SELF PROPELLED BEDDING CHOPPER WARRANTY Valmetal Incorporated (Valmetal) warrants new Self propelled bedding chopper to be free from defects in material and workmanship, under normal use and service. Obligation under this warranty shall extend for a period of 1 year (12 months) following the date of delivery to the original purchaser and shall be limited to replacement or repair at Valmetal s choice of any parts found to be defective upon inspection by Valmetal. WARRANTY CLAIMS The purchaser claiming under this warranty shall submit a warranty claim in the prescribed form to Valmetal or an Authorized Dealer, for inspection by an authorized company representative. LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY This warranty is expressly in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied and all other obligations or liabilities on Valmetal s part of any kind or character, including liabilities for alleged representations or negligence. We neither assume nor authorize any other person to assume on our behalf, any liability in connection with the subsequent sale of the Bedding chopper. This warranty shall not apply to any Bedding chopper which has been altered outside the factory in any way if, according to Valmetal, the alterations affected the Bedding chopper operation and reliability, or if the Chopper has been subject to misuse or accident. This warranty does not apply to parts that are under warranty by the original manufacturer and for which service can be obtained directly through authorized service centers. No warranty is extended to regular service items such as knives, v-belts, lubricants, paint and the like. OPERATOR S MANUAL The Purchaser acknowledges having received training on safe operation of the Self propelled bedding chopper and further acknowledges that Valmetal does not assume any liability resulting from the operation of the Bedding chopper in any manner other than described in the Operator s Manual supplied at the time of purchase. 5 SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION Congratulations on your choice of a ValMetal Self propelled bedding chopper to complement your farming operation. This equipment has been designed and manufactured to meet the needs of a discerning livestock industry. Safe, efficient and trouble free operation of your ValMetal Bedding chopper requires that you and anyone else who will be operating or maintaining the Chopper, read and understand the Safety, Operation and Maintenance informations contained in the Operator's Manual. This manual covers the Models 01A manufactured by ValMetal. Keep this manual handy for frequent reference and to pass on to new operators or owners. Call your ValMetal Dealer or Distributor if you need assistance or information. OPERATOR ORIENTATION - The directions left, right, front and rear, as mentioned throughout this manual, are as seen from behind the guide bar and facing in the direction of the Chopper. 1

6 SECTION 2 SAFETY SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL This Safety Alert symbol means ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! The Safety Alert symbol identifies important safety messages on the Valmetal Bedding chopper and in the manual. When you see this symbol, be alert to the possibility of personal injury or death. Follow the instructions in the safety message. Why is SAFETY important to you? 3 Big Reasons Accidents Disable and Kill Accidents Cost Accidents Can be avoided Note the use of the signal words DAN- GER, WARNING and CAUTION with the safety messages. The appropriate signal word for each message has been selected using the following guide-lines: SIGNAL WORDS: DANGER - CAUTION - An immediate and specific hazard which WILL result in severe personal injury or death if the proper precautions are not taken. A specific hazard or unsafe practice which COULD result in severe personal injury or death if proper precautions are not taken. WARNING - Unsafe practices which COULD result in personal injury if proper practices are not taken, or as a reminder of good safety practices. 2

7 IMPORTANT 2.1 GENERAL SAFETY YOU are responsible for the SAFE operation and maintenance of your ValMetal Self propelled bedding chopper. YOU must ensure that you and anyone else who is going to operate, maintain or work around the machine be familiar with the operating and maintenance procedures and related SAFETY information contained in this manual. Remember, YOU are the key to safety. Good safety practices not only protect you but also the people around you. Make these practices a working part of your safety program. Be certain that EVERYONE operating this equipment is familiar with the recommended operating and maintenance procedures and follows all the safety precautions. Most accidents can be prevented. Do not risk injury or death by ignoring good safety practices. Bedding chopper owners must give operating instructions to operators or employees before allowing them to operate the machine, and at least annually thereafter per OSHA regulation The most important safety device on this equipment is a SAFE operator. It is the operator's responsibility to read and understand ALL Safety and Operating instructions in the manual and to follow these. All accidents can be avoided. A person who has not read and understood all operating and safety instructions is not qualified to operate the machine. An untrained operator exposes himself and bystanders to possible serious injury or death. Do not modify the equipment in any way. Unauthorized modification may impair the function and/or safety and could affect the Iife of the machine. Think SAFETY! Work SAFELY! 1. Read and understand the Operator's Manual and all safety signs before operating, maintaining or adjusting the Bedding chopper. 2. Have a first-aid kit available for use should the need arise and know how to use it. 3. Have a fire extinguisher available for use should the need arise and know how to use it. 4. Wear appropriate protective gear. This list includes but is not limited to: - A hard hat - Protective shoes with slip resistant soles - Protective glasses or goggles - Heavy gloves - Wet weather gear - Hearing protection - Respirator or filter mask 5. Install and secure all guards before starting. 6. Wear appropriate ear protection for prolonged exposure to excessive noise. 7. Do not allow riders. 8. Release direction/speed lever, disengage tub rotation control, raise rotor grate, disengage rotor, stop engine, remove ignition wire and wait for all moving parts to stop before servicing, maintaining, adjusting, repairing or unplugging. 9. Clear the area of people, especially small children, before starting the unit. 10. Review safety related items annually with all personnel who will be operating or maintaining the Bedding chopper. 3

8 2.2 OPERATING SAFETY 1. Read and understand the Operator's Manual and all safety signs before operating, servicing, adjusting, repairing, unplugging or filling. 2. Do not allow riders. 3. Install and secure all guards and shields before starting or operating. 4. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away from moving parts. 5. Never climb into the Chopper tub or place hands in any opening when the engine is running. 6. Release direction/speed lever, disengage tub rotation control, raise rotor grate, disengage rotor, stop engine, remove ignition wire and wait for all moving parts to stop before servicing, maintaining, adjusting, repairing or unplugging. 7. Place all controls in neutral before starting. 8. Operate machine only while standing behing guiding bar. 9. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small children, before starting. 10. Allow engine to cool for 5 minutes before refueling. 11. Do not smoke while refueling. Do not allow others to smoke. 12. Never operate the machine inside a closed building unless it has adequate ventilation. 13. Do not reach into tub while the engine is running even if rotor is not activated. 14. Make sure all hydraulic components are tight, not damaged and free of leaks before using. 15. Review safety instructions with all operators annually. 2.3 MAINTENANCE SAFETY 1. Follow ALL the operating, maintenance and safety information in the manual. 2. Support the machine with blocks or safety stands when changing tires or working beneath it. 3. Release direction/speed lever, disengage tub rotation control, raise rotor grate, disengage rotor, stop engine, remove ignition wire and wait for all moving parts to stop before servicing, maintaining, adjusting, repairing or unplugging. 4. Follow good Shop Practices - Keep service area clean and dry. - Be sure electrical outlets and tools are properly grounded - Use adequate light for the job at hand 5. Remove wire from spark plug before working on machine. 6. Do not adjust drive belts when the engine is running. 7. Make sure all guards and access doors are in place and properly secured when maintenance work is completed. 8. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away from moving and/or rotating parts. 9. Never wear ill-fitting, baggy or frayed clothing when working around or on any of the drive system components. 10. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small children, when carrying out any maintenance and repairs or making any adjustments. 11. Be careful when working around or maintaining high-pressure hydraulic system. Wear proper eye and hand protection when searching for a high-pressure hydraulic leak. Use a piece of wood or cardboard as a back-stop when searching for a pin hole leak in a hose or steel line. 12. Seek immediate medical attention if a high-pressure stream of hydraulic fluid pierces the skin, as toxic reaction and infection could develop. 13. Wear heavy canvas or leather gloves when working with the rotor or knives. 4

9 2.4 HYDRAULIC SAFETY 1. Make sure that all components in the hydraulic system are kept in good condition and are clean. 2. Replace any worn, cut, abraded, flattened or crimped hoses and steel lines. 3. Before applying pressure to the system, make sure all components are tight and that lines, hoses and couplings are not damaged. 4. Do not attempt any makeshift repairs to the hydraulic lines, fittings or hoses by using tape, clamps or cements. The hydraulic system operates under extremely high-pressure. Such repairs will fail suddenly and create a hazardous and unsafe condition. 5. Wear proper hand and eye protection when searching for a high pressure hydraulic leak. Use a piece of wood or cardboard as a backstop instead of hands to isolate and identify a leak. 6. If injured by a concentrated high-pressure stream of hydraulic fluid, seek medical attention immediately. Serious infection or toxic reaction can develop from hydraulic fluid piercing the skin surface. 2.6 TIRE SAFETY 1. Failure to follow proper procedures when mounting a tire on a wheel or rim can produce an explosion which may result in serious injury or death. 2. Do not attempt to mount a tire unless you have the proper equipment and experience to do the job. 3. Have a qualified tire dealer or repair service perform required tire maintenance. 2.7 REFUELING SAFETY 1. Handle fuel with care. It is highly flammable. 2. Allow engine to cool for 5 minutes before refueling. Clean up spilled fuel before restarting engine. 3. Do not refuel the machine while smoking or when near open flame or sparks. 4. Fill fuel tank outdoors. 5. Prevent fires by keeping machine clean of accumulated trash, grease or debris. 2.5 BATTERY SAFETY 1. Keep all sparks and flames away from batteries, as gas given off by electrolyte is explosive. 2. Avoid contact with battery electrolyte; wash off any spilled electrolyte immediately. 3. Wear safety glasses when working near batteries. 4. Do not tip batteries more than 45 degrees to avoid electrolyte loss. 5. To avoid injury from sparks or short circuit, disconnect battery ground cable before servicing any part of electrical system. 2.8 STORAGE SAFETY 1. Store The Chopper on a firm, level surface. 2. Store the Chopper in an area away from human activity. 3. Do not permit children to play on or around the stored machine. 4. Make sure the unit is sitting, or blocked up firm and solid and will not tip or sink into a soft area. 5. Cover with a weather-proof tarpaulin and tie down securely. 5

10 2.9 SAFETY DECALS 1. Keep safety decals and signs clean and readable at all times. 2. Replace safety decals and signs that are missing or have become illegible. 3. Replaced parts that displayed a safety sign should also display the current sign. 4. Safety decals or signs are available from your Dealer Parts Department or the factory. How to install Safety DecaIs : * Be sure that the installation area is clean and dry. * Decide on the exact position before you remove the backing paper. * Remove the smallest portion of the split backing paper. * Align the decal over the specified area and carefully press the small portion with the exposed sticky backing in place. * Slowly peel back the remaining paper and carefully smooth the remaining portion of the decal in place. * Small air pockets can be pierced with a pin and smoothed out using the piece of decal backing paper. 6

11 2.10 SIGN-OFF FORM ValMetal inc. follows the general Safety Standards specified by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Anyone who will be operating and/or maintaining the Self propelled bedding chopper must read and clearly understand ALL Safety, Operating and Maintenance information presented in this manual. Do not operate or allow anyone else to operate this equipment until such information has been reviewed. Annually review this information. Make these periodic reviews of SAFETY and OPERATION a standard practice for all of your equipment. We feel that an untrained operator is unqualified to operate this machine. A sign-off sheet is provided for your record keeping to show that all personnel who will be working with the equipment have read and understand the information in the Operator's Manual and have been instructed in the operation of the equipment. 12 SECTION 3 SAFETY DECALS LOCATION The types of decals and locations on the equipment are shown in the illustration below. Good safety requires that you familiarize yourself with the various Safety Decals, the type of warning and the area, particular function related to that area, that requires your SAFETY AWARENESS. Think SAFETY! Work SAFELY! REMEMBER - If Safety Decals have been damaged, removed, become illegible or parts replaced without decals, new decals must be applied. New decals are available from your authorized dealer. 8

14 SECTION 4 OPERATION OPERATING SAFETY 1. Read and understand the Operator's Manual and all safety signs before operating, servicing, adjusting, repairing, unplugging or filling. 2. The engagement / disengagement of the rotor rotation is made by tensionning or loosening the two rotor v-belts. Be very carefull, this is not a positive clutch system and it might happen that the rotor continue to turn even when the tension on the belts is released and the belts are loose. Never reach into the tub or inside the rotor housing while motor is running. Always stop engine and wait for all moving parts to stop before servicing, adjusting or unplugging. 3. Do not allow riders. 4. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away from moving parts. 4.1 TO THE NEW OPERATOR OR OWNER It is the responsibility of the owner or operator to read this manual and to train all other operators before they start working with the machine. Follow all safety instructions exactly. Safety is everyone's business. By following recommended procedures, a safe working environments is provided for the operator, bystanders and the area around the worksite. Untrained operators are not qualified to operate this machine. Many features incorporated into this machine are the result of suggestions made by customers like you. Read this manual carefully to learn how to operate the machine safely and how to set it to provide maximum efficiency. By following the operating instructions in conjunction with a good maintenance program, your Self propelled bedding chopper will provide many years of trouble-free service. 5. Do not smoke when refueling. 6. Never operate the machine inside a closed building unless there is adequate ventilation. 7. Run machine only while standing behind the guide bar at the operator's position. 10. Place all controls in neutral before starting. 11. Release direction/speed control, disengage tub rotation control, raise rotor grate, disengage rotor, stop engine, remove ignition wire and wait for all moving parts to stop before servicing, maintaining, adjusting, repairing or unplugging. 12. 16 4.3 BREAK-IN Although there are no operational restrictions on the machine when used for the first time, it is recommended that the following mechanical items be checked: A. Before starting: 1. Read the Operators Manual and all safety decal before starting. B. After operating for 1 hour: 1. Retorque all wheel bolts and axle nuts. 2. Check the air pressure in the tires. Add if required. 3. Check alignment of the pulleys. Align as required. 4. Retorque all other fasteners and hardware. C. After operating for 10 hours: 1. Repeat steps 1 through 4 listed before. (Section B). 2. Check tension of all belts. Adjust if required. 3. Change the engine oil. 4. Then go to the normal service schedule as defined in the Maintenance section. 4.4 PRE-OPERATION CHECK LIST Efficient and safe operation of the ValMetal Self propelled bedding chopper requires that each operator reads and understands the operating procedures and all related safety precautions outlined in this section. A pre-operation checklist is provided for the operator. It is important to follow this checklist in order to ensure personal safety and the good mechanical condition of the machine. Before operating the Bedding chopper and each time thereafter, the following areas should be checked off: 1. Lubricate the machine according to the schedule outlined in the Maintenance Section. 2. Check engine oil level. Add as required. 3. Check hydraulic fluid level. Add as required. 4. Check tension and alignment of all belts and pulleys. Tension or align as required. 5. Check that all bearings turn freely. Replace any that are rough or siezed. 6. Check the grate and rotor. Remove any twine, wire or other material that has become entangled. 7. Check the condition of the knives on the rotor. Repair or replace any bent or broken sections. 8. Ensure that the tires are inflated to the specified pressure. 9. Check that all hydraulic fittings and connections are tight and in good condition. 10. Be sure all guards and shields are in place, secured and functioning as intended. 11. Clean all straw, chaff and debris from machine. 12

17 4.5 CONTROLS All controls are conveniently positioned next to where the operator would stand when running the machine. Review this section to familiarize yourself with the location and function of each control. 1. Tub Rotation Control: Located on the left corner of the machine. Move the control lever to the left in a clockwise motion to engage the tub rotation drive. Move the control right in a counter-clockwise direction to disengage the drive. 3. Rotor Drive Control: The control lever to engage the rotor drive is located on the center of the frame under the guide bar. Move the lever up to engage the rotor drive. Move the lever down to disengage the drive. CAUTION The engagement / disengagement of the rotor rotation is made by tensionning or loosening the two rotor v-belts. This is made with the help of a lever located above the steering wheel (lift to engage, lower to release). Be very carefull, this is not a positive clutch system and it might happen that the rotor continue to turn even when the tension on the belts is released and the belts are loose. Never reach into the tub or inside the rotor housing while motor is running. Always stop engine and wait for all moving parts to stop before servicing, adjusting or unplugging. Fig. 2 Tub rotation control 2. Grate Height Control: Two intermeshing levers, located in the center next to the rotating tub, control the height of the grate over the knives. Position the levers in their lowest slot to lift the grate and stop the shredding process. Position the levers in their top slot to lower the grate to allow the material in the tub into the knives for shredding. Fig. 4 Rotor drive control 4. Gas engine Controls: (see figure 5) Fig. 3 Grate height control A. Engine Stop Switch: Turn the switch clockwise to turn the engine ON. Turn the switch counter-clockwise to turn the engine OFF. B. Fuel Shut Off: Mover the lower sliding control to the left to shut off the fuel supply to the engine. Move the lever to the right to open the fuel supply. IMPORTANT! Always shut off fuel valve after turning off engine 13

18 C. Choke: Move the top sliding control to the left to close the choke for starting when engine is cold. Move the control to the right as engine warms to open choke. D. Throttle: Move the throttle to the right to run the engine at low RPM. Move the control to the left to increase engine RPM. E. Rope Pull for starting: Located on right side of engine flywheel. Pull sharply when starting engine. Fig. 6 Materiel outlet doors 4. Direction/Speed Control: A self-contained hydrostatic system controls the speed and direction of the Bedding chopper. A lever, located on the guide bar control the hydrostatic system. a. Pressing the lever forward produces a forward motion. Pressing it further increases forward speed. b. Pressing the lever backward produces a reverse direction. Pressing it further increases the speed in reverse. Fig. 5 Gas engine controls 6. Material Outlet Doors: Two outlet doors on the left side control the flow of material out of the machine. The door is normally raised all the way to allow 1/2 the material to be distributed over a wide area. The other door is opened part way to distribute 1/2 the material next to the machine. 19 4.6 OPERATING The Valmetal Self propelled bedding chopper can quickly and efficiently shred compacted bulk material to distribute and spred evenly over a surface. When using the machine, follow these procedures: IMPORTANT! New operators or people who have not operated the unit for a period of time should review the location and function of all controls before starting. It is recommended that they move the machine to a large open area and practice operating. This practice will familiarize them with the controls of the machine. 1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small children, before starting. 2. Review and follow the Pre-Operation Checklist (see Section 4.4). 3. Do not operate the machine in a closed building unless there is adequate ventilation. 4. Be sure that all guards and access doors are in place and secured before starting. 5. Do not climb into the tub or place hands in any opening when the engine is running. 6. Be sure that the tub rotation and knife drive controls are disengaged and the tub grate is in its highest position. 7. Place a bale into the tub (figure 8 and 9). Fig. 9 Loading the tub 8. Remove the strings and dispose of them away from the machine and working area. 9. If required, load up to 2 other bales. 10. Starting engine a. Turn the switch to the ON position. b. Open the fuel supply valve. c. Move the throttle into its mid-range position. d. Close the choke if the engine is cold or if the unit has not been run for a while. Fig. 8 Right way to place a bale into the tub e. Pull sharply on the starter rope to start the engine or turn the ignition switch to the START position. f. Gradually open the choke as the engine warms to operating temperature. g. Open the throttle to provide maximum power and RPM when operating. 11. Use the direction/speed lever and maneuver the machine into position. WARNING Never attempt to remove strings while the engine is running. If the strings get caught in the knives, you could easily be pulled into the tub before you can let go! Attention: Use care when driving over ruts, bumps or rough ground. Since the machine has a 3 point stance, it can tip rather easily if travelling too fast. Drive slow! Do not drive the machine across a slope. Always drive directly up or down to prevent tipping. 15

20 12. Open a material outlet door (figure 12) 1/2 way and the other all the way open. Adjust them to give the required distribution pattern and coverage. 13. Move the knife control lever up to engage the knife drive. 14. Set the grate control levers to give the desired material feed rate. It is recommended that a slow feed rate be used to provide good control over the shredding and distributing of material. 15. Engage the tub rotation control. The vanes inside the tub will turn the bale and feed the material into the rotating knives. (figure 11) Fig. 11 Vanes 21. Repeat steps 6 through 19 to distribute the bale. Fig. 10 Bedding 16. Move the machine past the area to be covered. 17. By varying the material feed rate and how fast the operator moves the machine, a thick or thin layer of bedding can be distributed. With a little practice, the operator will quickly learn what rates give the best coverage. 18. At the highest feed rate, the machine can shred and distribute a bale in about a minute. Be sure you are aware of how thick you wish to distribute. This machine can lay down a thick layer very quickly. 19. When the bales in the tub are used up, place all controls in neutral, raise the grate and shut off the engine. 20. Add other bales into the tub. 16

21 4.7 STORAGE STORAGE SAFETY 1. Store the machine in an area away from human activity. 2. Do not allow children to play around the stored unit. 3. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug PLACING IN STORAGE After the season's use or when the machine will not be used for period of time, completely inspect all major systems of the Bedding chopper. Replace or repair any worn or damaged components to prevent any unnecessary down time at the beginning of next season. Follow this procedure before storing: 1. Remove all material from the machine. 2. Open the material outlet doors. 3. Thoroughly wash the machine using a water hose or a pressure washer to remove all dirt, mud, manure, debris or residue. 4. Inspect all rotating parts for entangled material. Remove all entangled materials such as twine, wire, etc. 5. Check the condition of the belts and pulleys. Replace or adjust as required. 6. Check the condition of knives. Repair or replace any bent or broken sections. 7. Inspect the hydraulic system for leaks or loose fittings. Tighten as required. 11. Block up the machine to take the load off the tires. If the unit is stored outside and exposed to sunshine, it is recommended that the tires be removed and stored inside. 12. Disconnect the spark plug wire. 13. Remove the battery (electric start option) and store it in a cool and dry area on wooden blocks or on a wooden pallet. Charge it monthly to maintain an adequate charge. 14. It is best to store the machine inside. If that is not possible, cover with a waterproof tarpaulin and tie down securely. 15. Store in an area away from human activity. 16. Do not allow children to play around the stored unit REMOVING FROM STORAGE When removing the machine from storage, follow this procedure: 1. Remove the tarpaulin if covered. 2. Install the wheels if they were removed. 3. Remove blocks from frame if supported. 4. Install and connect the battery (electric start option). 5. Connect the spark plug wire. 6. Review and follow the Pre-Operation Checklist (Section 4.4). If the machine has been stored for more than 6 months, warm the engine by running it for 2-3 minutes and drain the oil. Change the oil while the oil is warm to remove any condensation. Refer to Maintenance Section. 8. Lubricate all grease fittings with one shot of grease to displace any residual moisture. 9. Run the machine at low idle for 1 minute to distribute the lubricants to all surfaces. 10. Touch up all paint nicks and scratches to prevent rusting. 17

22 SECTION 5 SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE MAINTENANCE SAFETY 1. Follow ALL the operating, maintenance and safety information in the manual. 2. The engagement / disengagement of the rotor rotation is made by tensionning or loosening the two rotor v-belts. Be very carefull, this is not a positive clutch system and it might happen that the rotor continue to turn even when the tension on the belts is released and the belts are loose. Never reach into the tub or inside the rotor housing while motor is running. Always stop engine and wait for all moving parts to stop before servicing, adjusting or unplugging. 3. Support the machine with blocks or safety stands when changing tires or working beneath the machine. 4. Release direction/speed lever, disengage tub rotation control, raise rotor grate, disengage rotor, stop engine, remove ignition wire and wait for all moving parts to stop before servicing, maintaining, adjusting, repairing or unplugging. 5. Do not adjust drive belts when the engine is running. 6. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away from moving parts. 7. Make sure that all guards and access doors are closed and secured before operating or servicing the Bedding chopper. 8. Never wear ill-fitting, baggy or frayed clothing when working around or on any of the drive system components. 9. Wear heavy canvas or leather gloves when working with the rotor or knives. 10. Be careful when working around a high-pressure hydraulic system. Wear proper eye and hand protection when searching for leak. Use a piece of wood or cardboard as a back-drop when searching for leaks. 5.1 SERVICE FUEL, FLUIDS AND LUBRICANTS 1. Grease Use an SAE multi-purpose high temperature grease with extreme pressure (EP) performance. Also acceptable is an SAE multi-purpose lithium base grease. 2. Fuel Use a regular unleaded gas for all operating conditions. (1.6 US gal or 6.1 liters capacity). 3. Engine Oil and Air Cleaner Use a typical multi-viscosity motor oil for all operating conditions (SAE 10W30). Consult engine manual for operating in cold temperatures (1.1 US quart or 1.1 liter capacity crankcase). 80 cc oil capacity in air cleaner (if epuiped). 4. Storing Lubricants Your machine can operate at top efficiency only if clean lubricants are used. Use clean containers to handle all lubricants. Store them in an area protected from dust, moisture and other contaminants GREASING Refer to Section for recommended grease. Use the Maintenance Checklist provided to keep a record of all scheduled maintenance. 1. Use only a hand-held grease gun for all greasing. Air powered greasing systems can damage the seals on bearings and lead to early bearing failure. 2. Do not give sealed bearings more than 1 shot of grease every 3 months. 11. Seek immediate attention if hydraulic fluid penetrates the skin as toxic reaction and infection could develop. 18

Use a high-pressure air hose to blow the trash, dust and debris off the engine and out of the engine compartment. Wait 5 minutes to cool engine before refueling! A. Always use the proper container to refuel. B. Remember the fuel tank is small. Use only the required amount. C. Do not over fill fuel tank. Resulting spilled fuel can create a fire hazard. 26 5.2 MAINTENANCE CHANGING ENGINE OIL 1. Review the Operator's Manual for the engine. 2. Allow the engine to cool before changing oil. Hot oil can cause burns if it contacts exposed skin. 3. Be sure the spark plug wire is removed from the spark plug. 4. Place a 2 quart pan under the drain plug. 5. Remove the drain plug and allow oil to drain for 10 minutes. 6. Install the engine drain plug. 7. Dispose of the oil in an approved container. 8. Add 1 quart US (1 liter) of SAE 10W30 motor oil. 9. Run the engine for 1 minute and check for leaks. 10. Check engine oil level. Top up as required. The oil should come to the top of the filler neck. Be sure the engine is level. NOTE! Always use genuine ValMetal replacement parts to insure proper oil filtration. OIL LEVEL Fig. 20 Engine oil level CLEANING ENGINE AND COMPARTMENT Dirt, dust and trash can build up in the engine compartment. Use a high-pressure air hose to keep the engine and compartment clean. Clean the air intake louvres as required to insure that a free flow of outside air is maintained to the engine. Blow out the compartment annually or more often if operating in very dirty conditions. 27 5.2.3 TUB ROTATION DRIVE BELT TIGHTENING When the tub rotation drive is engaged, an idler is moved into position to tighten the belt and transmit power. As the belt wears and stretches, it will be necessary to move the belt adjuster pulley to maintain proper tension. To set belt tension, follow this procedure: 1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially children. 2. Stop engine, shut off fuel supply lever, remove ignition key (electric start models), disengage drives and wait for all moving parts to stop. 3. Engage the tub rotation drive control. 4. Check the tension of the belt by applying a small force to the center of the belt span. It should deflect from 1/2 to 1 inch (12 to 25 mm) in either direction BELT REPLACEMENT To replace the belt, follow this procedure: 1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small children. 2. Stop engine, shut off fuel supply lever, remove ignition key (electric start models), disengage all drives and wait for all moving parts to stop. 3. Loosen the bolts holding the rear tub guide wheels. 4. Slide the tub guide wheels back in their slots. IMPORTANT! NEVER LOOSEN THE FRONT TUB GUIDE WHEELS! 5. If the belt deflection is greater than 1 inch (25 mm), the idler should be adjusted to provide more movement. 6. Turn the turnbuckle on the control lever to provide more movement on the idler pulley. 7. Recheck the belt tension. If the turnbuckle does not provide sufficient adjustment to tighten the belt, the belt will have to be replaced. Fig. 23 Tub guide wheels 5. Slide the belt down the lower edge of the tub and raise the tub to slide the belt under it. 6. Slip the belt out from around the gearbox and the tightener pulley. 7. Remove the bolt holding the grate height control in position (fig. 24 on next page). 8. V-belt is now free and can be replaced. 9. Proceed backward to install a new belt. 10. Tighten the grate height control bolt. 11. Tighten the rear tub guide wheels. 12. Adjust the turnbuckle to provide the required belt tension. 13. Check the belt tension after running for 10 hours. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small children. 2. Stop engine, shut off fuel supply lever, remove ignition key (electric start models), disengage all drives and wait for all moving parts to stop. 3. Move the turnbuckle until the idler pulley is in its highest position. 4. Loosen speed reducer mount holding bolts and remove all rotor V-belts. 5. Install the new belts and reinstall the reducer v- belt 6. Tension and tighten reducer mount bolts. 7. Adjust the turnbuckles to give the required belt tension. 8. After 10 hours of running, check the belts tension. Adjust as required. 7. Recheck the belts tension. If the turnbuckle does not provide sufficient adjustment to tighten the belts, the belts will have to be replaced. 24

29 5.3 REPAIRS IMPORTANT! During normal operation, the only component that normally will require replacement is the knife assembly on the shredding rotor. Read this section carefully before attempting to remove the rotor for repair. Do not attempt to remove the rivets to change a blade on a disc, you must replace the entire disc. 5. Remove the 2 bolts securing the hinged cover to the main housing and flip over the hinged cover and tub to gain access to the rotor (fig. 27). WARNING 1. Always wear heavy canvas or leather gloves when working with the knives on the rotor. 2. Knives are sharp and can give serious cuts. 3. Never use your hands to keep the rotor from turning KNIFE REPLACEMENT To replace a knife disc, follow this procedure: 1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small children. 2. Be sure the fuel valve is OFF, the spark plug wire is disconnected and all drives are in neutral. Fig. 27 Acces to the rotor 6. Place a block of wood between the housing and the knives to prevent the rotor from turning when loosening the rotor clamping nut. Use the wrench provided with the machine to loosen the clamping nut (fig. 28). 3. Loosen tub belt guard bolts and slide guard backward to clear the way for the tub and disengage the tub V-belt (fig. 26). 4. Remove V-belt from reducer pulley Fig. 28 Loosening the clamping nut 7. Remove rotor V-belts, unfasten and take out bearing bolts. 8. Remove the rotor from the machine and place it on a wooden surface to change knife discs. 30 9. When replacing a knife disc, remove the disc with the damaged knife. Install a new disc using only genuine ValMetal replacement parts. 10. When reversing cutting edges of the knife discs, always discard the discs with chipped, bent or broken knife. Replace with new original discs. IMPORTANT! Use only genuine ValMetal parts for all repairs to the machine. The rotor is made with special balanced knife discs and spacers. Non-genuine discs or knives might create excessive vibration and/or hit other parts of the machine. 11. Proceed backward, step by step to reinstall. Place the roror in the machine. 12. Place a block of wood between the knives and the bottom of the machine to keep the rotor from turning (fig. 29). Tighten the clamping nut using the wrench supplied. Be sure that all discs and spacers seat properly. Fig. 30 Knife pattern 13. Lower the hinged cover with tub in position and secure the 2 bolts. Be sure the grate moves freely and verify the drive pulleys alignment. 14. Place the belt on the reducer pulley and around the tub. 15. Check all belts tension and replace all removed belt guards.
