3 The science -How does heat get to us from the sun? Heat is transmitted from the sun via INFRARED RADIATION. The roof absorb the most throughout the day and temperature can reach over 60 C on the roof, resulting in indoor temperature of above 30 C Electromagnetic Waves from 700 nanometers to 1,000,000 nanometers are known as INFRARED RADIATION. Houses and buildings, the roofs and walls absorb all this INFRARED RADIATION. The roofs absorb the most throughout the day and reach temperatures of up to over 60 C.

4 The electromagnetic spectrum of sunlight Sunlight comprises waves of different wavelengths While waves on both ends of the spectrum are filtered off by the Earth s atmosphere, most of the waves from the infrared to the ultraviolet spectrum are able to penetrate the atmosphere. The ultraviolet waves carry high energy levels and can cause materials to deteriorate and bring about skin cancer. The infrared waves carry heat and are responsible for warming up the earth.

Most materials used in building construction --brick, stone, wood, paper, and so on --regardless of their color, absorb infrared radiation at about 90%. The surface of aluminum has the ability NOT TO ABSORB, but TO REFLECT 95% of the infrared rays which strike it. Since aluminum foil has such a low mass to air ratio, very little conduction can take place, particularly when only 5% of the rays are absorbed. Summer/Winter

6 What solves this radiant heat problem? The most commonly thought way is by CONDUCTION and because of this the material used to keep out heat is called INSULATION. Insulation does not work to keep radiation out. It absorbs radiant heat and progressively saturates it with heat and then radiates heat thru. It just slows down the heat transmission, not reflecting the heat. To keep out, we need a RADIANT HEAT BARRIER Introducing.
