3 Qualified Personnel Only The Single Phase Disconnector covered by this publication must be installed, operated and maintained by qualified personnel who are knowledgeable in installation, operation and maintenance of distribution switch equipment along with associated hazards. A qualified personnel is one who is trained and competent in: The skills and techniques necessary to distinguish exposed live parts from non-live parts of electrical equipment. The skills and techniques necessary to determine the proper approach distances corresponding to the voltages to which the qualified person will be exposed. The proper use of the special precautionary techniques, personal protective equipment, insulating and shielding materials, and insulated tools for working on or near exposed energized parts of electrical equipment. Read and keep these instructions Carefully read and understand these instructions before installing, operating and maintaining your ABB Single Phase Disconnector (SLS). For safe operation the appropriate Australian or International Standards should be applied. These instructions should be available for reference wherever SLSs are used. Keep these instructions in a location where you can easily retrieve and refer to them. Proper Application Only The equipment covered by this publication MUST be selected for a specific application within the specified rating shown in Plating name, attached to the contact blade. Notice The instructions covered in this publication are intended only for qualified personnel and do not substitute any adequate training and experience in safety procedures. 4 Inspection, Preparation and Installation Standard SLS series Single Phase Disconnector shipment includes: a Single phase base assembly, a mounting bracket and one kit of fasteners. Inspect disconnector ratings on name plate, attached to contact blade assemblies and ensure the unit is suitable for your application. Remove the above equipments from box and place them into scissor lifts. Step 1. Mounting Bracket Installation Attach mounting bracket to phase base assembly, using provided kit of fasteners ( One M12 Cup-head Bolt, One M12 Spring washer, One M12 Hex Nut). To prevent mounting bracket twisting during opening and closing operation ensure the mounting bracket fits in place properly. 5 Underslung mounting assembly 2 Step 2. Mounting Bracket to Cross Arm Installation Attach mounting bracket to Cross Arm using a M20 Bolt and Nut. Note: Each Standard Single Phase disconnector assembly is completed with mounting bracket to suit 100mm x 100mm crossarms and to ensure a correct operation following timber shrinkage the underside of the mounting bracket have dimples/spikes protruding to bite into the timber. Mounting bracket to suit 150 mm* 150 mm fibreglass crossarm is also available. Do not use mounting bracket with dimples on fiberglass crossarm as it will damage the crossarm. 6 Operation Only qualified personnel should operate, inspect, or maintain a Single phase Disconnector unit. Qualified personnel should wear protective equipment such as rubber gloves, hard hat, safety glasses, flash-clothes, etc., in accordance with established Australian or International safety practices. After attaching the unit to cross arm as described in preceding section, insert the prong of a hookstick in the pull ring attached to contact blades assembly and pull the hookstick to fully open position. Ensure all fasteners are tightened properly, contact blades are set correctly, then repeat open and close the disconnector several times to ensure proper operation. 6 SLS Series Installation, Operation and Maintenance

7 Maintenance Instructions 1. Safety of personnel To establish safe working conditions for maintenance of Single phase disconnector the requirements stated in AS , IEEE Std.C , IEEE Std and other international standards should be complied with. 2. Recommended Maintenance Interval of Outdoor Pole Mounted Single Phase Disconnector Due to the widely varying conditions where Single Phase disconnector products are used it is not possible to provide a general recommendation for maintenance interval and maintenance period could vary greatly depending upon the environmental condition and frequency of operation of unit under normal and fault current. But generally for outdoor pole mounted Single Phase disconnectors where the atmospheric conditions of the site are reasonably clean and the disconnector is not subject to excessive pollution such as industrial or coastal areas and for normal distribution duties (e.g. opened and closed infrequently) the below maintenance intervals are recommended. a. (a) Inspect regularly with a maximum interval of 12 months. b. (b) Typically examine the unit at 5 year intervals but the intervals may vary and it should be based on experience gained from inspection and overhaul. c. (c) Overhaul should only be carried out when and to the extent that inspection, examination or diagnostic testing indicates it to be necessary. However a maximum interval of 15 years may be advisable. Note: The intervals quoted are given as a guide and are based on a three-stage maintenance policy of inspection, examination and overhaul. Where the policy is based on two stages, i.e. inspection and overhaul, the maximum advisable interval between overhauls should be reduced to 10 years. 2.1 Frequent operation or adverse atmospheric conditions For Single phase disconnectors which are frequently operated or situated in adverse atmospheric conditions (Polluted and coastal areas) the intervals between maintenance operations will be less than those stated above. 3. Routine Maintenance 3.1. Inspection of SLS Disconnector A general inspection of the SLS disconnector should be made and attention be given to general cleanliness of the unit. During this inspection, the condition of insulators, contacts and blades should be inspected for any sign of abnormality such as crack on insulators or severe discoloration, burning and pitting of contacts, contact blades and insulator pins Examination and Overhaul of SLS Disconnector Fasteners The switchgear should be inspected and checked for any defects and to ensure that all fasteners, pins and terminal connectors are secured and in good condition. Note: Refer to IEEE Std for detailed procedure of Insulators cleaning Insulators (porcelain or polymer) Insulators should be inspected for any breakage, cracks, burns, or contamination and also to ensure the surface is clean and free from excessive contamination such as salt deposits and road dust to avoid flashover as a result of the accumulation of foreign substances, cracked, broken or chipped insulators should be replaced to prevent flashover and extra consideration should be given to repair or replace any faulty or damaged components. 8 3.2.3 Contacts and other Current-Carrying Components The following recommendations apply to contacts: 1. Contacts should be examined for pitting, burning and misalignment to ensure that the contacts on the units in close position are held with adequate pressure. Badly pitted, burnt, or distorted contacts should be replaced and aligned and contact springs pressure should be checked and adjusted if necessary. It will be expected that the arcing contacts will show some signs of burning or discoloration but this will not cause any problem provided they are not damaged and the parts are in correct operational position. The condition and position of any arc resisting tips should be checked as the primary function of arcing tips are to carry the arc root and excessive burning or erosion of the part could cause problem and should be replaced. 2. Hinge contacts should be examined for any signs of overheating, burning, welding or other visible damage and replaced or repaired as necessary and if such damages on hinge contact. Fixed contacts or contact blades are found the cause should be investigated. 3. Slight discoloration or burning of bare copper or copper-alloy contacts are not a major problem but if necessary could be removed by suitable abrasive cloth or a fine file. The amount of plating and material removed from contacts should be kept to a minimum and if necessary the contacts should be replaced. It is important to maintain spring tension if the contact blades are repaired or replaced for correct operation of the unit. When contact blades are repaired or replaced the below procedure shall be followed to ensure correct pressure and alignment of the components. In SLS series disconnector the constant pressure is maintained by means of stainless steel helical springs and contact force is factory set to a nominal of 200 N. On maintained contacts to obtain the correct contact pressure, the below pre-setting and final setting shall be performed: Notice Do not use any compound containing molybdenum disulphide as a lubricant, since it affects the electrical performance of the unit. Pre-setting: While pressure bolt spacer & stainless steel spring are in place, screw the stainless nylock Self-locking nut on to the bolt until a setting of 22 mm is obtained. Final setting: Using two open ended spanners of the correct size, hold the bolt head and tighten the nut until a final setting of 19 mm is obtained for the jaw contact and 18 mm for the hinge contact Pivot Point and Hinge Pins Contacts pivot point and hinge pins and pivot points should be inspected and lubricated with medium bodied general purpose grease e.g: Valvoline Valplex M or Ampol Jet-Lube Kopr-Kote.
