3 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Association of Global Automakers represents the U.S. operations of international motor vehicle manufacturers, original equipment suppliers, and other automotive-related trade associations. Our global perspective leads us to approach issues collaboratively by working with industry leaders, legislators, regulators, and other stakeholders to create public policy that improves vehicle safety, encourages technological innovation, and addresses environmental needs. International auto manufacturers are driving the U.S auto industry by conducting research and development, investing in plants and equipment, and building cars and light trucks in America. Together, international automakers and international nameplate dealers are employing Americans in ever-increasing numbers. Our goal is to foster an open and competitive automotive marketplace that encourages investment, job growth, and development of more vehicles that enhance Americans quality of life. The Association has served as the voice of international automobile manufacturers in the United States since HIGHLIGHTS: l International nameplate dealers are responsible for 57 percent of retail vehicle sales in the U.S. Global Automakers 1050 K Street, NW, Suite 650 Washington, D.C T l Almost half of the cars and light trucks produced in the U.S. roll off assembly lines at plants operated by international automakers, whose annual production has increased 84 percent in the past 15 years. l More than half of all U.S. new vehicle dealerships jobs are created by international nameplate dealers. 2 Established in 1970, the American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA) is the only national trade association whose sole purpose is to represent America s 9,600 international nameplate new automobile dealership franchises. The Association serves as an advocate for the industry before Congress, the White House, and federal agencies. AIADA is the international nameplate dealers first line of defense in Washington, D.C., and its members are part of an active dealer community with a powerful voice. We focus our lobbying efforts on issues impacting America s international nameplate automobile dealers, including: trade and anti-competitive restrictions; regulatory overreach; tax measures; energy and fuel economy policies; and other industry-related issues. American International Automobile Dealers Association 500 Montgomery Street, Suite 800 Alexandria, VA T GO-AIADA l International automakers have invested more than $82 billion into U.S. operations, with manufacturing plants in 14 states and R&D facilities in 17 states. l The economic activity of international automakers and dealers in America generated $29.5 billion in state and local tax receipts and other revenues, and $39.3 billion in federal tax receipts and other revenues for the federal government in As you ll see in this publication, the resurgence of the auto industry in the U.S. is proof of the benefits of an open economy that welcomes investment, competition, and innovation. 3
