1 Belfort Alter Shield Installation & Assembly Instructions Model # /13/2012 The Belfort Alter Shield is designed to mount to ¾ inch, sched. 40, (1 inch OD) pipe that is mounted vertically in the ground with either a 4 foot hoop diameter (inner shield) with 4 mounting pipes, or 8 foot hoop diameter (outer shield) with 8 mounting pipes each positioned circumferentially about the Precipitation collector. Field tests indicate that the optimum height of the top of the shield (top of each of the wind deflector fins ) above the precipitation gauge inlet should be 4 inches for the inner 4 foot diameter shield and 6 inches for the 8 foot diameter outer shield. Parts List: Inner 4 foot diameter Shield Assembly: 1. 4 each ¼ ring stainless steel hoops (PN 36211) 2. 4 each Al. hoop backing plates (PN36219) 3. 8 each ¾ inch pipe U bolts with washers and nuts each 18 inch long wind deflector Fins (PN36204) each Stainless Steel Springs each ½ stainless steel s-hooks Outer 8 foot diameter Shield Assembly 1. 8 each 1/8 ring stainless steel hoops (PN 36219) 2. 8 each Al. hoop backing plates (PN 36219) each, ¾ inch pipe U bolts with washers and nuts each, 24 inch long wind deflector Fins (PN 36208) each, stainless steel springs each 1 inch stainless steel s-hooks Tools Required: 1. 2 Site Preparation: Step 1: Locate precipitation gauge and establish height of gauge inlet tube above ground level as Belfort Alter shield height must be set relative to inlet tube height and centered about center of gauge (position A in below drawing). Step 2: Locate and mark support pipes locations at 24 and 48 inch radius (B in below drawing) using below diagram: Dimensions are in Inches Vertical View of Installation: B Support Pipes A NOTE: Support pole (pipe) positions of outer shield are not positioned opposite inner shield poles. (Dimensions are in inches.) Step 3: Permanently mount ¾ inch galvanize or stainless schedule 40 pipe (note ¾ inch pipe has a 1 inch outside diameter) vertically plumb and to a height of 6 inches above the precipitation gauge inlet tube height. (Note: Do not use galvanized conduit as it does not have sufficient strength to support shield) See Mounting Pipe Kit information below. 2

4 Mounting Pipe Kit: (Supplied by User or as Optional additional Purchase from Belfort Instrument) Note: Lengths of vertical mounting pipe are based on mounting pipe secured 18 inches below ground to provide 6 inch length of pipe above the precipitation gauge inlet tube. 4 each required for inner shield and 8 each required for outer shield. Flexible Elbow (4 ea inner shield, 8 ea outer shield) McMaster Carr #4936T176 Assembly Procedure: Step 1: Attach Hoop Backing plates to vertical ¾ inch pipes at approximately the height desired above the precipitation gauge inlet and attach one end of the stainless steel hoops as shown below in Figure #1: (Note: to obtain the 4 wind deflector fin height above the precipitation inlet for the inner shield using 18 inch deflectors, set the top of the top of the Backing plate to 1 1/2 Inches above the inlet height, (( we often set a straight edge or 2 by 4 across the gauge inlet to establish this dimension), for the 6 inch height above the precipitation inlet for the outer shield using the 24 inch deflectors set the top of the backing plate to 2 ¼ inches above the inlet height. 4

Attaching hoops to backing plate and backing plate to vertical pipe This can be accomplished most easily by attaching the top u-bolt to the vertical pipe, then attaching each of the hoops with the second u- bolt using 7/16 inch wrench. Step 2: Slide wind deflector fins onto hoop and center over holes in hoop as shown in Figure #2. Note: you may want to attaché springs to deflector shields before this step. Note: 24 inch wind deflector fins attach to outer hoop and 18 inch wind deflector fins attach to inner hoop. 5
