Rather than using a multitude of copper wires between each switch, relay, and component, individual solid-state modules, or nodes use microprocessors to communicate between each other to activate the selected circuit. When using conventional wiring, each and every switch in the system requires an individual copper wire from the switch, to relay, to the device being activated. In some cases, for example when the switch is in the cab and the device is in the rear of the truck, the quantity of wire and connections can be enormous, especially if several additional switches activate the same circuit. Every metre of wire and every connection is a potential problem area where you may get a short circuit or a loose or corroded connection. These are the most common problems encountered in electrical systems. In the multiplexed system the input node is activated by the switch and sends a signal along the simple twisted pair of wires called the network data bus to the master control module. The master control module then interprets the correct logic and continues the signal to the output node, which activates the device. Numerous metres of wiring and potential problem areas can be eliminated with just this simple circuit. Communication Method Messages are sent from node to node over the J1939 CAN (Controller Area Network) data bus and are simple 8-bit signals just like the signals used in your computer at home. The signals transfer throughout the system at a rate of 500, 000 bits per second, which allows plenty of room for all messages to get to and from the respective nodes. Additionally using the communication network, the system can constantly monitor itself, and any of the devices that are attached to it. Through the intelligence of the software, the multiplexed system can be taught to look for certain problems and conditions in the system and act on the information, or indicate the condition to the operator on the System Display. This communication tool will increase the operator s ability to monitor and control activity on the apparatus. Multiplexed Intelligence Multiplexing uses logic statements in place of mechanical circuitry to define its work. When the right conditions are active in the system, the nodes will communicate with each other over the network and power the appropriate device. Traditional relays or logic circuits are no longer required. Nodes are available in solid-state and are in a thermally protected enclosure. Multiple input and output ports on the nodes allow for several switches and devices to be controlled by the same node. Diagnostic Capabilities By far one of the most powerful features of this multiplexed electrical system is the enhanced diagnostic function available to the technician. The system contains an as-configured wiring diagram in the onboard Display Module that keeps the schematic of the apparatus at close hand. Multiple reports are available which can help track all actions and associations in the system. The technician is able to enter the system, via a PC, the Palm OS or even the Display Module, to quickly diagnose the exact problem, often without even picking up a tool. 4

5 ES-Key Power Distribution Module When the network requires activation of a circuit, this module sends power to the appropriate location to drive the device. There may be several of these located through out the apparatus depending on where the devices are located. Smart Programmable Switch Panels A rubber moulded programmable switch panel that connects directly to the CAN bus. The panel is backlit and can be mounted inside or outside of the vehicle. Each button is programmable from a list of over 23 function types. IrDA compliant wireless programming from a pocket PC, Integral load management functionality, 2, 4 & 8 switch panels available. Information Display Module This module is the onboard information and diagnostic centre for the network system. It contains many pages of text regarding the configuration of the system and complete information on the wiring diagram of the apparatus. Diagnostics can be performed quickly and easily using many of the functions of the Display Module. Warning messages or information text may also be programmed to appear on the display screen. Supernode The Supernode consolidates the functions of several ES-Key modules - USM, Data Logger, Digital Input/Output Module & Power Distribution Module - to reduce node count and simplify addressing which makes it well suited for applications where a centralised node location is required. Universal System Manager The Universal System Manager, or master control module, is the brain of the system. The OEM loads the software, which contains all the logic statements, into this module. This module is also responsible for all load management functions including shedding and sequencing. Input (Switch) Module The ports on this node allow for connection of switches into the network. Depending on location and quantity of switches, there may be several of these modules on the apparatus, for instance, in the cab or at the operator s station. Modem The modem allows for diagnostics and configuration of the apparatus from a remote service centre or by the OEM using a standard telephone dial up connection. Proportional Valve Driver Proportional Valve Driver Module (PVDM) allows for smooth control of connected proportional hydraulic valves, motors or other electrical actuators over a Controller Area Network (CAN). The PVDM functions may be activated by various devices including the Class 1 Ramp Rate Control Module (RRCM) or third party controllers existing within the Class 1 ES-Key network based upon a predefined SAE J1939 Proprietary-A message format Data Logger Much like the Black Box of the system. It keeps track of events in the network, such as circuit activation, faults and other functions. This module is an integral part of the diagnostic function of the multiplexed network. SPS Rocker Panel The ES-Key Smart Programmable Switch Rocker Panel is a multiplexed switch module that allows the use of standard Carling Technologies V-Series Contura sealed switches. Each switch can be programmed with the ES-Key Professional software to suit a multitude of applications. 5

Up to 16 of each module, with the exception of a few, can be integrated into the network making it possible to have an extremely versatile system within a single vehicle. All ES-Key modules have an operating temperature range of -40 C to +85 C as well as being shock and vibration tested in accordance with the SAE J1455 specification. The system has an operating voltage of +10V to +32V and is over, under and transient voltage protected. All components have a minimum IP65 rating and are tested for EMC to the SAE J1113 standard. 8 Vehicle Data Recorder J1939 COMPLIANT Utilises SAE J1939 CAN standard to record NFPA required data 100 HOURS Retains last 100 hours of stored data in memory The Vehicle Data Recorder (VDR) monitors and records engine RPM, throttle percentage, vehicle speed, ABS events, transmission range information, parking brake position, master warning position, and seatbelt status via J1939 CAN messages, in accordance with NFPA requirements. 9 Warning System Seat Belt Warning System The Seatbelt Warning System consists of an input module and display to indicate whether a seat is occupied and if the seatbelt is engaged. A choice of either a large comprehensive display, or if space is a concern, a small rocker sized display is available. The larger display provides individual seat and seatbelt data for up to 20 seats simultaneously. The smaller display shows how many occupied seats don t yet have their seat belts engaged. 10 Information Centre Engine Information Centre Engine RPM display System voltage display & alarm Class 1 ENFO III & IV systems provide the pump operator with engine RPM, oil pressure, engine temperature and electrical system voltage at a glance. The ENFO III utilises the SAE J1587 BUS for engine information. The ENFO IV utilises the SAE J1939 data bus for engine information on engines that support the J1939 protocol. Both units contain all the required engine audible and visual alarms including the low voltage alarm. (The voltage displayed is from the battery.)
