It was used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Royal Navy (as the Sea Gladiator variant) and was exported to a number of other air forces during the late 1930s. Although reminiscent of older biplanes of the First World War, the Gladiator was something quite different. Powered by the 840-horsepower Bristol Mercury VIIIA 9-cylinder air-cooled radial engine, it had considerable grunt with a top speed of 257 miles per hour, along with being heavily armed (for the time) with four Browning.303 machine guns. Several squadrons of Gloster Gladiators fought with some success in the early days of WWII in France, alongside the RAF s newer Hawker Hurricane. 247 Squadron, equipped with Gloster Gladiator fighters were tasked with the defence of the Royal Navy Dockyards at Devonport and Plymouth during the Battle of Britain until replaced by Hawker Hurricanes. The Gloster Gladiator is probably best remembered for it s stoic defence of Malta when three Gloster Gladiators, nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity, although outgunned and outperformed, held off the might of the axis air force until relieved by the Hawker Hurricanes of 261 Squadron. The Fairey Swordfish, built by Britain s Fairey Aviation Company, was a large bi-plane with a metal frame covered in fabric, constructed with specially folding wings so it would take up less space aboard aircraft carriers. Used by the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm as a torpedo bomber, it saw useful service in WWII. The aircraft was nicknamed Stringbag crews likened it to the string shopping bags used during that time, which expanded to carry objects of all shapes and sizes. The Swordfish joined 821 Naval Air Squadron in 1938 deployed aboard HMS Ark Royal, serving in the South Atlantic, Indian Ocean and then the Mediterranean. In April 1940, they were transferred to support Allied operations in Norway. The Swordfish Mk I served with 821 Squadron twice firstly between January 1939-April 1940 and then with 821X Squadron between December January 1941 (30 aircraft). Ford Cortina MK III - Onyx Green The Cortina was introduced in 1962 and changed the face of British motoring. It was a risk Ford took and one which paid off. In 1963 the Cortina became the market leader, a trend it kept up for the next two decades. Introduced In 1970, the Mk3 couldn t have been more different from its predecessors. Technically it was almost all new, the car had a 3.5" longer wheelbase than the Mk2 giving a larger cabin, but was the same overall length, it Ford Cortina MK III - Onyx Green 76COR3006 1: was 2" wider and 4" lower giving it a bigger look. With styling influences from Detroit, the Cortina had a cokebottle look to them similar to the American Pinto and LTD models. The facelift in 1973 saw the GLX model dropped in place of the very plush 2000E, this was the flagship of the Cortina range. Last year Eddie Stobart bosses took part in helping to raise a whopping 730,000 for the charity. They came up with the idea to donate a year s revenue from the now famous truck Phoebe Grace. Mark Dixon the owner of the truck attended the annual Emeralds & Ivy Ball where he presented a cheque for 151,700.
