3 OPERATOR SECTION: INTRODUCTION: The Gason parallelogram presswheels are a tillage implement attachment that offers unsurpassed individual tine ground following capabilities. Guided by the trailing presswheel, the parallelogram presswheels are able to move vertically independently, allowing each the mechanism to follow the ground contours, resulting in superior sowing boot position and consistent seed placement. Some features of the Gason parallelogram include: Parallelogram easily removed for non-seeding work. A range of front shanks Keech female spearpoint, 47 double bolt or AFM male spearpoint. A choice of rear shanks Keech female spearpoint or AFM male spearpoint. Greaseable hardened bushes. Replaceable wheel bearings. Aluminium split rim that allows fitment of a range of tyres, varying in tyre width, profile and construction. Adjustable tyre force. Optional adjustable mudscraper. Optional offset kit. Field experience has shown that a good understanding of the implement and its attachments greatly reduces problems in the field, when operated correctly. Upon initial installation, please ensure the following procedure is followed and the Scaritill manual has been read. Subject to any applicable Federal, State or Territory laws or ordinances which may apply from time to time. Left and right hand: All references in this manual are determined by facing the direction of travel. For warranty provisions please consult your Installation and Warranty Registration document. Disclaimer Trailed wheeled, soil engaging equipment by nature cannot be assured of tracking straight as the machine will always take the least line of resistance. Some factors which can influence the machine from tracking straight include: working on sides of hills, uneven and non-homogeneous ground surfaces (due to topography & history of tillage/other practices), unsymmetrical forces from ground engaging attachments, machine design and combinations of trailing equipment. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure our equipment tracks straight, additional assistance may be required in the form of GPS-controlled wheel or hitch steering to gain more stable tracking. 3

4 INSTALLATION: HYDRAULIC TINE SET-UP: Priming the Hydraulic Circuit: 1. Check the tractor oil reservoir to ensure adequate oil supply. Depending on the size of the implement and breakout required, oil requirements to charge the system may vary from 10 to 45 litres. 2. Ensure that safety glasses are worn. 3. Maintain a close watch on tractor hydraulic oil level on top-up with new oil as required (not aerated oil). Observe closely as too low an oil level may introduce more air into the system. 4. Loosen the last hydraulic hose on the ends of each wing manifold, which connects the manifold and the hydraulic tine cylinder. This will assist in purging all air from the system. 5. Once the implement is ready to be primed, lower so that the implement is resting on the shanks/groundtool and creep forward, lowering the implement further as you go. 6. Continue until tines are at full jump height. 7. Attach the tine hydraulic circuit to a remote port on the tractor. 8. With the tractor in neutral and the handbrake disengaged, begin to introduce hydraulic oil to the system. As the tines begin to return to working position they will pull the tractor backwards. Someone must remain in the tractor at all times. 9. Continue until oil begins to emerge from the loosened fittings. 10. Do not tighten until only oil is present. i.e. no air. 11. Nip up fittings and continue to force oil into the circuit. 12. Continue until tines have returned to their working position. i.e. the cylinders are extended. 13. Increase hydraulic pressure until desired working pressure is reached. See below. If the tines appear to behave erratically during working, further air may need to be bled from the system. For the low breakout circuit (accumulators with 14 bar precharge), the maximum system pressure should not exceed 520 psi. For the high breakout circuit (accumulators with 40 bar precharge), the maximum system pressure should not exceed 1300 psi. Warranty will be void if these pressures are exceeded, and/or accumulator precharge increased. Exceeding these pressures will significantly reduce the number of tines capable of jumping. In conditions where a large number of tines attempt to jump, hydraulic lock-up will occur no tines will move and consequently, damage to either tine or implement will result. Beware of hydraulic hose twisting or fouling when wings are folded. Improved hose routing may be possible on some tines if cylinder is rotated such that the hose port faces to the front. Accumulator & Hydraulic Safety Notes: WARNING All work on the hydraulic connections to the accumulator shall only be carried out by suitably trained staff. Improper installation or handling can lead to serious accidents. Before any work is carried out on hydraulic equipment, the hydraulic system must be de-pressurized. On no account must any welding, soldering or mechanical work be carried out on the accumulator. CAUTION Danger of explosion if welding or soldering is carried out! Danger of bursting if unauthorized mechanical work is carried out on the accumulator. Hydraulic accumulators must only be filled with nitrogen N 2 (oxygen-free), not with oxygen or air. Risk of burns as the accumulator shell can become hot. NOTE: The hydraulic tine tower has an additional wedge that can be fitted to the tine tower to limit the jump height of the tine. The wedge should be fitted to the tine tower if you are using a dual sowing boot, tine mounted presswheel, parallelogram or similarly large attachment so that excessive contact with the frame can be avoided. Wedges and hardware for the tine tower are located in the implement toolbox. 4

5 Following is a table of theoretical values of desired breakout at 710mm underframe clearance (u.f.c.) and the corresponding hydraulic pressure for low and high breakout systems. Accumulator precharge information is recorded on the aluminium identification plate on the gas end of the accumulator. NOTE: As the underframe clearance increases, so does the pressure necessary for maintaining a given breakout. To calculate the pressure required for a specific breakout and underframe clearance. Choose the desired tine breakout and from one of the tables, find the pressure that corresponds with the breakout required at 710 u.f.c. then calculate the pressure required using the formula, ( u. f. c ) pressure For instance, if you are requiring 120lbf breakout at 760mm-u.f.c, from the table the pressure required for lbf breakout is 227psi, Therefore, the pressure should be set at 240psi for 120lbf breakout at 760mm-u.f.c. 14 bar precharge 40 bar precharge Breakout [lbf] at 710mm u.f.c. 6 PARALLELOGRAM SET-UP: 1. Before making any adjustments to the parallelograms read and understand the operating instructions for the implement in your Scaritill Manual, and read and understand the operating instructions for the hydraulic tines. 2. After making the necessary implement and hydraulic tine adjustments, setup the implement to work at the desired depth for fertilizer placement, i.e. front shank, and adjust the master cylinder depth stop until the implement is working at the desired depth. 3. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the retaining pin is located in the correct hole for both the pivot bracket casting and the front shank assembly. For the parallelogram with the spearpoint front shank with female Keech adaptor, the retaining pin should be through the bottom hole of the pivot bracket casting and in the middle hole of the shank as shown in the diagram on the right. For the parallelogram with the spearpoint front shank with male AFM adaptor, the retaining pin should be through the bottom hole of the pivot bracket casting and in the middle hole of the shank as shown in the diagram on the left 6

7 For the parallelogram with the 47 double bolt front shank, the retaining pin should be through the top hole of the pivot bracket casting and in the top hole of the shank as shown below: 4. Set the desired force on the presswheel tyre by changing the positions of the extension springs. Springs may not be required in certain soil types with certain tyre profiles. Moving the spring set rearwards increases the downforce on the tyre. 5. Set the desired seed depth by adjusting the M20 bolt on the rear of the parallelogram. Extending the length of bolt through the plate reduces seed sowing depth. Reducing the length of bolt through the plate increases seed sowing depth. 6. Check again that the implement is working at a consistent depth. 7. Check that there is no interference with the parallelograms from the implement and/or seeder, if fitted, under all conditions. 8. Be aware of the position range of implement frame, tines and seeder throughout undulating working conditions and in transport mode. 7

8 OPERATING: When working with your parallelograms, follow all operating guidelines in the Scaritill Manual and regularly check for: blockages due to mud, stubble, etc. wheels can freely rotate. even tine wear and/or damage. all hardware in place and tight. Be safety conscious during every operation with your machine. Ensure bystanders are not too close or riding on the implement when working, raising or lowering machine. WARNING - If lifting the parallelogram with the optional mudscrapers attached, then be wary of the mudscraper, it may be sharp. Do not lift the parallelogram by the mudscraper or its mount bracket. To avoid possible injury, it is recommended that the parallelogram be lifted by the side arms. STORAGE AND CLEANING: To maximise the life of the implement, it is recommended the basic cleaning and protection of some areas is performed at the end of the working season. If the implement is covered in mud, spray clean with a high-pressure water jet cleaner. Locate implement into storage area, ideally under cover, and reduce hydraulic pressure in circuit, such that the tines will still support the weight of the implement. If the implement is to be stored outside, place covers over all non-metallic components to reduce the effects of weathering. Lightly grease all exposed hydraulic cylinder rods to prevent corrosion. 8

9 MAINTENANCE: For general maintenance information, please refer to the relevant sections as outlined in your Scaritill Manual. Regular maintenance should be carried out to ensure optimum performance and life of your hydraulic tines and parallelograms. (a). (b). (c). (d). (e). Dismantling Tine Assembly: To dismantle the tine assembly, simply remove all pressure from the hydraulic circuit. Once the pressure has been taken off the circuit, the pins retaining the hydraulic cylinder or pivot bracket can be removed safely. Check all pins for wear and replace as required. Greasing Hardened Bushes: Grease weekly or more often in dusty and/or higher usage situations, using any No.2 consistency lithium based, extreme pressure general purpose grease containing 10% weight of molybdenum disulphide, e.g. MOLYBOND TPG Grease. Hard Facing or Replacement of spearpoint adaptor: If the adaptor is worn or damaged to the extent that replacement is necessary, please follow the procedure for the hard facing or replacement procedure in the General Maintenance section in the Scaritill Operators manual. Presswheel Bearings: At the end of each season, check each parallelogram for bearing play and regrease. Procedure to remove the Wheel Assembly from the Rear Subassembly (refer to Rear Subassembly in the Spare Parts Section for diagram and item numbers): 1. Remove the Mudscraper Kit from the Rear Subassembly or Mudscraper Bracket from within the Mudscraper Kit if fitted. 2. Remove Item 15 M16 Nyloc Nut from Item 12 Ø16 Bolt Assembly. 3. Remove Item 12 Ø16 Bolt Assembly from the Rear Subassembly. 4. Remove Item 14 M8 Nyloc Nut from Item 18 Bolt M8 x Remove Item 18 Bolt M8 x 125 and Item 10 Stop Plate from the Rear Subassembly. 6. Remove Item 16 M24 Nyloc Nut from Item 11 Ø24 Bolt Assembly. 7. Remove Item 11 Ø24 Bolt Assembly. 8. Remove Items 8 and 9 Arm Assemblies. 9. Remove Items 7 and 6 Spacers and Nilos Rings. Procedure to remove the Bearings from the Wheel Assembly: 1. Loosen each of Items 6 Nut Lock M12 in turn until they can be removed. 2. Remove Item 7 Screw Set M12 x 65 from the Wheel Assembly. 3. Remove Item 1 Presswheel Tyre from between the Presswheel Rim halves. 4. Remove Items 4 and 5 Spacers. 5. Press Items 3 Bearings from each of the Presswheel Rims. Procedure to rebuild the Wheel Assembly: 1. Press Items 3 Bearings into each of the Presswheel Rims so that the outer face of the bearings is flush with the outer face of the presswheel rim. 2. Fit Items 4 and 5 Spacers into one half of the rim assembly up to the back face of the bearing. 3. Fit Item 1 Presswheel Tyre between the Presswheel Rim halves, ensuring that the tyre is seated correctly. 4. Fit Item 7 Screw Set M12 x 65 and tighten each of Items 6 Nut Lock M12 in turn until the rim is pulled up tight on the tyre. Both bearings should be sitting against the shoulder of Item 5 Spacer, if not, continue to tighten. Procedure to refit the Wheel Assembly to the Rear Subassembly is the reverse procedure to remove the Wheel Assembly from the Rear Subassembly above. Note torque specifications as per Standard Bolt Head Markings and Torque Specification section in the Scaritill Operators Manual bolts with no head markings, tighten as per Metric Grade
