READ THIS MANUAL CAREFULLY BEFORE USING YOUR MIST-PAK MODEL MP30 UNIT. RETAIN THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. SAFETY RULES Follow all electrical and safety codes as well as the National Electrical Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). All electrical connections and wiring should be performed by qualified personnel only. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards require specific duct design and dust collector configuration when collecting potentially reactive metal dusts, such as aluminum and magnesium, and other materials. NFPA also covers other dusts such as grain, plastics, etc. A guideline for determining the precautions to be taken can be found in NFPA 497. Other NFPA standards may apply to your specific application. Consult current NFPA standards, available from NFPA, 1 Batterymarch Park, Quincy, MA, 02269, , for applicable safeguards which may be required for the Installation, Operation, and Service of this product. Fire suppression equipment provided by others. Additional references are the Uniform Building Code and Uniform Mechanical Code. WARNING 1. Avoid mixing combustible materials such as (but not limited to) buffing lint, paper/wood dust, aluminum and magnesium with dust generated from the grinding of ferrous metals. This creates a potential for fire due to the mixing of sparks and combustible materials. 2. Under no conditions should the machine operator be allowed to put lit cigarettes or any burning object into this or any dust/mist control system. 3. Installation of this unit in applications where the chance for heated and/or flammable materials to enter the unit should be evaluated to determine if a fire protection/extinguishing system should be installed. Such a system may be required by Federal, State, or Local codes, or as required by organizations as NFPA and Factory Mutual Insurance or your insurance carrier. Airflow Systems can offer basic guidelines for such an installation, however final installation design is the responsibility of the filtration unit Owner/User. 4. Always disconnect the unit from the power source before servicing. 4

AIRFLOW SYSTEMS, INC. SETS THE STANDARD The MIST-PAK model MP30 mist collector is designed for direct source capture of pollutants using the exclusive MistPlus filter system. The unit collects, smoke, oil mist, oil smoke, and other atmospheric pollutants in industrial plants, shops, schools, and factories with high efficiency, multistage filtration. It is a complete packaged air cleaner that can be installed easily and used as a source capture mist collector to clean ambient pollutants, including smoke and haze. No tools are required to access or service the filters. Mist and smoke laden air enters the 14 diameter intake (location is customer s choice side or back; 12 diameter maximum on front). First stage filtration is a 2 aluminum mesh filter (Optional: 2 polyester pad) that removes large droplets and particles. This filter can be easily removed for periodic cleaning. The primary, second stage MistPlus filter is a 1.50 thick, proprietary media bed rated at 90% efficiency-plus per University of North Carolina Oil Mist Test Method, the only definitive oil test methodology currently in use. This filter is secured using the exclusive Ultra-Seal compressive filter sealing mechanism. An optional external third stage filter can be a 95% D.O.P., a 99.97% HEPA, or an Adsorption Module (AD) that holds sorbent material (charcoal or other). Additionally, the third stage uses the Ultra-Seal filter sealing mechanism eliminating any air by-pass to maintain high filtration efficiency. When collecting sub-micron and micron particulate, filter life can range up to 6 months or more depending on the application, quantity, and type of solids being collected. After passing through the main filters and blower, the air then exits through the built-in silencer, and out through the grilles located on the top of the unit. The MIST-PAK model MP30 mist collector includes L-brackets for unit mounting or hanging. Optional 24 legs are available. Figure 1. 5

WATER OR OIL MIST DRAIN APPLICATIONS The MIST-PAK model MP30 comes equipped with a drain on the bottom of the unit; therefore, tubing must be installed on the drain to allow liquids to drain while preventing air from being drawn back into the unit. Because of the negative pressure inside the air cleaner, a liquid seal is required for the drain tubing. The best method of achieving the seal is to run the drain tubing straight down into a bucket or sump, see Figure 5. The end of the drain tubing should be immersed into the liquid to complete the seal. The next best method to seal the drain pipe is in the form of a P-trap, see Figure 6. The P-trap traps the liquid, forming the air seal. Before start-up, the P-trap should be manually filled by pouring oil or water into the drain until the liquid begins to run out the opening of the drain tubing. Drain fittings supplied on the MIST-PAK model MP30 units are 1-1/2" female pipe thread. Figures 5 and 6 below, illustrate the minimum lengths when using 1-1/2" tubing, while Figure 7 illustrates the drain loop that is provided when the optional 3/4" drain loop kit is ordered (P/N: 2KT ). The kit includes a 1-1/2" MPT x 3/4" FPT reducer bushing and a 3/4" compression nut as shown in Figure 7. Contact your local distributor or the AFS factory for drain questions. Figure 5. Figure 6. Figure 7. 9

ELECTRICAL The MP30 units are all three phase with the wiring terminated inside of a junction box located on the side of the unit unless specially ordered otherwise. Motor starters and disconnects are not supplied with the unit, unless ordered as an option. If these devices are user supplied, they must meet local and National Electrical Code standards and recommendations. Motors are typically of the multiple voltage type (e.g. 115/230 or 208/230/480). Make sure connections in motor junction box correspond to the line voltage you plan to use. Motor starters (manual or magnetic type) must have properly sized thermal overloads for the voltage and current required for the motor. Motor checkout should be performed with the unit running, all filters in place and cabinet door closed. Running the unit with the door open will cause the motor to overload and possible motor failure, voiding warranty. Be sure that the motor current readings are equal to or below motor nameplate rating. These specifications can be found on the motor itself or are provided in the Specifications Section of this manual. WARNING ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE UNIT FROM THE POWER SOURCE BEFORE WORKING ON OR NEAR THE MOTOR OR WIRING ASSEMBLIES. LOCK OUT DISCONNECTS TO PREVENT THE UNEXPECTED APPLICATION OF POWER. THREE PHASE MOTOR The standard three phase, 5 HP motor does not have overload protection included in the standard configuration and must be supplied by the customer. These options are available from the factory. If the protective circuits are not ordered from the factory, use equipment as specified by the National Electric Code or other applicable authority. Figure 8 illustrates a typical 3 phase, 60 Hz wiring diagram. Refer to the motor name plate for the line connections used and wiring configurations for the 230V and 460V. Check the motor plate before changing voltage settings. Figure 8. Typical schematic for fused disconnect, starter with overload protection, and MP30 unit, 60 Hz. 10

BI BLOWER The BI motor/blower assembly requires little or no routine servicing. The motor, blower wheel, and motor compartment gaskets should be checked twice a year under normal usage. To tighten the blower wheel, refer to Figure 9. Adjust the height above the inlet horn to match Figure 10. The motor mount has 3 axis adjustments to provide the range of motion required to align the blower wheel. It is very important that the blower wheel be aligned correctly to prevent interference with the inlet horn and also to maximize the air flow performance. Figure 10 shows the relative location of the wheel to the inlet horn. Loosen the appropriate bolts on the motor mount to allow the wheel to assume this position. It is recommended that only one axis is worked on at one time. This will make it easier to get the final adjustment. Figure 9. Figure 10. A. On three phase models, the motor can operate in either direction, and the fan will pump air in either direction although output is reduced and noise increases when run backwards. However, for proper suction and airflow, the blower/motor should be turning in a CLOCKWISE direction when viewed from the top of the unit, see Figure 11. B. To verify the correct rotation, remove the top panel and bump start motor (turn on briefly then turn off). Look at the blower wheel, using an inspection mirror if necessary, and make sure the motor is turning clockwise. CAUTION: Do not insert fingers or foreign objects into blower area when wheel is turning as the BI wheel is fully exposed. C. Rotation can be changed by re-wiring the internal motor hookup. This can be done by reversing any two of the 3 incoming electrical wires at either BLOWER ROTATION 3 PHASE Figure 11. Top view. the junction box on the outside of the unit or at the motor junction box. Refer to the motor nameplate before attempting to reverse motor rotation. D. Check motor current with unit running, all filters in place, and door closed. The current should be at or below nameplate full load amp rating. If not, refer to Troubleshooting Guide in Appendix. CAUTION DO NOT RUN MOTOR WITH DOOR OPEN OR FILTERS REMOVED, MOTOR WILL OVERLOAD AND POSSIBLE FAILURE WILL RESULT. 11

MAINTENANCE The standard prefilter for the MIST-PAK model MP30 is a 2, 30% efficiency, Aluminum Mesh filter. When the pre-filter becomes loaded with contaminants, it can be easily removed by opening the filter door, releasing the Mist-Plus filter latches, removing the Mist-Plus filters, then removing the pre-filter. To clean the filter, shake or wash the embedded material from the filter media. ALWAYS WEAR PERSONAL BREATHING PROTECTION DURING THE REMOVAL AND CLEANING OPERATION. Replacement of the filter is the reverse of removal. The main filter is a Mist-Plus bed filter and is highly effective in oil mist environments. For smoke and very fine dust removal, a 95% DOP or 99.97% HEPA extended surface filter is an available external option. These filters can be fitted in the field at a later time if the application for the unit changes. Also available is an external refillable AD Module that holds carbon (or other) adsorption material. The AD Module is followed by a cleanable 2 polyester after-filter to capture any dust from the carbon. NOTE Be sure when installing filters to observe the airflow direction as noted by an arrow on the side of the filter. The unit will not be damaged if incorrectly installed; however, performance will be degraded. FILTER SERVICE Filter service is required when a reduction of airflow (suction) is observed. The optional pressure gauge is used to judge the amount of particulate collected on the filter. As the worker gets accustomed to the unit s effectiveness, and the corresponding gauge reading, the gauge can then become an indicator of filter condition. The optional pressure gauge is calibrated as follows: In most applications, with clean filters, turn unit on and mark the pressure reading on the gauge. Make a second mark at 1.5" higher than initial reading (i.e. if initial reading is 2.0" the second mark should be at 3.5"), see Figure 12. When static pressure reaches the 2 nd mark, all filters should be examined for clean or replace. Figure 12. PG-6 magnahelic gauge. 12

FILTER REPLACEMENT/ REMOVAL FOR CLEANING Whether using a gauge or when airflow reduction is noticed, the following procedure should be followed: 1. Clean/replace prefilter, turn unit back ON, check performance. Normally, performance returns at or close to original setting for the first several cleanings of the prefilter. 2. If no performance improvement is evident after cleaning the prefilter, replace the Mist-Plus main filters. 3. If no performance improvement is evident after steps 1 & 2, replace external filter (on models so equipped). To remove the filters, use the following instructions as a guideline. Refer to Figure 13 for filter and component locations. 1. Turn unit OFF and let motor/blower come to a complete stop. Lock out power source. 2. Open door. 3. Release the Mist-Plus main filter lift by turning the lift rod down, see Figure 13, and remove main filters. ALWAYS WEAR PERSONAL BREATHING PROTECTION DURING THE REMOVAL AND CLEANING OPERATION. 4. Slide the pre-filter out. 5. Slide in cleaned / new pre-filter. 6. Slowly slide in new main filters until each seats fully against back of cabinet. Be careful not to damage the filter media. 7. Secure filters in place by turning filter lift rod up until it locks in place. Replace the access door. 8. Turn the unit ON and check operation and static pressure. 14 HEPA FILTER On models so equipped: cannot be cleaned. See your distributor for replacement. DOP FILTER On models so equipped: cannot be cleaned. See your distributor for replacement. AD MODULE The adsorption material (activated carbon or other) can be emptied from the module and refilled with fresh adsorber. Refer to the Figure 17. Use the large opening to fill the majority of the module. After as much material can be put in as possible, use the small filler hole on the end to top off module. It is important to get the AD module as full as possible as any low spots or air gaps will allow the air being filtered to by-pass or be exposed to a reduced amount of scrubbing. Always dispose of the spent adsorption material in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Follow the instructions below to refill the AD Module. When filtering flammable materials, it may be necessary to have the unit meet Class I, Group D electrical requirements. 1. Remove module and take to a well ventilated area. DUST IS RELEASED DURING REFILLING OPERATION. 2. Remove cover plate and empty module into plastic bag or other approved container. WEAR ADEQUATE PERSONNEL PROTECTIVE DEVICES. 3. Refill with the new adsorber material. After refilling, shake module to pack granules tightly before replacing cover plate to make sure module is full. Remove the end cover plate and top off any void in the module. 4. Vacuum any excess carbon dust that occurs from settling during handling. After re-installing, stay clear of the unit outlet area as some dust may be expelled when unit is first turned on. Figure Dispose of or recycle used material in accordance with applicable laws. OTHER SERVICE Most other components of your MIST-PAK model MP30 air cleaner require little or no routine servicing. Items such as motors, blower wheels, and gaskets should be checked twice a year under normal usage; more frequently under severe 24-hour-per-day usage. Clean, repair, or replace parts as necessary. Check for dirt build-up on blower wheel and other rotating parts which can cause imbalance and resultant vibration or noise, and clean as necessary. Replacement parts are available from your Airflow Systems, Inc. distributor. The following section lists replacement parts for the MIST-PAK model MP30 unit. 14

WIRING MOTOR WIRING GUIDE (BRANCH CIRCUIT) To connect motor for proper voltage and rotation, refer to connection diagram on nameplate or inside terminal/conduit box. If power factor correction capacitors are used for individual motor power factor correction, do not exceed maximum recommended value. All aspects of the installation must conform to the requirements of the NEC, including Article 430 (Motor Circuits and Controllers), and all local codes. Wherever possible, each motor should be powered from a separate circuit of adequate capacity to keep voltage drop to a minimum during starting and running. Increase wire size where motor is located a distance from the power source. Wire size must be adequate to minimize voltage drop during starting and running. Refer to Tables A and B for suggested wire sizes. Distances shown are one-way between source and load. Portable cords, if used, should be as short as possible to minimize voltage drop. Long or inadequately sized cords, especially on hard starting loads, can cause motor failure. Insulate and protect motor lead connections to prevent cut-through from sharp edges and vibration. Tape wire nuts to prevent loosening. All electrical connections in system must be secure to prevent voltage drop and localized heating. Determine direction of rotation before connecting driven equipment to prevent damage. Remove shaft key if motor is to be operated at no-load. On three phase motors, interchange any two line leads (not motor leads) to reverse rotation. On air compressors, rotation of flywheel should direct air towards the cylinders. Look for rotational arrow on flywheel. All motors must be securely and adequately grounded by wiring with a grounded, metal-clad raceway system, using a separate ground bond wire connected to bare metal on the motor frame, or other suitable means. Refer to NEC Article 250 (Grounding) for additional information. Explosion-proof motors incorporating over temperature thermostats should be controlled with a magnetic starter. The thermostat circuit must be wired in series with the holding coil circuit, as shown on tag or nameplate on motor, to remove power from the starter coil if motor overheats.
