1 Installation Guide nrgsmart describes the family of distributed network monitoring and management products, from BDFBs, high current and low current secondary panels, as well as Web interface software and data server solutions. nrgsmart allows you to collect performance data on distributed assets and tools to help you efficiently access business critical and actionable information. Telect recognizes the industry need to manage distributed assets more efficiently, get better power performance out of deployed assets, as well as pursue realistic and achievable alternative energy goals. Through nrgsmart, access to data at the equipment level provides the foundation for managing performance of a distributed DC power distribution system. Individual circuit monitoring: measure power at the circuit level. This enables powerful trend analysis and insights into equipment performance and enables preventative maintenance processes. - High accuracy, 100% passive monitoring, modular sensor modules Collect feed voltage, circuit current, and temperature Network Data Collection: Intelligent interpretation of the collected data, based on equipment data signature (smart alarms), drives relevant business decisions. - Hosted Data Services available through the nrgsmart-adh service - SNMP Interface comes standard when used with the nrgcontrol-bt Data Analytics: The nrgbdfb, when used in conjunction with the nrgsmart-adh Service, can be remotely monitored through the nrgsmart web portal and dashboard views. 2 Overview Telect s nrgbdfb 1000A Battery Distribution Fuse Bay includes up to 8 panels per bay with each panel supporting a single feed with a maximum input rating of 1000A. Each panel contains 20 circuit positions for either bullet-style breakers or TFD fuse holders and features -48V operating voltage to fit in legacy and next-gen network applications with advanced circuit level monitoring. The nrgbdfb provides total front access to fuses and LED status. All terminals for outputs, ground, and alarms are on the rear of the panel. Input terminals are loacted on the interior side of the panel. Inputs are studs for dual-hole lugs. Ground terminals are studs for dual-hole lugs. Output studs are for dual-hole lugs. Power/fuse alarm terminals are wire wrap pins. The bullet terminals can accept either TFD fuse holders or bullet terminal breakers. Single pole, double pole, and triple pole breakers are also supported. 4 Installation Please read these instructions carefully and completely before beginning installation. For assistance, contact Technical Support at , or These instructions presume you have verified the Telect equipment being installed is compatible with the rest of the system, including power, ground, circuit protection, signal characteristics, equipment from other vendors, and local codes or ordinances. Inspecting the Shipment Telect Inc. is not liable for shipping damage. Telect is not responsible for any equipment damage or poor operating performance when you do not follow these guidelines or when you use non-certified installers. Keep the container until you have checked equipment operation. If you experience any kind of problem, call Telect s Customer Service Department at Use the original, undamaged container if you are instructed to return the enclosure to Telect. If a shipping container is damaged, keep it for the carrier s inspection. Notify the carrier and call Telect s Customer Service Department at Other than this installation guide, the nrgbdfb frame ships with no other components. Optional concrete and raised floor anchoring kits discussed in this guide are shown on pages 13 and 15. Important Installation Guidelines Elevated Operating Ambient Temperature - If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack asembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the equipment in an environment compatible with the maximum ambient temperature (Tma) specified by the manufacturer. Reduced Air Flow - Installation of the equipment in a rack should be such that the amount of air flow required for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised. Mechanical Loading - Mounting of the equipment in the rack should be such that a hazardous condition is not achieved due to uneven mechanical loading. Circuit Overloading - Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply circuit and that the effect that overloading of circuits might have on over-current protection and supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used when addressing this concern. Reliable Earthing - Reliable earthing of rack-mounted euqipment should be maintained. Particular attention should be given to supply connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit (e.g. use of power strips). NOTE: The nrgbdfb is DC-I, and can be grounded in both CBN and IBN networks. All eight panel feeds have isolated returns, and the chassis grounds are isolated from all returns. The nrgbdfb is suitable for installation in network telecommunication facilities and in locations where the NEC applies.! ALERT ALERT! It is recommended that this product is installed within a restricted access location where access is through the use of a tool, lock and key, or other means of security, and is controlled by the authority responsible for the location. This product must be installed and maintained only by qualified technicians. Verify all connections meet requirements specified in local electric codes or operating company guidelines before supplying power. Unit shall be protected by a listed circuit breaker or branch-rated fuse sufficient to interrupt power levels specified on the preceding page. Only use components and crimping tools approved by agencies or certifying bodies recognized in your country or region, such as Underwriter s Laboratories (UL), TUV, etc. 4

5 Top or Bottom Feed Options The nrgbdfb can be configured for either top or bottom feed installation. For bottom feed, the nrgbdfb must be mounted using the raised floor seismic anchor kit (DR-ANCRF). For top feed installations, either the raised floor seismic anchor kit (DR-ANCRF) or the concrete floor seismic anchor kit (DR-ANCS) can be used. 11 Frame Installation! ALERT ALLERT! Only qualified technicians may install and maintain this product. Verify all connections meet requirements specified in local electric codes or operating company guidelines. Only use components and crimping tools approved by agencies or certifying bodies recognized in your country or region, such as Underwriter s Laboratories (UL), TUV, etc. Installation Considerations Location & Space The nrgbdfb frame requires 28" (71 cm) door clearance at the front and rear. Leave as much side clearance for panel removal and worker access as required by your application or local regulations. If you do not require side access, you can install the nrgbdfb frames with zero side clearance, and you can leave off any adjacent panels for side-by-side nrgbdfb frames needing cross-access. Choose a location in compliance with your local operating company requirements.! ALERT ALLERT! The nrgbdfb frame weighs approximately 650 lbs. (294 kg) for the nrgbdfb, including fully loaded breakers (160 circuits). Use the appropriate lifting equipment. Concrete Floor (51005-ANCS Anchor Kit) Each Telect Anchoring Kit (sold separately) contains an isolation pad, concrete anchors, threaded studs, and fastening hardware to anchor and secure the base of one nrgbdfb frame to a concrete floor. Using the isolation pad as a template, mark the hole patterns, then move the pad aside. Drill a 5/8" (18 mm) diameter hole to the appropriate depth so the anchor will be flush with the concrete surface when installed at each of the four anchor locations. Use a HEPA filter shop vacuum while drilling to prevent concrete dust contamination of adjacent equipment. Install the anchor using the proper setting tool (part number ). Tool should be driven into the anchor until the tool shoulder meets the top of the anchor. Figure X - Mounting Hardware 11

12 Mounting! ALERT ALLERT! If you drill past a reinforcing bar, you MUST use an isolation pad to isolate the nrgbdfb frame from the rebar ground. Telect recommends the use of isolation pads on all nrgbdfb frame installations to protect against inadvertent rebar grounds. Figure X - Isolation Pad for nrgbdfb frame 1. Place the isolation pad over the newly installed anchors. 2. Set nrgbdfb frame in place on the isolation pad. Do not let debris fall into the holes. 3. Place the plate, isolating spacer, flat washer, lock washer and the bolt over each anchor location as shown in Figure X (Mounting Hardware). 4. Torque bolt assembly 22 ft-lbs. 12

13 Raised Floor (DR-ANCRF Anchor Kit) Each Telect Anchoring Kit (sold separately) contains an isolation pad, concrete anchors, threaded rods, and fastening hardware to anchor and secure the base of one nrgbdfb frame to a raised floor and the concrete below it. See Isolation Pad for nrgbdfb Frame on page 13 for a view of the isolation pad. 1. Locate the isolation pad over one raised floor panel. 2. Using the isolation pad as a template, mark the hole patterns, then move the pad aside. 3. Drill a 5/8" (18 mm) diameter hole at each of the four anchor locations. 4. Remove the floor panel, transfer the panel holes to the concrete! ALERT ALLERT! If you drill past a reinforcing bar, you MUST use an isolation pad to isolate the nrgbdfb frame from the rebar ground. Tool should be driven into the anchor until the tool shoulder meets the top of the anchor. Clean out the holes using a HEPA filter shop vacuum and carefully clean away all debris. 7. Place the isolation pad over the newly installed anchors. 8. Set nrgbdfb frame in place on the isolation pad. Do not let debris fall into the holes. 9. Place the plate, isolating spacer, flat washer, lock washer and the bolt over each anchor location. 10. Torque bolt assembly to 22 ft-lbs. 13

15 Grounding! WARNING WARNING! To maintain proper grounding protocol, always ground this nrgbdfb frame to the site master ground return that facilitates the earth ground for the site.! WARNING WARNING! Failure to properly ground this equipment can create hazardous conditions to installation personnel and to the equipment. 1. Route the 4/0 AWG (min.) ground wire in from the isolated chassis ground (use appropriate fittings) to the ground in the nrgbdfb frame (ground lug locations vary). 2. In the nrgbdfb frame, crimp a single-hole compression lug for a 3/8-16 stud onto the ground wire. 3. Thread a 3/8-16 KEPS nut (not provided) on the stud and tighten to ~150 in. lb (~ 17 N m). 4. Place the compression grounding lug over the stud. 5. If desired or required, place a washer on top of the lug. 6. Thread another KEPS nut onto the stud and also tighten to ~150 in. lb. (~17 N m). 3/8-16 tapped holes on 1" centers for larger earthing conductor lug. 1/4-20 threaded holes on 5/8" centers Grounding locations Additional earth grounding point near the bottom of the frame for bottom feed grounding. 15

16 nrgbdp Panel Installation The nrgbdfb can be configured with various panel configurations, typically configured with two panel increments (2, 4, 6, or 8). nrgbdfb s with a subset of panels, up to 8 total, can be upgraded with additional panels as capacity needs increase. There are two steps in identifying the appropriate panel configuration options for retrofitting or installing additional panels to an nrgbdfb. 1. Panel Kit Configuration options 2. Bullet Terminal breakers and TFD fuse holders would not be able to be installed until an nrgbt or BT module was installed. This option would be purchased in conjunction with individual modules to provide a custom configuration with less than 20 circuits configured. 16

19 Installation Steps! WARNING WARNING! Before connecting input power cables, make sure the input power to the nrgbdfb is turned off. For input wiring - wiring used as inputs to the nrgbdp panels: Crimp dual-hole compression lugs onto #1 AWG to 750MCM copper wires. Insulate lug barrels with UL94 V-0-rated heat-shrink tubing. nrgbdp Panel Input Feed Connections Installing the nrgbt Sensors The nrgbt sensor is installed and removed by using the nrgbt- HEX wrench as shown in the Figure X below. The hex wrench locks into the bolt located in the Bullet Terminal port on the sensor. To install the sensor, insert and lock the nrgbt-hex wrench into the sensor Bullet Terminal port. The sensor is locked into place and connected to the backplane terminals as the hex wrench is turned clockwise. To remove the sensor, insert and lock the nrgbt-hex wrench into the sensor Bullet Terminal port and turn counter-clockwise to automatically extract the sensor. 27 nrgcontrol nrgnet Connectivity nrgnet is Telect s proprietary communication link between nrgsmart panels and the nrgcontrol controller. The connection is a single wire with four conductors to provide power and data communication. nrgcontrol WAN Connectivity The nrgcontrol WAN port located on the back of the unit is used to connect the controller to the data storage location options. The controller can be operated in the following modes. 1. Local Only Mode No WAN connection required. The controller will collect data from all panel sensors that are connected to it over the nrgnet interface. No SNMP Traps or Data is sent for monitoring. Data is stored locally on the included SD card. The instantaneous sensor data can be viewed from the front of the controller s LCD screen for all attached monitoring panels. 2. SNMP Mode The WAN port must be connected and configured to operate on the same subnet as the customer defined SNMP/NMS server address. See SNMP Configuration section XXXX The nrgsmart MIB table is available for download at the following URL: SNMP Traps can be setup for any or all of the following: current threshold crossings, breaker trips or blown fuses, voltage threshold crossings, temperature threshold crossings. See section XXXX for setting threshold vlaues for the nrgsmart sensors. Sensor data and configuration data can be polled by issuing MIB commands from teh NMS. The NMS will have to manage and store all collected data. 3. Telect Hosted Data Mode The WAN port must be connected and configured to the nrgetl1.telect.com domain name (Default). The user must purchase the nrgportal-adh data hosting option to register for an nrgportal account and login access to the data visualization tools. The user must accept the Telect Hosted Data Terms and Condistions to send data to the hosted service. The Telect hosted data service manages user portal configuration, site equipment deployment configurations and provides access to data analytic views of collected sensor data over the customer s entire deployed network of nrgsmart panels. Options are available to deploy user managed data servers behind a customer s firewall. Contact your field representative to setup a site survey discussion for server deployment options. 4. SNMP and Telect Hosted Data Mode Both SNMP Traps and Telect Data Hosing can be operated simultaneously. 27

28 nrgcontrol LAN Connectivity TCP/IP LAN connection. 1. Connect a CAT5 cable to the LAN connector of the built-in controller inside the door of the nrgbdfb. 2. The laptop should be setup to receive DHCP addresses. The controller will assign a valid local IP address. 3. Using a web browser, navigate to Chrome is the recommended browser. Other supported browsers include Firefox. 4. The Configuration Wizard will be displayed. For information on connecting and configuring your nrgsmart panels, please refer to Configuration Wizard User Guide. 28

29 Replacing an nrgbdp Panel Within the nrgbdfb Frame! WARNING WARNING! It is critical that all input feeds, to any of the bridged panels, are disconnected. In the process of changing out the nrgbdp panel, it is highly probable that the BATTERY and RETURN will come in contact with each other during the replacement process. 1. Remove breakers and nrgbt sensor modules. To remove the sensor, insert and lock the nrgbt-hex wrench into the sensor Bullet Terminal port and turn counter-clockwise to automatically extract the sensor 2. Remove the alarm card. 29

30 3. Remove the nrggmt sensor module 4. Unplug nrgnet cables from the back of the nrgbdp panel (both top and bottom) 30

31 5. Remove the Bus Bars Unbolt 4-3/8" bolts from the input bus bar located in the front compartment of the nrgbdfb Remove the 4 bolts Unbolt 4-3/8" bolts from the return bus bar located in the back compartment of the nrgbdfb 31

32 6. Remove the return bus bar by: A. Pushing the bus bar next to the glastic back plane B. Pushing the bus bar up toward the glastic spacer C. Rotating the bottom of the bus bar out between the return and equipment studs B The fit is tight, but should easily pass through the studs. NOTE: The nrgbdp design has changed from this revision, facilitating easier installation of bus bars and access to bolts. A C 7. Remove the top two and bottom two 3/8" bolts from the nrgbdp. NOTE: Save the bolts and nuts as they will be used to secure the new nrgbdp panel. 8. Remove the nrgbdp from the nrgbdfb frame by rotating the nrgbdp panel attached return out of the nrgbdfb frame. 32

33 Preparing to Install the New nrgbdp Panel 9. Remove 5-1/4" nuts from the new nrgbdp panel 10. Install the two glastic spacers from the old panel or from the provided kit onto the new panel. The glastic spacer will screw onto the 1/4" studs located on the new nrgbdp panel. 33

34 11. Install panel return and secure the three 1/4" bolts shown. 12. Install the nrgbdp panel with return into the nrgbdfb frame by rotating the nrgbdp panel in to the frame hole from the rear. 13.
