4 The Association of Global Automakers represents the U.S. operations of international motor vehicle manufacturers, original equipment suppliers, and other automotive-related trade associations. Our global perspective leads us to approach issues collaboratively by working with industry leaders, legislators, regulators, and other stakeholders to create public policy that improves vehicle safety, encourages technological innovation, and protects our planet. Our goal is to foster an open and competitive automotive marketplace that encourages investment, job growth, and development of more vehicles that enhance Americans quality of life. The Association has served as the voice of international automobile manufacturers in the United States since 96. Established in 970, the American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA) is the only national trade association whose sole purpose is to represent America s 9,600 international nameplate new automobile dealership franchises. The Association serves as an advocate for the industry before Congress, the White House, and federal agencies. AIADA is the international nameplate dealers first line of defense in Washington, D.C., and its members are part of an active dealer community with a powerful voice. We focus our lobbying efforts on issues impacting America s international nameplate automobile dealers, including: trade and anti-competitive restrictions; regulatory overreach; tax measures; energy and fuel economy policies; and other industry-related issues. 5 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY In the span of less than a generation, we ve seen the reinvention of the automobile industry in the United States. Much, if not most, of that has been driven by international auto manufacturers who conduct research and development, invest in plants and equipment, and build cars and light trucks in America. Together, international automakers and international nameplate dealers are employing Americans in everincreasing numbers. CONSIDER: The top five American-made vehicles, in terms of U.S. content, are manufactured by international automakers. International nameplate dealers are responsible for 59 percent of retail vehicle sales in the U.S. Almost half of the cars and light trucks produced in the U.S. roll off assembly lines at plants operated by international automakers, whose annual production has more than doubled in the past 5 years. More than half of all U.S. new vehicle dealerships jobs are created by international nameplate dealers. International automakers have invested more than $75 billion into U.S. operations with manufacturing plants in 4 states and R&D facilities in 6 states. The economic activity of international automakers and dealers in America generated $8 billion in state and local tax receipts and other revenues and $39 billion in federal tax receipts and other revenues for the federal government in 06. As you ll see in this publication, the resurgence of the auto industry in the U.S. is concrete proof of the benefits of an open economy that welcomes investment, competition, and innovation.
