2 Steam traps The main purpose of the steam trap is to hold perfectly steam and discharge the condensate quickly and fully. In addition to these essential features, the steam trap must also discharge air and non-condensable gases. All our steam traps completely satisfy these requirements. Our products range include different models having technical characteristics suitable to meet every kind of requirements or applications. Choice of type B. Choice of size Before discussing these steps, it is necessary to make a general comment from the economic point of view. Giving as granted that the condensate must be discharged, it is highly important not to loos live steam in this process. Assuming that today s cost of steam is approximately 0,02 Euro to a kilogram (and this is very conservative), it follows that a trap, sized for 200 kg/h losing 10% of its steam, in a refinery onstream 24 hours/day, costs in one year 146,00 Euro. If this refinery has steam traps incorrectly sized and, therefore, in such conditions, the loss will be ,00 Euro per year! One can easily calculate what happens if the trap has failed in the open position instead of just losing some steam. The choice of the type and size to a steam trap is a matter of great importance.

4 A. Choice of type The main criteria for the selection of the type are (they cannot be listed in order of importance since it varies from application to application): - Resistance to freezing - Installation versatility - Air venting - Resistance to water hammer - Type of discharge (with temperature regulating control valves, the modulating type is preferable) - Heat Exchange efficiency (traps discharging sub cooled condensate do not allow an efficient heat exchange) - Sensitive to back pressure - Reaction to load changes - Pressure variations (types requiring changes of orifices for different pressure are unfit for wide variations) - Dimension and weight B. Choice of size There are 3 parameters to take into account for a correct sizing: 1. Differential pressure 2. Condensate load to be discharged 3. Safety factor 1 Differential pressure The differential pressure is simply the difference between the pressure upstream and downstream of the trap. When a trap discharges at the atmosphere, the downstream pressure is zero (we always refer to relative and not absolute pressure) and the differential pressure is the same of the line. When there is a condensate return system, there is always some pressure inside it due to friction and line lifting. The best way to know the value of downstream pressure (also called backpressure) is to install a pressure gauge just after the trap. If this is not practical, one should calculate the amount of backpressure by formulas of pressure drop in water ducts adding approx. 0,1 bar for each meter of rise. 2 Condensate load This is the second parameter to be introduced into the capacity tables. For draining of steam mains the quantity of condensate is related to the size of the pipe, to the stream pressure, to the efficiency of thermal insulation, to the outside temperature, to the wind force if any and to the temperature of the line (cold start-up or running conditions). In all the other applications traps are used to drains machines utilizing steam as a heating medium. In these cases the quantity of condensate to be removed will be equal to the amount of steam used by the machines to give the desired performance.

5 3 Safety factor For many reasons the steam trap will not be able to handle on field the condensate loads given in the capacity tables. These reasons are: - Type of discharge (intermittent or continuous) - How the condensate reaches the trap - Presence of large quantities of air - Influence of other traps discharging in the same return line Moreover, there may be incorrect assumptions in the condensate load calculation and it is necessary to take into account at a cold start-up the quantity of condensate to be discharged is a lot more than at running conditions. To summarize, the size of the trap is selected entering the capacity tables with the differential pressure and with the condensate load multiplied by the safety factor. A minimum safety factor 1,2 or 1,5 must be always taken into consideration. Higher safety factors (2 or 4) are required for certain applications. Installation Specific suggestions for a correct installation depend on the application and on the type of selected trap. The following are some general comments: - The trap should always be installed below the drain point. - Try to avoid condensate lifting. If this is necessary, install a check valve just after the trap. - Always install Y type strainer upstream, unless the trap has a built in Y type strainer. - Mechanical and thermodynamic traps should be installed as close as possible to the drain point. - Thermostatic traps should be installed at 1 or 2 mt. from drain point. Do not insulate this cooling leg. - It is advisable to install a check valve upstream of an inverted bucket trap to prevent water seal loss. - A sight glass fitted downstream the trap allows a continuous check of the trap operation. - Always install isolating valves upstream and downstream for maintenance purposes.

As assembled, the steam trap is normally open, allowing discharge of air, non-condensable gases and condensate. When steam enters the trap, the liquid inside the thermostat element vaporizes, forcing valve into seat orifice avoiding discharge of steam. Line pressure raises the disc off the seat allowing complete discharge. When flashing condensate enters the cartridge, flow velocity increases, creating low pressure underneath the disc. Flashing condensate at high velocity strikes the inside wall of the disc chamber and is deflected to the top of the disc causing a pressure buildup. The disc is forced down onto the seat by this pressure imbalance. The trap remains closed as flashed vapour in the control chamber keeps the disc seated. Pressure inside the cap is not lowered until the trapped flash vapour condenses due to body radiation. Condensing steam lowers the pressure above the disc. Disc is then lifted and the cycle repeated.

When condensate flows into the trap, the float rises, allowing condensate to be discharged. Once air and non-condensibles have been evacuated, hot condensate will cause the thermostatic vent to close. Condensate will continue to be discharged as long as condensation occurs. During normal operation, an increase in the load causes the liquid level in the trap to rise. The float then rises and rolls off the seat ring, allowing more condensate to flow out. The float sinks as the condensate load decreases, moving nearer to the seat ring, decreasing the effective size of the orifice and allowing less condensate to discharge. This provides smooth, continuous operation that reacts instantly to load variation while maintaining a water sea over the seat ring to prevent live steam loss.

Always install a Y strainer between the steam separator and the steam trap. OPTIONS Optional insulation jacket OPERATION When the vapor enters the steam separator, a series of baffles change its flow direction several times. During this process, the baffles in the housing collect impinged water droplets that are carried in the system. Gravity allows the accumulated water droplets and other foreign particles to fall to the drain and exit the system through a steam trap. The remaining steam in the system is clean and dry, allowing improved and maintained performance.

As the tank fills with liquid, the float rises to the point where the spring mechanism snaps past the center position. The compressed spring instantly closes the vent valve and opens the pressure supply. This allows pressure into the tank which forces the liquid through the outlet check valve. As the liquid level falls, the float lowers to the point where the spring mechanism snaps past the center position which immediately closes the pressure supply valve and opens the vent valve. The pressure in the tank decreases, allowing liquid to flow through the inlet check valve, repeating the cycle.

This valve allows to keep constant the downstream pressure to upstream pressure changes. When fluid enters the valve, it acts on the plug closing the valve. In order to adjust the downstream pressure it is necessary to act on the adjusting screw clockwise. This causes the moving of the spring, which will open the plug until the required downstream pressure is reached. Each upstream change will be absorbed by the valve stem, while the downstream pressure by the actuator s diaphragm.

In picture 1 the valve is in rest position, no fluid running through it. In picture 2, once the plant is saturated, the pressure of the main line comes to the valve through the pressure tap and the valve connection. It s the moment to adjust the set pressure required for the main line by the regulation screw. In picture 3 the pressure excess valve is working, as the pressure tap of the piping collects a signal higher than the calibration; the valve then opens discharging in the secondary line. When the primary line is back to normal calibration or less, the pressure excess valve closes, waiting for a new rise in pressure.

90 VRV Valvole rompivuoto / Vacuum breaker valves VRV 1 Queste valvole sono state studiate per evitare la formazione di vuoto negli apparecchi ed impianti a vapore di piccolo e medio volume, come scambiatori, batterie ad aria calda, serpentini, tubazioni di distribuzione, ecc. Al primo accenno di formazione di vuoto nell apparecchio a causa della condensazione del vapore, la valvola si apre automaticamente ed immette aria dall ambiente fino a stabilire all interno dell apparecchio la pressione atmosferica; richiude e rimane chiusa con valori di pressione superiori. Può essere applicata sia subito a valle del termoregolatore o delle valvole di alimentazione vapore all utenza, sia fra l utenza e lo scaricatore di condensa (ovvero sulle sommità del corpo dello scaricatore, se di tipo a galleggiante). These valves are designed to prevent vacuum in steam systems and small vessels such as heat exchangers, pipe coils and similar. When steam condensation creates vacuum the valve begins to open allowing air to enter until system pressure reaches atmospheric value; then it closes keeping a higher pressure inside. Use - It s normally used to check visually the passage of the condensate downstream the trap and assess any leakage of steam. It can also be used on pipes for liquids with no full flow. Options - Possibility to have and indicator (ball) inside to show the passing flow. Pressure drops - Low pressure drops. Execution - It can be supplied with threaded GAS-F or flanged UNI PN connections. Prevention - It s possible, using the indicator downstream the trap, to verify its correct operation and, if necessary, act promptly. For this reason, its correct position is downstream the trap in order to verify its correct operation. When the steam trap is the float & thermostatic type, it is recommended to place the indicator next to the trap, having a modulating and non-violent drain, the glasses of the indicator does not suffer from erosion and make more visible the flow. For other types of trap, such as inverted bucket, thermostatic and thermodynamic, it is recommended to place it after about one meter.

The valve closes proportionally at temperature changing when the temperature rises. The temperature regulator consist of a control valve and a thermostat comprising a temperature sensor, a set point adjuster, a capillary tube and a working piston. The temperature regulators operate according to the liquid expansion principle. If the temperature increases at the sensor, this causes a warming and an expansion of the filling liquid at the same time and therefore the valve closes over the working piston. While cooling-off this occurs in the reversed sense. All thermostats are equipped in series with a excess temperature safety device (max. 50 C above adjusted set point).

125 RP01 RE01 Posizionatori pneumatici ed elettropneumatici Pneumatic & electropneumatic positioners Posizionatore applicato su valvola di regolazione Control valve application APPLICAZIONE RP01 e RE01 sono posizionatori a semplice e doppio effetto con segnale in entrata 3 15 PSI o 4 20 ma per il controllo proporzionale di attuatori lineari. Gli apparecchi confrontano il segnale proveniente dall unità regolante con la posizione della leva di feedback collegata all attuatore. La comparazione tra queste due forze genera una pressione di uscita che agisce direttamente sulle camere dell attuatore. APPLICATION The single & double-acting positioners RP01 and RE01 require an input signal of 3 15 PSI or 4 20 Ma for proportional control actuators. The positioner compares the output signal from a controller with the position feedback, and varies a pneumatic output signal to the actuator accordingly. Per regolare la velocità dell attuatore agire sulla vite A (fig. 1). INVERSIONE DELL AZIONE I posizionatori vengono forniti per il funzionamento in azione diretta. Per invertire l azione è sufficiente svitare il tappo dall uscita OUT2 e inserirlo nell uscita OUT1. FUNZIONAMENTO A DOPPIO EFFETTO I posizionatori RP01 e RE01 offrono la possibilità di essere utilizzati sia come posizionatori a semplice effetto, che come posizionatori a doppio effetto. VALVE SPEED ADJUSTMENT With RP01 and RE01 a splitted opening/closing speed adjustment can be made by simply turning a screw. To adjust the actuator speed operate on screw A (fig. 1). REVERSE ACTION The positioners are normally supplied for direct action. In case the reverse action is requie, then remove the plug from OUT2 and put it inside the OUT1. DOUBLE ACTING OPERATION Both RP01 and RE01 units are designed to operate as single or double acting positioners. In this way, they highly improve the control valves operations.
