1 Natal Diecast Model Collectors Newsletter November Knoll Road Westville 3629 KwaZulu-Natal South Africa Tel: +27 (0) Website: Hi Folks, The theme for our September 2016 meeting was My Favourite Models - and although there was not a large turn-out of members - those members who attended brought a varied selection of models to display. This is a reminder to members that our last meeting for the year in November is the Rod Guérin Annual Diorama Competition - and also a bring-and- share-a-plate of eats evening. NDMC members, together with their wives or partners and families are welcome to attend the evening. The theme for the Diorama competition is The End of the Line - and for our final meeting for let s try and have as many diorama entries as possible, and also have a good turn-out of members. The rules for this competition are on the NDMC website - and are also included at the end of this newsletter. Apparently the judges are going to pay more attention to the rules for the overall diorama size, and that all the entries meet this criteria, so please bear this in mind - and that these factors will also play a large role in affecting the final scoring. Competition between diorama entrants has been very close in the past, with some intense rivalry, and so we wish all entrants good luck. Also at our November meeting, NDMC members can vote for The Enthusiast of the Year - who will be presented with The Geoff Sear Floating Trophy. Members who won these floating trophies last year, are reminded to please return them for the November meeting. Sadly, Richard has informed me that for reasons beyond his control, his Annual Hobbies Fair which was planned for late November / early December 2016 has been cancelled. At the November meeting, there will also be for sale by Closed Auction - part of the late Geoff Sear Dinky collection - and a collection of Matchbox and Corgi models. See a few pics of these Dinky models in this newsletter. In this newsletter, our thanks to Ian Sutherland for the article about his recent interesting and successful travels, trip and tour around the UK. Our thanks to the VCC Committee for keeping our rental the same as for So we are pleased to tell members that the 2017 NDMC subs will remain the same as for this year. It remains then to wish members and their families a Blessed and Merry Christmas, all the best over the Festive Season, and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. 2 Our recent trip and tour around the UK By Ian Sutherland My Wife and I recently returned from a very successful and enjoyable 5-week visit to England and the Isle of Man, and here a brief report on it. We flew SAA from JHB to London Heathrow - have flown with them before and had good flights - better than British Airways! Then we took the Piccadilly Line from there to Russel Square on one of the new tube sets - you can see right along the length of the train. We had two days in London, visiting the Imperial War Museum to see the Battle of the Somme exhibition - excellent, then the following day the Hornby Museum at Ramsgate - a bit disappointing! Then to Salisbury by train for three nights to visit The Great Dorset Steam Fair - the greatest Steam Fair in the World - quite fantastic! Then we returned to London and took a tain to York for a couple of days - we like York! Visited the Minster and the Railway Museum on the first day, and met with a friend at Leeds the next day and returned via Harrowgate. Then we flew to The Isle of Man from Manchester to stay with Lorna's cousin at Port Erin. Spent three days there visiting a very good Transport Museum at the old Jurby airfiled, and a most interesting Motor and Motor Cycle Museum in the same area. I was able to ride on the narrow-gauge steam railway from Douglas to Port Erin after visiting a newish model railway museum in the harbour at Douglas. Then back to Manchester where Lorna flew to Scotland to stay with friends, and I boarded a train to Derby for three days. Many years ago I had been a Graduate Apprentice at the Aero-Engine division of Rolls-Royce Ltd. Visited a couple of Museums there, plus a model railway shop in Sheffield, and spent a couple of hours at the Crich Tramway Museum near Matlock. The following afternoon I met with Theo and Jill Alberda at Stoke-on-Trent railway station and spent a couple of hours with them - I think they would love to return to South Africa! The next day I met the rest of the 'gang' at Tamworth and we drove to an area east of Rugby where we 'collected' our narrow-boat, the Bettie, for a week on the Oxford and Grand Union canals. Fortunately we had very good weather and thoroughly enjoyed our week. After returning the boat we drove to Banbury to attend a Trix Twin Railway Collectors Association function near Gaydon, where I believe the National Motor Museum is situated. I will not go into details of this, which included a very good dinner at an 'Olde Worlde' pub in the countryside. The following day we visited a very special museum in a small village called Pendon - it has what must be the best model of a particular area of Olde Worlde England anywhere in the World - the detail has to be seen to be believed. We then parted from our friends, who returned to Scotland and we boarded yet another train on our way back to Barnes in London where we spent nearly a week with one of my cousins. From there I visited a friend of mine at Crawley, and a visit to the IWM. to view The Holocast exhibition, made contact with old family friends, and spent the best part of two days at Bletchley Park - where the German enigma code was 'broken' during the Second World War - a most comprehensive and interesting exhibition. Then back to good old South Africa. Oh, just to mention, while in Derby I saw at the station, two of the biggest preserved steam locomotives in the U.K. - The Princess Elizabeth AND the Duchess of Sutherland - twice! And both in steam! Overall, a very enjoyable, successful and interesting trip. Roll on the next one! Page 2 of 6

Models used may be of any scale. 2.5 Models used can be metal die-cast or resin. 2.6 Any other props / materials etc. may be used on the diorama to illustrate the theme or title. 3) Three judges to be selected in rotation. 4) We will ask a representative from AutoDealer to take photographs.
