three screws for future use; replace three screws only if a unit needs to be returned for an exchange. 2. Cover the holes where the shipping screws were installed with the three adhesive seals supplied with the unit. 3. It may be necessary to change the position of the horizontal/vertical Spring Pin on both sides of the CD changer to the Vertical (V) position. (The unit is shipped with the Spring Pin in the Horizontal position.) 4. Affix the locking squares (2) on the left and right sides of the CD changer chassis to firmly secure the pins (1) in place. 5. Proceed to CD Changer installation on next page.

In rear of console remove two screws (1) and two nuts (2). 5. Remove two forward console-mounting screws (1). 6.

Remove the following components using procedures available through TIS: Center vent (1) Shifter knob (2) Shifter boot/gear selector panel (3) Climate control panel (4) Console trim panel (5) Center cup holder (6) Parking brake handle/boot Rear ashtray assy. (not shown) 3. Remove storage bin (1) and two screws (2). Original storage bin will not be reused. 4. In rear of console remove two screws (1) and two nuts (2). 5. Remove two forward console-mounting screws (1). 6. Disconnect electrical connections between center console (2) and vehicle (i.e. eject box connections). 7. Center console may now be lifted out of position and removed from vehicle, taking care not to damage interior components.

5 8. Remove two forward nuts (1) securing base bracket (2) Remove base bracket from vehicle. 9. Remove two clips (3) from top of base bracket, as they will be reused in a later step.

Locate and expose 3-pin I-BUS/Power connector and audio connectors (3) for CD Changer, which should be wrapped in felt padding secured below rear main bracket (4). 12.

5 5 8. Remove two forward nuts (1) securing base bracket (2) Remove base bracket from vehicle. 9. Remove two clips (3) from top of base bracket, as they will be reused in a later step. Base bracket will not be reused. 10. Remove 2 Torx bolts (1) and relocate ejectbox connector bracket (2). 11. Locate and expose 3-pin I-BUS/Power connector and audio connectors (3) for CD Changer, which should be wrapped in felt padding secured below rear main bracket (4). 12. Insert spacer (1) over mounting studs of rear main bracket (2). This spacer is necessary to prevent warping of center console upon reassembly. 13. Install CD Changer bracket (1) as indicated using two nuts (2) and two Torx bolts (3). Reinstall eject-box connector bracket in place above left rear leg of CD Changer bracket. 14. Route CD Changer connectors (4) up through center of CD Changer bracket.

Navi (6-pin connector (4) is labeled CD-SDARS) See Chart below to select proper audio connector for this vehicle.

6 6 15. The X3 CDC harness will include these four connectors. Power/I-bus connector (1) is used in all cases. Depending on vehicle options select the appropriate audio connector: Audio (2) w/o DSP or Sirius Digital audio (3) DSP w/o Navi Audio (4) Sirius w/o DSP ex. Navi (6-pin connector (4) is labeled CD-SDARS) See Chart below to select proper audio connector for this vehicle. If Vehicle has these options: Sirius Navigation DSP Use this Connector: (4) (2) (4) (3) (3) (4) (2) (2) Note: If CD Changer is being installed on an X3 already equipped with Sirius Satellite Radio substitute 6-pin connector (2) with 6-pin connector (4). 6-pin connector (4) is labeled CD-SDARS. 16. Connect 3-pin and appropriate audio connector into CD Changer. 17. Install CD Changer (1) into bracket as indicated using four M4x8 screws (2) front, and four, rear (3). Sliding door locks in forward position. 18. Insert two clip nuts removed from original base bracket and insert in these locations (4). 19. Return center console to vehicle and secure using original hardware. Be sure to reconnect eject-box connections upon reassembly. 20. Insert storage cup (1) into left interior of center console. Confirm slots on storage cup (2) are properly seated on three mounting tabs inside console (3).

7 21. Insert three locking clips (1) from kit into underside of finisher panel (2) in selected locations. 22. Insert finisher panel (1) over CD Changer and storage cup.

Align all mounting points and lock finisher panel in place. Check for smooth operation of all moving parts. 23. Reinstall all components removed during installation. Installation Complete. Proceed to Retrofit Coding.

8 8 RETROFIT CODING Note: Please refer to SI B for latest Progman retrofit procedure before starting vehicle coding. Retrofit CD Changer using Progman or later Follow approved Progman Retrofit procedures until Retrofit selection appears then: Select: Retrofits Again Select: Retrofits Select: CD Changer Select: Added Informational page displays Retrofitting CD Changer selected. The vehicle order is changed during sequence. Select: CONTINUE Tester will automatically determine measures plan for encoding 672 (CD Changer) and will be added to vehicle order. Select: ACCEPT Select: START to execute measures plan Upon completion of retrofit coding conduct functional test of the CD Changer.
