2 Safety considerations Do not place large and heavy stirring vessels (1) directly onto the magnetic stirrer (3). Observe the instruction relating to maximum load. You must use a suitable stand (accessory). Do not place hot stirring vessels (1) directly on top of the magnetic stirrer (3). Max. surface temperature of magnetic stirrer (3): MOBIL 200 or MOBIL 600: 56 C. MOBIL with center hole: 120 C. When higher medium temperatures are involved, you should provide for suitable insulation between the magnetic stirrer (3) and the stirring vessel (1). Large magnetic stirring bars (2) rotating in an uncontrolled manner can break the stirring vessel (1). Danger of broken glass. Stop the magnetic stirring bar (2) by pressing the START/STOP key (13). In case of repair, the equipment must only be opened by an authorised service agent. Do not use cleaning agents capable of attacking the surface of the magnetic stirrer (3): MOBIL 200 and MOBIL 600: stainless steel surfaces, MOBIL with center hole: aluminium surface, anodised. Do not allow AlNiCo5 type magnetic stirring bars to remain in an alternating magnetic field if they cannot rotate freely. Do not subject the magnetic stirring bar to a strong inverse magnetic field. Do not subject it to strong impact shocks (e.g. by dropping it). This may result in destruction of the magnetic stirring bar. Do not allow the magnetic stirring bar (2) to come to rest in an alternating magnetic field if the bar is unable to rotate. Do not subject the magnetic stirring bar (2) to a strong inverse magnetic field, as this may cause the bar to become demagnetised. INFORMATION The length of the magnetic stirring bar (2) must be smaller than the diameter of the magnetic coupling (tech. specification). Thermo Scientific _

3 Equipment description 3 Equipment description Figure 1 and 2 show the components together with their position numbers (for dimensions, see chapter headed Technical Specifications and Figure 10, p. 24). The magnetic stirring systems MOBIL 200, MOBIL 600 and MOBIL with center hole are available as a strong magnetic stirrer (3) and a separate control unit (5). They are fitted with one stirring point. The control cable (4) connects the magnetic stirrer (3) with the control unit (5) TELEMODUL 40 M or 80 M. The magnetic stirrer (3) is supplied with power and controlled via the control unit (5). It is connected to the mains supply with the power cable (7). A separate control unit (5) ensures a safe low voltage situation at the magnetic stirrer (3). Following a power failure, the magnetic stirring system will come on again automatically. The magnetic drive is fitted into the polished stainless steel housing of the magnetic stirrer (3) MOBILL 200 and MOBIL 600. It is equipped with very strong magnets*. The magnetic field is produced by a high-powered hermetically sealed disc armature. The space around the drive is filled with synthetic resin and closed off inside the housing in a watertight manner. On the magnetic stirring system MOBIL with center hole, the motor drives a ring on which very strong magnets* are seated. The rotating movement of the ring turns the magnetic stirring bar (2). The control unit (5) TELEMODUL 40 M or TELEMODUL 80 M has all the controls necessary for an effective stirring operation: rotation speed control button (11) with digital rotation speed indicator (10), start and quick stop key, adjustable startup time, timed and continuous operation. The power ON/OFF switch for the control unit (5) TELEMODUL 40 M or 80 M is located at the back of the unit. Optionally the control unit (5) can be fitted with an adjustable handle (6). If the magnetic stirring system is mechanically overloaded, the speed is automatically reduced. In this way the permissible rated output is not exceeded. If the drive system or the standing surface become hotter than 75 C, the magnetic stirring system is switched off. This failure condition will be indicated visually. Stirring vessel (1) and magnetic stirring bar (2) do not fall within the scope of delivery. *) Powerful rare earth continuous magnets _ Thermo Scientific

4 Function 4 Function The magnetic stirring systems MOBIL 200, MOBIL 600 and MOBIL with center hole are used for chemical, microbiological, biotechnical, pharmaceutical and medical purposes. They have been designed especially with large stirring volumes in mind. The magnetic stirring system MOBIL with center hole has the following quite specific applications: stirring in round-bottomed flasks, spherical and cylindrical vessels made from non-magnetic material with a bottom drain (with or without heating jacket), stirring in the sump of a heated vacuum destilling column, stirring in level boats close to the bottom drain, preventing solids from being deposited on filter panels. You can stir liquids in various shapes of vessel (e.g. Erlenmeyer flasks, storage flasks). As the rotation speed can be variably adjusted, liquids can be moved both gently as well as vigorously mixed. The rotation speed can be read off the digital rotation speed indicator (10). You can choose between a continuous stirring operation and timed operation. In the case of timed operation, a timer will switch off the magnetic drive at the end of the chosen stirring time. The stirring vessel (1) contains a magnetic stirring bar (2). When the stirring vessel (1) is placed on the stirring point, a rotating magnetic field will move the magnetic stirring bar (2). By choosing the starting time, adjustment to the nominal rotation speed can be delayed. This saves driving power and allows problem-free starting of the stirring process. The START/STOP key (13) facilitates the centering process before stirring starts. In case of a failure condition during stirring, the stirring drive can be stopped immediately (within 2 seconds) _ Thermo Scientific

5 Startup procedure 5 Startup procedure DANGER! Supply voltage and supply frequency must be within the range specified for the control unit (5). DANGER! Magnetism. Magnetic or metallic parts (e.g. data carriers, pacemakers, watches) can be affected by magnetic fields. Keep such parts away from the magnetic stirrer (3) and the magnetic stirring bar (2). The equipment must not be operated in hazardous locations. Permitted ambient conditions: Magnetic stirrer (3): -10 to + 56 C at 100 % humidity. Control unit (5): 0 to + 40 C at max. 80 % humidity. In the case of the magnetic stirrer MOBIL with center hole, stirring vessel (1) surface temperatures up to 120 C are permissible. The magnetic stirrer (3) must not be operated in a water bath. The control unit (5) must not be run in humid rooms, or set up in water splash zones. The control unit (5) must be switched off before connecting or pulling the connector. Switch off control unit (5) using power ON/OFF switch. MOBIL with center hole: Mount the magnetic stirrer (3) into the framework construction for the stirring vessel (1) with the aid of the angle brackets (8). You will find the mounting dimensions in the chapter headed Technical Specifications, page 22. As part of the above work, pass the bottom drain of the stirring vessel (1) through the center hole. You may have to detach the connecting piece plus valve (9), and subsequently reattach it. Thermo Scientific _

5 Startup procedure All types: Check to see that the control unit (5) is switched off. Connect the control cable (4) into the socket at the back of the control unit (5): plug connector into socket and tighten with coupling ring. Connect the control unit (5) into the mains socket with the power cable (7). If an absolutely germ-free environment is called for, the control unit (5) should be located outside the sterile zone. When working in humid rooms or a corrosive environment: locate the control unit (5) in a dry, non-corrosive environment _ Thermo Scientific

6 Stirring operation 6 Stirring operation 6.1 Stirring vessels MOBIL 200 and MOBIL 600: You should use stirring vessels (1) which are circular in shape, and made of glass, nonmagnetic metal or plastic. Wall thicknesses should be of an even thinness. Flat-bottomed glass vessels (not concave) and smooth surfaces improve the running quality of the magnetic stirring bar (2). When stirring larger volumes of liquid, you should use stirring vessels (1) having a relatively small diameter with a thin bottom. Do not place large and heavy stirring vessels (1) directly onto the magnetic stirrer (3). Observe the instruction relating to maximum load. You must use a suitable stand (accessory). MOBIL with center hole: Use round-bottomed flasks, spherical and cylindrical vessels made of glass, which may be fitted with a bottom drain, as stirring vessels (1). They can be used with and without a heating jacket. You may also use vessels made from aluminium or stainless steel with a hollow or level bottom. You can also stir in level boats close to the bottom drain. The stirring vessel (1) is mounted into the framework construction for the stirring vessel (1). 6.2 Magnetic stirring bars Thermo recommends the following magnetic stirring bars: Typ Size (mm) Material Order No. KOMET 90 (Ø x L) 24 x 90 SmCo Twin magnetic stirring bar Magnetic stirring bar with bearing (L x B x H) 90 x 81 x 30 Rührstäbe: KOMET 90 (Ø x H) 146 x 48 Rührstab: KOMET 90 SmCo SmCo Thermo Scientific _

6 Stirring operation INFORMATION The length of the magnetic stirring bar (2) must be smaller than the diameter of the magnetic coupling (tech. specification). INFORMATION Some magnetic stirring bars (2) (especially triangular bars) may have a critical resonance frequency at lower rotation speeds. This may cause the magnetic stirring bar (2) to wander away from the turning center and carry out periodic oscillations. Avoid this rotation speed setting when the problem occurs. Quickly travel through this problem range when adjusting the rotation speed. Thermo has developed a new magnetic stirring bar KOMET 90 (Figure 2). It contains a high-quality super-strong samarium-cobalt magnet. KOMET 90 shows a strong magnetic force. The stronger attraction to the magnetic alternating field provides the stirring bar with very efficient stirring properties. Even if there are greater distances (e.g. in high measuring cylinders) the stirring force will be maintained. The stability of the stirring bar will not be impaired if the vessel has a curved bottom. The strong magnetic coupling in samarium-cobalt magnets will also increase friction. The standard design of the KOMET magnetic stirring bar is therefore unsuitable for stirring liquids containing particulate matter (such as mud) or for stirring in vessels with a rough interior surface. Some of the KOMET stirring bars were specially fitted with a wear-resistant glide ring for use under excruciating circumstances, such as when stirring vessels feature rough plastic or stainless-steel bottoms or if the media to be stirred contain solids (Figure 3). Any risk of demagnetisation by external magnetic fields is completely eliminated. All KOMET series stirring bars can be readily recognized by their two conical ends. Figure 3: Stirring bar KOMET 90 (Order No ). Side view (left) and cross-section through central portion (right) _ Thermo Scientific

6 Stirring operation Figure 4: KOMET stirring bar with glide ring If you are working with stirring vessels having rough plastic or stainless steel surfaces, you should use a twin magnetic stirring bar (suspension not included in scope of delivery). It is equipped with two magnetic stirring bars KOMET 90. The stirring bar is suspended from the top into the stirring vessel and kept away from the bottom (Figure 4). Alternatively, it can be fixed at the bottom of the stirring vessel with the aid of a centring device (centring device not included in scope of delivery). 10 mm 10 mm Figure 5: Twin magnetic stirring bar (left, Order No ). Cross-section through stirring bar suspended from top (centre), or fixed at the bottom of the stirring vessel (right). In addition, a magnetic stirring bar incorporating a bearing can be supplied as an accessory item (Figure 6). It can be kept in place safely inside the stirring vessel. Only use this stirring bar at lower or medium rotation speed. Figure 6: Magnetic stirring bar with bearing (Order No ) Thermo Scientific _

6 Stirring operation To improve the slide characteristics of the magnetic stirring bar, you can place a stirring disc into the stirring vessel (Figure 6). It consists of a flat glass or PTFE disc and a screen. The latter prevents the magnetic stirring bar from escaping in a sideways direction. When using the stirring disc, take care to note that it will not rotate of its own accord. Affix it to the bottom of the vessel, for example. Figure 7: Stirring disc with screen 6.3 Recommended rotation speed ranges We recommend the following rotation speed ranges for various applications: Application Microbiological and biotechnical applications: Aeration of bacteria cultures Growth of bacteria cultures Dissolving nutrient mediums, intense aeration of bacteria cultures Routine laboratory work: Prevent accretion of suspended matter Titration Dissolving solids Improved heat transmission Chemical reactions Speed range (rpm) _ Thermo Scientific

6 Stirring operation 6.4 Stirring Do not place hot stirring vessels (1) directly on top of the magnetic stirrer (3). Max. surface temperature of magnetic stirrer (3): MOBIL 200 or MOBIL 600: 56 C. MOBIL with center hole: 120 C. When higher medium temperatures are involved, you should provide for suitable insulation between the magnetic stirrer (3) and the stirring vessel (1) rotation speed indicator 11 rotation speed control button 12 Check lamp MOTOR 13 START/STOP key 14 startup time check lamp 15 startup time control button 16 continuous operation check lamp 17 stirring time control button 18 stirring time check lamp Figure 8: Control unit TELEMODUL 40 M and 80 M, front view. Fill the stirring vessel (1) only to a level where the stirring motion will not cause it to spill over. Suspend the magnetic stirring bar (2) into the stirring vessel (1). Push the START/STOP key (13). For the MOBIL 200 and MOBIL 600, center the stirring vessel (1) onto the magnetic stirrer (3). Mount the MOBIL with center hole under the stirring vessel (1). Attach it as close as possible to the stirring vessel (1). Pass the bottom drain through the center hole. Use the startup time control button (15) to select the desired run-up time: short run-up times for small stirring volumes, small magnetic stirring bars (2) and mediums resembling water, longer run-up times for large stirring volumes, large magnetic stirring bars (2) and viscous mediums. At the end of the preset start-up time, the startup time check lamp (14) will go out. Use the stirring time control button (17) to select the desired stirring time: Continuous operation: the green continuous operation check lamp (16) will come on, Timed operation: adjustable from 5 to 60 minutes. Thermo Scientific _

6 Stirring operation At the end of the preset stirring time, the stirring time check lamp (18) will go out. Set the desired rotation speed with the rotation speed control button (11). To start the stirring process, push the START/STOP key (13). The magnetic stirring bar (2) will be centered and start rotating slowly. At the end of the startup phase, the magnetic stirring bar (2) will run at the preset rotation speed. The rotation speed is displayed on the digital rotation speed indicator (10). Large magnetic stirring bars (2) rotating in an uncontrolled manner can break the stirring vessel (1). Danger of broken glass. Stop the magnetic stirring bar (2) by pressing the START/STOP key (13). You can use the START/STOP key (13) to bring the magnetic stirring bar (2) to a stop within 2 seconds Tips on stirring If the magnetic stirring bar (2) cannot be centered, or constantly wanders off center: The magnetic retention force is too low. Or the base of the stirring vessel (1) is concave or too thick. Or the distance between the magnetic stirrer (3) and the stirring vessel (1) is too large. Move the stirring vessel (1) a little back and forth and recenter it on the stirring point. Reduce the rotation speed with the rotation speed control button (11), or Use a smaller magnetic stirring bar (2) or one with a larger diameter, or Use a smaller stirring vessel (1) with a thin-walled, flat base, or Reduce the filling level in the stirring vessel (1). If the stirring action is too weak: Use a longer magnetic stirring bar (2) or a stirring vessel (1) with a smaller diameter. Reduce the distance between stirring vessel (1) and magnetic stirrer (3). If you want to interrupt the stirring process: Push the START/STOP key (13). The magnetic stirring bar (2) will be brought to a rapid stop (within 2 seconds). If you want to terminate the stirring process: Switch off the power ON/OFF switch at the back of the control unit (5) _ Thermo Scientific

7 Maintenance and cleaning 7 Maintenance and cleaning DANGER! The magnetic stirrer MOBIL with center hole must not be immersed in water or cleaning solutions. Do not use cleaning agents capable of attacking the surface of the magnetic stirrer (3): MOBIL 200 and MOBIL 600: stainless steel surfaces, MOBIL with center hole: aluminium surface, anodised. The equipment is maintenance-free. Clean the surfaces of the magnetic stirrer (3) at regular intervals. For this purpose you can use water containing a surfactant detergent additive, isopropylalcohol. Switch off the magnetic stirrer (3) using the power ON/OFF switch at the back of the control unit (5). Pull the mains plug. Clean the surfaces of the magnetic stirrer (3). MOBIL 200 and MOBIL 600: Where the surface of the magnetic stirrer MOBIL 200 and MOBIL 600 has become severely soiled, you may clean it using a water jet or a disinfectant solution. In case of repair, the equipment must only be opened by an authorised service agent. In case of necessity to repair the equipment, it should be returned to an authorized servicing agent. The equipment must be clean and free from harmful substances. To avoid transport damages during the shipment, please send the equipment correctly packed in the original packing. Please always enclose the filled out return delivery note. If necessary ask for the return delivery note at Thermo (address: see inside of the cover sheet). When ordering spares, please state equipment type and serial number. You can obtain further technical documents (e.g. circuit diagrams, board data) for your engineers by contacting the address on the inside of the cover sheet. Thermo Scientific _

8 Faulty running 8 Faulty running The magnetic stirring bar (2) will not turn: The control unit (5) 40 M may be underpowered: Use the more powerful control unit (5) 80 M. Or the friction between the magnetic stirring bar (2) and the bottom of the vessel is too great: Use a magnetic stirring bar (2) with a suspension arrangement, a bearing or with a stirring disc, or Use a smaller magnetic stirring bar (2), or Increase the gap between the vessel (1) and the magnetic stirrer (3). In the case of the MOBIL 200 and MOBIL 600, for instance, you can place a glass plate or a non-magnetic metal plate between the stirring vessel (1) and the magnetic stirrer (3). Increase the distance to the stirring vessel (1) when mounting the MOBIL with center hole. Or the viscosity of the medium is too high: Use a smaller magnetic stirring bar (2). Or the sediment is too thick: Add the sediment slowly and in small amounts. Rotation of the magnetic stirring bar (2) is uneven: Some ageing of the magnetic stirring bar in the coarse of time is unavoidable. This may reduce its magnetisation. Remove and replace the magnetic stirring bar with a new one. Or: Use the KOMET series of super-strong magnetic stirring bars offered by Thermo (see chapter 6.2). The standing surface of the magnetic stirrer (3) heats up strongly: Under unfavourable installation conditions and maximum power output, the temperature of the standing surface may be approx. 10 to 30 C above the ambient temperature _ Thermo Scientific

8 Faulty running If the resulting heat transfer to the stirring vessel (1) is to be prevented, you should take the following steps: Operate the magnetic stirring system in the lower rotation speed range. Make sure the installation site for the magnetic stirrer (3) is well ventilated. Place an insulating plate approximately 10 mm thick between the stirring vessel (1) and the standing surface of the magnetic stirrer (3). The rotation speed indicator (10) flashes: The control unit (5) has been operated above its power limit. Reduce the speed using the rotation speed control button (11). The magnetic drive is switched off and the check lamp MOTOR (12) lights up: The magnetic drive has heated to a temperature above 75 C. The excess temperature limiter has switched off the magnetic stirring system. Allow the magnetic stirrer (3) to cool down. Reduce the output performance of the magnetic stirring system (lower rotation speed, smaller stirring volume, less friction). If you are stirring a hot medium: Place an insulating plate between the magnetic stirrer (3) and the stirring vessel (1). Thermo Scientific _

9 Accessories 9 Accessories Stand for the MOBIL 200 (Order No ) magnetic stirrer 19 knurled thumb nut 20 knurled thumb nut 21 hand lever Figure 9: Stand for MOBIL 200 The stand will protect the magnetic stirrer MOBIL 200 when heavy loads are involved. There is sufficient room under the stand to allow a stacker or fork-lift truck to be used. Maximum load: 2500 N, Adjustment: 0-20 mm, Dimensions: (W x D x H) 660 x 600 x 160 mm. The mobile stainless steel frame is fitted with four rollers, two rollers can be set to a fixed position. To adapt the magnetic retention force to the stirring task, the distance between the stirring vessel (1) and the magnetic stirrer (3) can be adjusted: Small gap for large stirring vessels (1) and bigger magnetic stirring bars (2); high power draw. Big gap for small stirring vessels (1) and smaller magnetic stirring bars (2); low power draw. Lower the magnetic stirrer MOBIL 200 (3) into the center of the stand. Use the hand lever (21) to set the required distance. Bring the magnetic stirrer (3) to a horizontal position. Tighten the knurled thumb nut (20) at the side of the hand lever. Tighten the knurled thumb nut (19) on the suspension cage for the magnetic stirrer MOBIL 200 (3). Extension cord (Order No ) 8-pole, control line 3 m in length.
