Mounting to Wood NOTICE When mounting to a wood structure, a spring-type washer must be used between the square washer and the nut, to maintain fastener tightness in the event of wood shrinkage. See Figure 3. Spring-type washer Figure 3. Applying spring washer. Uncrating the Switch Step 1 Remove the switch poles and bell-crank base(s) or bracket(s), if applicable, from their crates and arrange them on the ground in the same order in which they will be mounted on the structure. Protect the bearings from contamination by dirt, mud, oil, etc. If necessary, use blocks to keep the bearings clear of the ground. Attaching Couplings to Switch Poles Operating lever Pipe coupling Step 2 Attach pipe couplings to the operating lever of each switch pole. Each pipe coupling includes ¹ ₄-inch and ³ ₈-inch spacers. Position the spacers, included with each coupling, as shown in the section views on the erection drawing (ED). See Figures 4 and 5. Figure 4. Assembling pipe coupling to operating lever interphase pipe on both sides of operating lever. Operating lever Pipe coupling Figure 5. Assembling pipe coupling to operating lever interphase pipe on one side of operating lever

Attaching Bell-Crank Step 3 Attach the bell-crank assembly to its base or bracket (pole-mounted arrangements only). See Figure 6. Figure 6. Attaching bell-crank assembly. Attaching Couplings to Bell-Crank Step 4 For mounting configurations that use a bellcrank mounted between switch poles, the bellcrank will be connected to the interphase pipe by a flat-bar or pipe-type drag link and an offset coupling. Attach one end of the drag link to the driven arm of the bell-crank. Attach the offset coupling to the other end of the drag link. See Figure 7. Drag link Offset coupling Driven arm of bell-crank Figure 7. Typical outboard bearing configuration, vertically mounted between switch poles

Lifting the Switch Ç CAUTION Do not lift the switch by rigging to the live parts, nor subject these parts to undue stress from slings or fall lines. Misalignment of the contacts and the interrupters may result from improper handling. Step 5 Hoist the switch poles and bolt them into position as shown on the erection drawing (ED). See Figure 8. Ç CAUTION Make sure that the surfaces on which the switch pole bases are mounted are flat and true. Mounting to an uneven surface can cause the bases to twist, placing undue strain on the insulators and throwing the blades out of alignment, resulting in difficulties operating the switch. Use shims as required. Figure 8. Hoisting switch pole into position. Step 6 Hoist the bell-crank assembly, including base or bracket, and bolt it into position as shown on the erection drawing (ED). See Figure 9. Figure 9. Hoisting bell-crank into position

Step 7 To minimize time-consuming final adjustments, make sure that the switch is fully closed. Tie the switch blades to their stationary main contacts. See Figure 10. Tie Figure 10. Tieing switch blade to main contacts. Step 8 Make sure that the bell-crank is held in the 45-degree position. The bell-crank and bellcrank bearing have indexing ridges to facilitate alignment. See Figure degree position marks Figure 11. Bell-crank in 45-degree position

Installing Pipe Couplings with Piercing Set Screws Ç WARNING Failure to properly install pipe couplings with piercing set screws can cause slippage of operating pipe, resulting in improper operation of the switch, arcing, equipment damage, or electrical shock. To properly install piercing set screws: 1. Make sure that the cutting tip of the piercing set screw does not protrude through the body of the clamp. 2. Insert the operating pipe section into the coupling and finger-tighten the clamp bolt(s). 3. Adjust the operating pipe to the correct length. Then tighten the clamp bolt(s) to final tightness. 4. Tighten the piercing set screw, piercing the pipe, and continue turning until a firm resistance is felt. 5. Make sure that the clamp bolt(s) are tight. See Figure 12. Clamp bolt Coupling body Piercing set screw Piercing set screw in shipping position (cutting tip does not protrude through body of the clamp) Clamp Slug pierced from pipe Operating pipe installed, clamp bolt fully tightened, and piercing set screw in final position Figure 12. Installing pipe couplings

Installing Interphase Pipe Step 9 Install the pipe sections connecting the switch poles and the bell-crank assembly. See Figure 13. Follow the directions in Installing Pipe Couplings with Piercing Set Screws on page 12. Torque the clamp bolt of each pipe-coupling clamp to final tightness, but do not tighten the associated piercing set screw, until so directed in Step 24 beginning on page 21, after the mechanism has been adjusted to attain full closure of all three poles. Interphase pipe sections Figure 13. Pipe connecting switch poles. Step 10 If the bell-crank is mounted outboard of the switch poles, install the pipe section connecting the driven arm of the bell-crank to the nearest switch pole. See Figure 14. Follow the directions in Installing Pipe Couplings with Piercing Set Screws on page 12. Torque the clamp bolt of each pipe-coupling clamp to final tightness. Then tighten the associated piercing set screw, piercing the pipe, and continue turning until a firm resistance is felt. Connecting pipe Driven arm of bell-crank Figure 14. Pipe connecting bell-crank

Step 11 If the bell-crank is mounted between switch poles, connect the drag link to the interphase pipe, using the offset coupling previously attached to the drag link in Step 4. See Figure 15. Interphase pipe Drag link Figure 15. Connecting drag link to interphase pipe. Installing Vertical Operating Pipe Step 12 One of the pipe sections furnished is threaded at one end to accommodate the operating handle assembly. See Figure 16. Install this section of pipe last, with the threads at the lower end. If only one vertical operating-pipe section is required, proceed to Step 15. Figure 16. Threaded vertical operating pipe

Step 13 Mount the rod guide(s) with the arm pointing upward as shown in Figure 17. When an adjustable rod guide is included mount it nearest the switch. Figure 17. Attaching rod guide. Step 14 Install the upper section of vertical operating pipe between the bell-crank and the uppermost rod guide, with the rod-guide arm pointing upward at a 45-degree angle. See Figure 18. (A positioning stud is furnished which holds the rod guide at 45 degrees.) Follow the directions in Installing Pipe Couplings with Piercing Set Screws on page 12. Torque the clamp bolts to final tightness. Then tighten the piercing set screws, piercing the pipe, and continue turning until a firm resistance is felt. If more than one rod guide is used, install vertical operating-pipe sections between the rod guides in the same manner. Positioning stud Uppermost section of vertical operating pipe Figure 18. Installing upper operating pipe section into rod guide

Installing Operating Handle d Step 15 Mount the operating handle assembly as shown on the erection drawing. At the same time, use one of the mounting bolts to attach one end of the ground strap (the end with the grounding connector attached) to the handle mounting plate. f See Figure 19. Grounding strap Figure 19. Mounting operating handle. Step 16 Install the lowest vertical operating-pipe section by threading one end of the pipe into the coupling on the operating handle assembly. Approximately ¹ ₄ inch of thread should extend through the coupling. Tighten the locknut. See Figure 20. Locknut d If suffix -S8 is specified, refer instead to S&C Instruction Sheet , S&C Switch Operators Type AS-10. f The grounding recommendations herein may differ from the standard operating and safety procedures of certain electric utility companies. Where a discrepancy exists, the operating procedures of the electric utility apply. Figure 20. Installing lowest operating pipe section into operating handle assembly

Step 17 Insert the upper end of this pipe section in the lowest rod guide or if only one vertical operating-pipe section is used the bell-crank coupling and, while holding the operating handle at a point approximately 20 degrees from the closed position, torque the rod guide (or bellcrank) coupling clamp bolt. See Figure 21. NOTICE Do not tighten the piercing set screw at the top of the lowest section of vertical operating-pipe until satisfactory operating handle adjustment is attained. Lowest section of vertical operating pipe Figure 21. Installing lowest operating pipe section into rod guide. Step 18 Fasten the free end of the grounding strap to the lowest vertical operating-pipe section a few inches above the operating handle assembly with the U-bolt connector provided for this purpose. See Figure 22. Then connect the lower end of the strap to a suitable earth ground, using the grounding connector provided at that end of the strap. f Grounding strap U-bolt connector f The grounding recommendations herein may differ from the standard operating and safety procedures of certain electric utility companies. Where a discrepancy exists, the operating procedures of the electric utility apply. Figure 22. Attaching grounding strap

Checking Alignment Step 19 Remove the ties holding the switch blades to their stationary main contact assemblies. See Figure 23. Remove the 45-degree positioning stud from each rod guide. See Figure 18 on page 15. Open and close the switch slowly to ensure that no operational difficulties are encountered due to undetected damage in shipping. Ç CAUTION The switch should be opened and closed slowly only when checking for alignment and complete closure. When opening or closing the switch in service, do not slow down or stop part way. Arcing can occur if the switch is partially open or partially closed. Figure 23. Removing tie at stationary main contact assembly. Tie Step 20 Move the operating handle slowly to the closed position. See Figure 24. A definite resistance should be felt at the end of the stroke, indicating that all slack in the operating linkage has been taken up. Figure 24. Verifying slack has been taken up in operating linkage

Step 21 If there is still slack, repeat the procedure in Step 17 but move the operating handle more than 20 degrees in the opening direction before torquing the clamp bolt on the lowest rod guide (or bell-crank) coupling. See Figure 25. Conversely, if considerable force is needed to move the handle to the fully closed position, or if the handle does not swing 180 degrees to the fully open position, loosen the clamp bolt on the lowest rod guide (or bell-crank) coupling, and move the handle to a position less than 20 degrees from the closed position. Then torque the clamp bolt on the lowest rod guide (or bell-crank) coupling. Proper resistance in the operating linkage is essential to ensure positive switch closure. If a key interlock is not used (Standard Minor Modification Suffix -S6 ) proceed to Step 24 on page 21. Clamp bolt Figure 25. Torquing clamp bolt at lowest rod guide (or bell-crank) coupling

Installing Key Interlock Step 22 The interlock group includes a Superior Type B Mk II single- or multiple-key interlock (or equivalent), with zero bolt projection and ³ ₄-inch bolt travel, locking disc, and interlock bracket. If provision only is specified, the interlock is not included. Attach the key interlock to the interlock bracket so that the interlock bolt, when extended, engages a slot in the locking disc on the operating handle. See Figure 26. Locking disc Interlock bolt Figure 26. Attaching key interlock to interlock bracket. Step 23 Block one of the two slots in the locking disc with the blocking screw provided. (The slot to be blocked depends on whether a locked-open or locked-closed arrangement is required.) See Figure 27. NOTICE Key interlocks are intended for proper sequencing of switch operations; they are not intended to provide security. The operating handle assembly includes a locking bar for padlocking the switch in either the open or closed position. Blocking screw Figure 27. Blocking slot in interlock disc

Checking Operation Step 24 Open and close the switch slowly through its full travel. Main contacts fully closed Ç CAUTION The switch should be opened and closed slowly only when checking for alignment and complete closure. When opening or closing the switch in service, do not slow down or stop part way. Arcing can occur if the switch is partially open or partially closed. Check to be sure that the following conditions exist: With the operating handle as far as it will go in the closing direction, all main contacts of the interrupter switch are fully closed with the blades against their blade stops. See Figure 28. Blade stop Blade Figure 28. Checking that main contacts are fully closed. Each switch-pole operating lever should lie against its closed stop. See Figure 29. Switch-pole operating lever Stop bolt Figure 29. Verifying that switch-pole operating lever is within ¹ ₁₆-inch of the closed stop bolt

If none of the switch poles are fully closed, increase the effective length of the vertical operating pipe as follows. Loosen the vertical operating-pipe clamp bolt on the lowest rod guide (or bell-crank) coupling. See Figure 30. Move the operating handle approximately 20 degrees from the closed position and then torque the rod guide (or bell-crank) coupling clamp bolt. Move the operating handle to the fully closed position and recheck for adherence to the conditions described above. Clamp bolt Lowest section of vertical operating pipe Figure 30. Increasing effective length of vertical operating pipe. In the unlikely event that only one or two switch poles are fully closed, loosen the clamp bolt(s) on the interphase pipe coupling(s) at the affected switch-pole operating lever and reposition the pipe coupling to increase or decrease the effective length of the interphase operating pipe. Torque the clamp bolt of each pipe-coupling clamp to final tightness. Tighten the associated piercing set screws, piercing the pipe, and continue turning until a firm resistance is felt. See Figure 31. Clamp bolt Pipe couplings Figure 31. Readjusting interphase pipe

With the operating handle as far as it will go in the opening direction, the switch blades are 90 degrees from the closed position. See Figure 32. In the unlikely event that the above-described conditions are not met, more switch blade travel is required. 90 Figure 32. Checking that switch blades are 90 degrees from closed position. Move the operating handle to its mid-position to take the strain off the operating-pipe linkage and loosen the two bolts that clamp the driving arm of the adjustable bell crank. See Figure 33. Shorten the drive arm of the adjustable bell crank one step (¹ ₈ inch) and retighten the bolts. Shortening the drive arm increases switchblade travel. Then readjust for full operating handle travel as described in Steps 19 and 20 on page 18. Repeat this procedure shortening the driving arm of the adjustable bell crank in one-step increments and readjusting for full operating handle travel until full switch-blade travel is attained. When satisfactory travel adjustment of the operating handle and switch have been attained, torque the bolts on the driving arm of the adjustable bell crank to final tightness. Driving arm Clamp bolts Figure 33. Shortening drive arm of adjustable bell crank. NOTICE After readjusting, be sure to retighten the clamp bolt and piercing set screw on the pipe coupling at the rod guide (or bell-crank) coupling immediately above the operating handle, the clamp bolts and piercing set screws on the interphase pipe couplings, and the clamp bolts on the driven arm of the adjustable bell crank

Step 25 Open and close the switch slowly several times. Opening cam ⁵ ₁₆ maximum Ç CAUTION The switch should be opened and closed slowly only when checking for alignment and complete closure. When opening or closing the switch in service, do not slow down or stop part way. Arcing can occur if the switch is partially open or partially closed. Blade Check the operation of each switch pole. The following conditions must be met: As the blade moves in the closing direction, clearance between the blade opening cam and the interrupter opening lever must be within the limit shown. See Figure 34. Opening lever Figure 34. Blade assembly moving in closing direction. As the blade assembly moves in the closing direction, each blade closing cam must make positive engagement with its respective interrupter closing lever. See Figure 35. Interrupter Closing cam Closing lever Blade Figure 35. Blade assembly moving in closing direction

When the blade is in the fully closed position, each blade closing cam must overlap its respective interrupter closing lever to prevent inadvertent opening of the interrupter, and clearance between the blade closing cam and its respective interrupter closing lever must be within the limit shown. See Figure 36. ¹ ₈ maximum Interrupter Closing cam Closing lever Blade closed Figure 36. Blade assembly in fully closed position. The interrupter must lie in a plane parallel to the sweep of the blades, and the blades must pass over the interrupter with approximately equal clearance on both sides. See Figure 37. If adjustment is required, loosen the nuts that fasten the interrupter to the jaw-contact assembly and shift the interrupter, within the confines of the mounting holes, to achieve the necessary clearances. Retighten the nuts. Interrupter Blade assembly Adjust for equal clearance Figure 37. Blade assembly in fully closed position

With the switch in the fully closed position, verify the minimum clearances between the blade shunt contact and the interrupter, measured to the interrupter housing as well as the interrupter skirts. See Figure 38. Interrupter ³ ₈ minimum shunt contact to interrupter housing Shunt contact Blade closed ¹ ₁₆ minimum shunt contact to interrupter skirts Figure 38. Blade assembly in fully closed position. Move the blade in the opening direction and verify that each blade shunt contact firmly engages its respective interrupter contact rivets before the blade contacts disengage from the stationary main contact assemblies. See Figure 39. The shunt contacts may be bent as required to conform to these conditions. If any of the conditions described in this step cannot be achieved, contact the nearest S&C Sales Office since it is likely that damage was sustained during shipment. Interrupter contact rivets Shunt contact Interrupter Blade closed Figure 39. Blade assembly moving in opening position

Step 26 Attach the danger label to the pole or structure using two straps or bolts (furnished by others). See Figure 40. Position the danger label within three feet of the switch pole-units, and in full view of line crews when viewed from the front of the switch. For switches that mount on two poles, attach another danger label to the second pole in the same manner. Straps (by others) Danger label Figure 40. Attaching danger label to pole or structure. Connecting High-Voltage Conductors When high-voltage conductors are to be connected using aluminum-alloy body connectors f, the following procedures should be employed: Thoroughly wire-brush the currenttransfer surfaces of each connector and immediately apply a liberal coating of Penetrox A (available from Burndy Corporation) to the brushed surfaces. Wire-brush each terminal pad of the switch and apply a coating of Penetrox A. Then bolt the connectors to the terminal pads. Prepare the conductors using established procedures and clamp them in their respective connectors. f Mass anode type connectors, such as the Catalog Number 5300 series offered by S&C, which have been designated by the connector manufacturer as being suitable for direct attachment to copper-bearing alloy terminal pads

OPERATION Opening and Closing the Switch Ç DANGER The interrupters and terminal pads of the Alduti-Rupter Switch may be energized with the interrupters in any position. Before inspecting, servicing, or repairing this switch or working on the conductors on either side of the switch, test for voltage using proper high-voltage test equipment. Then install suitable grounding equipment. Failure to observe these precautions may result in serious injury or death. NOTICE This interrupter switch is not intended for breaking fault currents. Remove the padlock from the locking bar on the operating handle assembly. Withdraw the locking bar. See Figure 41. If the operating handle assembly is furnished with a key interlock, disengage the interlock bolt. Figure 41. Withdrawing locking bar and disengaging key interlock bolt. Rapidly swing the handle to the fully open or fully closed position. See Figure 42. Always check that all three poles are fully open or fully closed. Replace the locking bar and the padlock. Engage the key interlock, if applicable. Ç CAUTION When opening or closing the switch do not slow down or stop part way. Arcing can occur if the switch is partially open or partially closed.
