What an exciting BOPC! Compliments all around, SEGTOA put on a FUN and Profitable BOPC. The Friday Night Meet & Greet was planned for 50 attendees, and we had 50 attendees!! All seemed to enjoy the location and the Comradery. Although we probably would have had more cars with better early weather reports, we still had 129 beautiful cars AND terrific weather. The Lord knew we needed great weather and provided it!! The Church location worked and I believe the other Clubs want to use it in the future. Convenient location, Great food, Great awards, Great T-shirts, Great music, Great fun, what more could you want at a Car Show?? Thanks to everyone who brought your cars, and to all of you who worked the show. I ve received lots of compliments on how well the show went, YOU made the difference. THANKS!!! John Link 2

3 Recap 35th Annual BOPC Show Piedmont Church, Marietta Saturday April 30 Well, we did it. Another successful BOPC meet thanks to the many volunteers from SEGTOA. There were 129 cars in attendance, 72 awards given out, the weather was great, and the venue was most excellent. There were also 14 vendors utilizing 31 spaces, and 5 car corral spaces used. Total approximate attendance was: Buicks 30 Oldsmobiles 33 Pontiacs 48 Cadillacs 24 Vendors 14 Car Corral 5 There were only positive comments about the show, the venue, and how it was run. The rain held off until after everyone was gone and everything was squared away. We also wish to thank Piedmont Church for providing an outstanding site, and we have made a significant donation to them in return for their hospitality. 7 Summit Racing/Atlanta Motorama - April A few of us needed a break from the whirlwind of activities surrounding the preparations for the BOPC and decided to hang out at the Summit Racing/Atlanta Motorama at the Atlanta Motor Speedway 2 weeks before. The weather was perfect, unlike 2015, and the infield was packed with classics, muscle cars, rat rods, basically you name it, it was there. Ed Bellair, Bob Immekus, John Link, Mike Walling, Jim Andrews, Steve Hart, Alan Ziglin, and Steve Mondibrown set up for the weekend, and several took home club awards. All in all it was a welcome respite from the flurry of activity leading up to the BOPC. Some are official, some are tentative. America s Vet Dogs in Lake Lanier is an opportunity to show your support and respect for injured veterans by helping to provide service dogs to them. All proceeds from the show go to this effort. We ll provide details for anyone who wants to convoy from the Atlanta area with the group. Bring your car, bring some money, and bring a buket or big jar. Here s how it works: The winning car will be the one that generates the most bucks. Place a jar in fron of your car. Everyboody votes with their dollars, and every cent goes to America s Vet Dogs. Want to buy a plaque for your car? Stuff the ballot box! Want to be on stage for your plaque? STUFF THAT BALLOT BOX WITH BUCKS! See the flyer on page 7. Pontiacs in Pigeon Forge is another great one. We had 11 people in 7 cars last year. Let s see if we can beat that number. This is a Pontiacs Only show, and there were and estimated 250 there last year. The special rate rooms are sold out at the Music Road Hotel and Inn, but there are still rooms available at the regular rates, and there are other hotels nearby. You can trailer your car or drive it up, and if you drive you won t have to go it alone. There will be several of us making the trip on Friday this year, taking a route with spectacular scenery. Visit the Pontiac s in Pigeon Forge Facebook page or go to to see how to reserve and register. The Tail of the Dragon overnight trip is a popular one that s becoming a regular event. Ask anyone who went last year and they ll tell you what a great time they had! These are your club events! Help make all of them a success! 8

12 Tech Tips: The Snowball/Domino Effect, or Sometimes you just gotta laugh After contemplating a picture of my 67 GTO that hides all the sheetmetal imperfections, I decided that the front end was sitting too high. Since my car has power drum brakes, lowering spindles were not an option unless I converted to disc brakes, completely unnecessary in my mind since the car stops on a dime and leaves 2 (not 5) cents change. First, a little background. I grew up in a car family. My dad was an engineer at Ford who worked on the original Mustang program. My mom was an executive secretary at Ford (so how did I end up with a GTO?!?). My uncle is a car collector. My brother and I were named after cars (ask me some time). My youngest son is an ASE Certified Master Mechanic. I ve rebuilt differentials, swapped clutches and transmissions, and built engines. I think I can handle this. Off to Summit Racing for lowering springs. The upper ball joints had been replaced, but lowers were needed. Since the front end would be apart anyway, let s replace the upper and lower control arm bushings, stabilizer bar bushings, and jounce bumpers. Oh, and we might as well replace the upper control arm shaft mounting bolts too. And new shock absorbers and hardware. I m running out of space for all these parts Okay. First, remove the brake backing plates. The left comes right off, the right won t budge. Alright, disconnect the brake line, take the spindle and backing plate off as a unit. The 48 year old lower ball joint nut turns the stud. Cold chisel the nut off, and gently tap the spindle out of the backing plate with a bolt threaded part way in. Success. The old springs are out now (finagling the coil spring compressor hooks is a story for another day). So let s remove the upper control arms. Dang. The left arm is too close to the header to get the mounting shaft nut off. Drop the steering wheel and remove the the header bolts. Dang. Still no room. Out comes the Sawzall to shorten the bolts. Wrestle the upper control arm off. Bend a c-clamp trying to press the mounting shaft bolts out, resort to the ball joint press with a nut and big honkin washer. Remove the bolts from the lower control arms. Rats. Can t get the left side bolts out without disconnecting the exhaust downpipe from the collector flange on the shorty headers. Okay, upper and lower control arms are off. The uppers are fine, they can be gritblasted and repainted. The lowers need to be replaced. They come with ball joints and bushings. Anybody need lower ball joints and lower control arm bushings (the ones I bought back in paragraph 3)? Then I realize that I need offset upper control arm shafts for proper alignment. They come with bushings. Anyone need a set? On to reassembly. With the left lower control arm off, I have perfect access to the collector flange so I bolt the downpipe back on. Oh. The control arm bolts won t go on with the pipe in place. Sigh. Pipe off, control arm on. Uppers back from the sandblaster, primed painted, beautiful. Ball joints on, bushings and control arm shafts mounted, spindles on, backing plates on, shocks mounted, bolts torqued at curb height, brakes bled. Wheels on, looks great! Wait a minute. The right side sits an inch higher than the left. Remove the spring and cut half a coil off. Okay. Wheels on and front end aligned, both sides even. Now let s do that power steeering gear conversion... Jim Andrews 12
