4 City of San Mateo Code of Safe Practice FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Initial date: Revised date: Vacuum Truck (Vac-Con) SAFE PRATICE RULES Questions or comments regarding this Code of Safe Practice should be directed to the Safety Director. 1. Pre-operational equipment (including rental equipment). Be familiar with operator s manual. 2. Examine for worn or frayed hoses and lines. Check valves and hose connections for signs of leakage. 3. When swinging boom, change direction slowly. 4. Only one person operates the boom and one-person signals and assists the operator. 5. When positioning truck to work, be extra cautious of personnel and other equipment. 6. Properly secure all equipment and miscellaneous items before leaving yard or job site. 7. Do not load dump body beyond rated capacity. 8. Be aware of possible load surge when turning or braking. 9. Check to see that tailgate is properly secured after dumping. 10. Use safety stand when working under raised dump body. 11. Keep cab clean. 12. Use hearing protection. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Protection Area Eye Face Hand Head Foot Body PPE Required Wear safety glasses with side shields or goggles. Work gloves. Hardhat. Safety steel or composite toe safety shoes or boots. Proper protective clothing. Page 1 of 2

6 City of San Mateo Code of Safe Practice FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Initial date: Revised date: Working Near Vehicular Traffic Questions or comments regarding this Code of Safe Practice should be directed to the Safety Director. Workers (on foot) exposed to vehicular traffic must wear orange flagging garments. Workers on foot shall not wear any type of headgear that can interfere with hearing back up alarms, warnings, etc. When hazards to workers exist because of vehicular traffic, use traffic controls in conformance with the State s Department of Transportation, Manual of Traffic Control. Additionally, controls such as detours, warning signs, or barricades shall be used when necessary. Flagmen shall be required where the above controls are ineffective. Wherever mobile equipment operation encroaches upon a public thoroughfare, a system of traffic controls must be used. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Protection Area Eye Face Hand Head Foot Body Respiratory Hearing PPE Required Wear safety glasses with side shields or goggles. Work gloves. Hardhat. Safety steel or composite toe safety shoes or boots. Proper highly reflective garment (vest or jacket). N95 dust mask when appropriate. Wear earplugs or earmuffs as necessary.
