Page 1 of 6 Section 1: Equipment Identification and Supplier details Name Mikasa Reversible Plate Compactor MVH-308 Diesel Recommended Use The machine also works well for compacting, flattening and levelling rough ground surface with irregularities. The machine can be used widely for heavy compacting works such as base work as well as finishing work for asphalt paving. Use this machine for compacting earth and sand mixtures, soil, sand or gravel. Do not use this machine for clay or material with high water content. Manufacturer / Importer Mikasa Sangyo Co, Ltd, Japan NZ Importer Youngman Richardson Emergency Contact details Garry Bull (Upper Hutt Hire) Links to safety information 360kg-reversible-plate-compactor-diesel Does this equipment require a daily check or inspection and entry in a log book? No Section 2: Emergency Stop Return the throttle lever to the O (Off) position. Remove Key. Section 3: Hazards Identification Exhaust gases are poisonous. DO NOT run the engine indoors or within a confined space. Always ensure there is adequate ventilation. DANGER: RISK OF FLYING DEBRIS. Always wear eye protection SINGLE OPERATOR ONLY! This machine is designed for control and operation by one attendant (operator) only, who must always stand directly behind the machine when in use. DANGER: RISK OF CRUSH INJURY. Single Operator only. No other person within 1 meter vicinity of Compactor. Review the exclusion zone. DANGER: RISK OF INHALATION OF PARTICULATE DUST. Dry material may generate dust. Wear breathing protection as necessary. Do not allow persons to operate machinery without full and proper instruction in the use of the machine. Do not allow person under 18 year s age to operate the machinery.
Page 2 of 6 Fuel is flammable, especially on hot surfaces. HANDLE WITH CARE! Never refuel while the Engine is running. Never use fuel as a cleaning agent. Do not overfill. Never leave the engine running when unattended. Shut the machine down even if unattended for a short period. Risk of Burns. The equipment, especially the exhaust and engine may become very hot. Do not touch! Operation of the equipment must not be performed by persons under the influence of alcohol, drugs, medications or any chemical substances capable of impairing the abilities of that person. Continuous operation may result in exhaustion or stress to the operator. Take frequent breaks and do not operate if you are feeling tired. Check the battery is fully secured before starting. Carry out a complete inspection of the equipment before starting. Section 4: Noise and Vibration Measured Sound level: 107 db Guaranteed Sound Power Level: 108 db Operators sound pressure level : 93 db OPERATOTS MUST USE HEARING PROTECTION Ear Muffs or plugs must be compliant with AS/NZS 1270:2002 Acoustics Hearing Protectors Class 5. Vibrations a w (m.s -2 ) 6.1 m/s/s: According to the HSE Ready Reckoner Vibration calculator, do not operate the equipment for longer than 60 minutes continuously. Section 5: Work Zone 5.1 Work Zone Control or Isolation Does the work zone require control or isolation? Yes: Isolate work area from the general public. One operator only within 2 x 3 meter work zone.
Page 3 of Precautions for site Do you have a FIRST AID KIT? Do you have a FIRE EXTINGUISHER? Can you make an EMERGENCY CALL? Section 6: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for the operator and persons assisting with loading and unloading. Wear High Visability clothing if you are working with other people on the work site. Breathing mask may be required. Tight fitting gloves recommended. Section 7: Fuel, Power Source and Lubricants Fuel Use Standard Diesel. Store in an approved fuel vessel Oil Use SAE 10W-30 Diesel Grade oil. Section 8: Operation instructions 8.1 Starting Insert the key to the key switch. Open the throttle lever to the idling position. Ensure the Direction Control Lever is in the neutral position. Turn the key to "Run" position. The buzzer starts. After "HA" is displayed on hour tachometer, the display will change immediately to "Cumulative time"
Page 4 of 6 Turn the key to Start and release once the engine fires. If the battery is flat and does not have sufficient power to turn the engine, it is still possible to start the engine using the starter cord. Hold the recoil starter grip, and pull until you feel resistance. Now pull hard to turn the engine. Be careful not to pull too hard, as the starter cord may break. Allow the starter cord to slowly retract into the casing. After the engine has started, warm up the engine at low speed for 2 to 3 minutes. This is especially important in cold weather. 8.2 Operation Once the engine has warmed up, move the throttle lever swiftly to the operating position to correctly engage the centrifugal clutch. The Compactor uses two counter-rotating pendulum axles, where the speed of each axle (and vibration motion) is controlled by the Direction Control Lever. When the Direction control lever is pushed forward, the machine moves forward, when pulled backward, the machine moves backward. At neutral, the machine vibrates staying at the same location. When this machine is used on ground that contains clay, the ground surface tends to stick to the vibrating board, and the machine travel speed decreases. If this happens, check the bottom of the vibrating board to see if there is any clay adhered to the board. 8.3 Compaction Sensor The Compaction sensor (Compas) is a system that uses acceleration sensor to show real-time soil stiffness with LED lights based on the number of compactions done. Note: What is shown by the compaction sensor (Compass) is not the absolute value of the soil stiffness. When using the sensor, always calculate appropriate soil stiffness by conducting plate load test and dynamic load test (FWD), etc. to calibrate the LED lighting level with the actual measurement value.
Page 5 of 6 This compaction sensor improves efficiency of compaction work because it can prevent the area already properly compacted from being compacted more than necessary and to identify the area where more compaction is needed. The sensor also has a function to detect abnormality such as vibration trouble (insufficient vibration frequency), ground trouble (soft soil) and functional issues. Compaction sensing (during compacting): Green LED lights up when the sensor finds that the machine is in normal compaction process. When the revolution goes up, and compaction starts, the yellow LED 1 lights up, and as the compaction proceeds, the number of the lighted LEDs increases from 2 to 8. After the LED light that was calibrated with the measured soil stiffness value lights up, the compaction process completes. Normal compaction (Compaction limit) Compaction limit is reached when all the yellow LEDs from 1 to 8 have lit up and the red LED lights up. At this point, this machine cannot do any further compaction. If higher soil stiffness value is required, a heavier compactor is required. Soft or Unstable Ground Detection Where unstable ground or soft ground (soil containing clay) is encountered ONLY THE RED LED s will illuminate, with no yellow LED illuminated. Further ground work preparation must be undertaken Machine Fault: insufficient vibration The Green light will flash when minimum vibration frequency cannot be achieved (due to low engine revs or a loose drive belt). An alternating red and green light indicates a loose or disconnected sensor wire. Section 8.4 Stopping Move the throttle lever to idle position. Run the engine for 3 to 5 minutes at low speed to allow it to cool down before stopping. Move the throttle lever to the stop position to stop the engine. The buzzer will sound. Switch the key to Stop.
Page 6 of 6 Section 9: Transport When hoisting the Compactor, lift only at the designated lift point. When loading onto the trailer, using the direction control level and throttle to drive the Compactor onto the trailer. Allow the motor to idle, to cool down. Turn off. Secure the Compactor on the trailer. Section 10: Additional Information Always use common sense! It is not possible to cover every conceivable situation you can face when using our equipment. Always exercise care and use your common sense. Avoid all situations which you consider to be beyond your capability. If you still feel uncertain about operating procedures after reading these instructions and the owner s manual, you should consult an expert before continuing.
