2 HANDLING RECOMMENDATIONS Contact Pads for Damage-Free Handling of Printing Papers Damage reduction experts e in the printing n industry are on a mission i to rid their supply chains of out-of-round of- o and damaged rolls. l Paper rolls are often handled 13 times from the paper p mill to the printing press, that's t 13 chances for the roll to be overclamped e because e of excessive e s clamp force. Cascade ad offers a solution on with high-friction, resilient en contact t pads, such as rubber r or urethane, whose frictional characteristics a r c hold rollsl securely e with minimalim clamp force. Rubber and urethane faced pads offer more friction than a cast metal pad, so less clamp force will hold a paperpe roll. This is especially important for newsprint n rolls, which h are more easily damaged by excessive e s e clamp force. The paper industry uses a clamp force factor or CFF, F to determine e how much force can be applied to a roll without damage. This CFF F target t is difficult to attain a without t the use of high-friction pad surfaces. A key benefit of using rubber or urethane pads is the decrease in paper damage from cuts and indentations n caused by less s forgiving metal pads.

3 Cascade offers three special pad types for reducing clamp force on printing papers: RXH Series (Rubber Cross Hatched) Durable non-marking rubber with cross hatch surface offers excellent friction. UDP Series (Urethane Domed Profile) Durable non-marking urethane surface with oval domes for excellent friction and the ability to glide more easily past tightly stacked rolls. Flexipad Diamond pattern rubber surface, bonded to a replaceable flexible spring steel backing. Pad conforms to the roll radius.

6 HERRINGBONE Paper types: Excellent e general purpose pad for most paperp types including ng news print, kraft, tissue s (see tissue section), gypsum board facing, dry-lap (rolled pulp), p white printing n and lithographic/fine h paper. Design features: Diamond pattern provides a multi-purpose u p gripping g surface. Orientation i n of diamond d pattern provides excellent e friction i in horizontal o and vertical directions. Application notes: Available in standard a d size as a cast pad, other sizes as fabricated. Suitable for virgin i or medium recycled c e kraft in average capacity a applications. p Preferred e for unwrapped fine paper p rather than rubber. r Not recommended ed for large kraft rolls with high recycled ed content n approaching ac maximummum clamp capacity. ac For this application a i use the Bar-N-Pocket pad (see page 3). 14 BONDED URETHANE UDP Series (Urethane Domed Profile) Paper types: Supercalendered en e e d SC, milk carton and waxed stock, coated/magazine LWC, kraft linerboard, kraft medium/fluting, preprint, r fine papers, glassine/greaseproof, s a e white printing i and newsprint. n Design features: Durable urethane e bonded d to a special pad casting with a perimeter e edge to protect the urethane when wedging between loads. Urethane e is excellent e pad material a for use on difficult-to- to handle pp papers. Domed oval surface helps prevent ent suction cup action in humid climates, increases e friction and resiliency e of pad surface. Similari durability to rubber. 20 FLEXIPAD Paper types: Designed primarilyr for newsprint industry. Design features: Provides full pad contact c on various diameter rolls by wrapping around the roll. Diamond pattern rubber r with replaceable ab flexi band. Spring style backing on rubber conforms to roll diameter. e Application notes: Conforms to differenten sized rolls from 800 mm mm (31.5" - 55") diameter. Wrap-around around rubber r surface improves friction by conforming o exactly to the roll diameter. Provides very low roll surface pressure. e Flexipad su surface

22 DENSITY BASED TISSUE PAD SELECTION Tissue paperp can be divided into three categories each of which should use a different f style pad. Choosingo the correct tissue s pad type can be simplifiedi by using a technique based on the density of the paper p roll. The density based solution o is based on how the tissue s interacts with the pad as shown in the graphic to the right. Note the tissuesu flowing around the pad in the case of the convex pad and soft tissue. Conversely, e the dense tissue holds its shape and is best handled with a pad that matches the diameter of the roll. The following ow pages outline Cascade's s three tissue pad offerings. f Determination e ti of the optimal pad size is based on the pad surface pressure e and allowable clamp force. Application notes: Pad length and width greater e than standard pad. As a general rule, pad length should be 60-70% of roll l height. 28 TISSUE, CONVEX Paper types: Low-density, soft tissue such as facial, a toilet tissue and soft toweling. Design features: Herringbone r n surface provides excellent e e surface friction. Convex surface with round bar perimeter r provides a smooth transition t n during roll deflection to prevent en tearing. Optional flared ends prevent cutting t of tissue. Hardened wear surface prevents pad wear caused by floor contact. t Application notes: Relatively l large pad to distribute t clamping force over larger area of roll. As a general rule, the length of the pad should be equal to 70%- 75% of the height h of a full parent roll. The width should be proportional po to paper's density. Flared end is not suggested s e for narrow rolls l less than 510 mm (20") wide. Use standard a d convex tissue s pad without t end flare for narrow rolls. Do not use convex pad on hard stock.
