Meet at Brookfields at 9-9:30am for a Poker Run followed by lunch Bert's Diner on Grant Line Rd. at about 11:30am to 12 Noon **No soup or pie at the Kane's** Please visit our website at clutchchatter.org for pictures, tour plans and much more.

We set up the clubs trailer and lodged for the night in trailer with air matt, and collected money as the vendors that arrived late.

Food concession arrived and lots of good food to be had. We sold 90 plus vendors spots and everybody seemed happy.

2 Clutch Chatter October 2012 Page 2 V-8 Swap Meet The 42nd swap meet went smooth and no problems, the sellers were easy to sign up and Alma and I were ready to take their money. We set up the clubs trailer and lodged for the night in trailer with air matt, and collected money as the vendors that arrived late. Potty soon also arrived, signs were set up Steve Ahab and I. John Sweeny did a live broad cast for Cruise in News. Food concession arrived and lots of good food to be had. We sold 90 plus vendors spots and everybody seemed happy. By 12:30 allot of vendors loaded up and after that Steve and I cleaned up so we could leave also. We would like to thank the members who helped and get at 4am to collect money at the gate. 3 Clutch Chatter October 2012 Page 3 A Reprise of Hot Rod History By Bruce Woodward A gathering of the members and friends of Regional Group #4 EFV-8 Club on September 20, 2012 at the California Automobile Museum marked what has become an annual modified meeting, pizza and salad event. Highlighting this occasion was a presentation by our own member Bruce Woodward who traced the lore of automotive Hot Roding from its origins early in the 20th century with adventurous potential industrialists like Henry Ford building and setting speed records with his 999 race car (incidentally, frightening the financial backers of his neophyte motor car company who told him to knock it off ), through the 1920 s when speed hungry youth, strapped for cash, scrounged Southern California automobile wrecking yards for remnants of four banger Fords and Chevrolets they would meld together to race on nearby dry lake beds. Up until the mid 1930 s modified Model T and Model A Ford engines and running gear components were most popular due to high availability at low prices. Early in the 1930 s however, as the low end of the automotive spectrum ie: Ford, Chevrolet and Plymouth, opted for more than four cylinder power plants Henry Ford gambled on introducing a flathead V-8. The 1932 Model 18 Ford V-8 made its debut with a design mystique that was to exceed its new flathead V-8 engine. By the 1950 s the 32 Ford Roadster had become the classic American Hot Rod. To illustrate his presentation Bruce brought his recently completed beautiful black 32 Ford Roadster equipped with authentic original hot rod components available in the 1950 s. How did Bruce s roadster get to be the beautiful black hot rod it is today? First: At age 10, Bruce began attending meetings of the newly formed Sacramento Regional Group #4 V-8 Club with his Dad. They also went to races at the Calistoga and Capitol Speedway tracks in addition to the midget races at Hughes Stadium. The Ford flathead V-8 was the engine of choice at these races and Bruce looked forward to someday building up a flathead V-8 of his own. Second: Why a 32 Ford Roadster? The mystique mentioned earlier included the unique factory molded frame members, contoured rear fuel tank and vertical grille. Remove the fenders and the car does not look stripped but rather revealed. As the years passed by 32 Roadsters became more desirable and also more rare. After locating this car, Bruce spent12 years befriending and visiting with its owner hoping someday to buy it. The owner eventually promised to sell it to Bruce. Late in his life however, the owner forgot his promise and was selling the car to a stranger when Bruce intervened reminding him of his prior commitment. Third: Among the rare circa 1950 speed components on the car are: a Kinmont front braking system; Scots Supercharger; chrome Columbia rear end and a tachometer that is mechanically driven by a front pulley. The treasure hunt to find these very desirable parts took time and intense negotiations. That is what it takes to build a classic hot rod roadster. This has been a family project as the Woodward brothers all helped to build up this beautiful black roadster.

The Redmond meet week of September 11 to the 14 was Safety Check, Tours, Welcome dance; Concourse, Awards and good old tire kicking.

4 Redmond, Oregon Western National V-8 Meet was very special. What made it so special was that Bob & Lorraine Kane drove their 1947 Mercury Coupe to the meet.
