6 Plumbing Tips: The size of a pipe or hose is determined by it s inside diameter. Standard pipe sizes are: 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5 & 6. Standard hose sizes are: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5 & 6. When ordering pipe fittings, it may be easier to measure the outside diameter of the pipe threads. Then use the sizing guide below to determine the fitting size needed. When pipe thread sealants are needed, use the right one for the job. Teflon tape is handy but can create problems if not used correctly. NEVER use Teflon tape on hydraulic systems. Small pieces of tape may get into the oil and plug orifices or cause valve spools to stick. Be cautious when using Teflon tape on poly fittings and valves. It is easy to over-tighten these joints and crack the fitting. It is best to use a liquid pipe sealer for these applications. A black sealant (RectorSeal #21) is a good choice for poly fittings.
