INTRODUCTION 1.1 General This document is intended to provide the user with necessary information to properly receive, inspect and install G&W s Series I Encapsulated Current Limiting Fuse. These instructions do not intend to cover all situations or contingencies in equipment, procedures or processes. If after reviewing the information contained herein, you should have any questions, please contact your G&W representative or call our customer service number. A qualified person has been trained and is competent: To de-energize, clear and tag circuits and equipment in accordance with established safety procedures To distinguish between live parts from non-live parts of the equipment In the proper use of insulated tools, wears protective equipment such as rubber gloves, hard hat, safety glasses, flash-clothes, etc. in accordance with established safety practices and is trained in the care of such equipment Is certified in rendering first aid, especially in the technique of removing a person in contact with a live circuit and in applying cardiopulmonary respiration. These instructions are intended only for qualified persons, and are not intended as a substitute for adequate training and experience in safety procedures for this type of equipment. 1.3 Shipment Inspection Examine the equipment carefully for any damage that may have occurred in transit. Remove packing as soon as possible after receiving the equipment. Examine the equipment carefully for any hidden damage that may have occurred in transit and was previously undetected. If damage is found, a claim should be filed at once with the transportation company. 1.4 Storage 2

3 Fuses not immediately installed should be kept in a clean, dry location. Insure that fuses are protected from potential physical or environmental damage. SECTION 2 SAFETY INFORMATION & PRECAUTIONS 2.1 Safety Alert Messages The following is important safety information. For safe installation and operation, be sure to read and understand all danger, warning and caution information. The various types of safety alert messages are described below: DANGER DANGER - Indicates an imminently hazardous situation, which if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. - Indicates a potentially hazardous situation, which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. CAUTION CAUTION - Indicates a potentially hazardous situation, which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. May also be used to alert against unsafe practices. 2.2 Following Safety Instructions Carefully read all safety messages in this manual and on your equipment. Keep safety signs in good condition. Replace missing or damaged safety signs. Keep your equipment in proper working condition. Unauthorized modifications to the equipment may impair the function and/or safety and affect equipment life. If you do not understand any part of these safety instructions and need assistance, contact your G&W representative or G&W customer service. CAUTION G&W Series I Encapsulated Current Limiting Fuse is designed to be operated in accordance with normal safe operating procedures. These instructions are not intended to supersede or replace existing safety and operating procedures. Ensure the fuse is rated for the intended application before it is installed. Failure to do so may result in serious damage to the equipment. Fuses should be installed and serviced only by personnel familiar with good safety practice and the handling of hi-voltage electrical equipment. 3

CAUTION Fault Indicators: When using fault-indicating devices on a test point, follow instructions provided with the indicator. 4

5 SECTION 3 DESCRIPTION 3.1 General G&W Series I Encapsulated Fuses are used to limit the system fault currents by use of a current limiting fuse element (conforming to Section 6 of ANSI/IEEE Std. C ). The fuses are provided with ANSI terminal connections (meet requirements of IEEE Standard No. 386) for compatible installation in underground cable systems by using 200A dead break, load break, and elbow inserts. The fuses are ruggedly constructed of electrical grade epoxy. The external semi-conducting coating meets grounded surface requirements of IEEE Std An optional stainless steel bracket can be used to mount the fuse. 6 SECTION 4 INSTALLATION 4.1 NEW FUSE INSTALLATION (Figures 2 and 3 may be used as typical installations using G&W supplied bracket.) A terminal is provided for attaching a ground to the bracket Recheck to make sure that the semi-conducting surface of the fuse is in electrical contact with the Make sure that all existing grounding procedures are followed Mount the G&W fuse bracket using the mounting holes, making sure that necessary clearance (Refer to figure 2 and 3) are maintained (brackets may also be mounted to unistrut systems, vault walls or welded to an existing bracket system). The G&W bracket has provisions for ½ mounting hardware (mounting hardware is not included) Parking stands may be rotated by 90 increments to fit specified configuration Tightly mount the fuse using the two (2), stainless steel mounting straps and supplied hardware. Torque the fasteners to 65 ft-lbs (88 Newton-meter) The fuse must be mounted such that the semi-conducting surface is in electrical contact with the Remove the plastic protective caps from the ANSI terminals Install the dead break or load break inserts and elbows as specified by the cable accessory manufacturer. 4.2 FUSE REPLACEMENT Fuses must be de-energized during maintenance. Visible break and adequate grounding must be provided before work proceeds. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death A terminal is provided for attaching a ground to the bracket Recheck to make sure that the semi-conducting surface of the fuse is in electrical contact with the Make sure that all existing grounding procedures are followed It may not be necessary to remove the mounting bracket when re-fusing. Follow the appropriate steps for the change below De-energize the system using the approved safety procedures Place the elbows on the parking stands Remove the stainless steel mounting straps Remove the fuse that has operated Inspect the new G&W Series I encapsulated Fuse Tightly mount the fuse using the two (2), stainless steel mounting straps and supplied hardware. Torque the fasteners to 65 ft-lbs. (88 Newton-meter) The fuse must be mounted such that the semi-conducting surface is in electrical contact with the Remove the plastic protective caps from the ANSI terminals Install the dead break or load break inserts and elbows as specified by the cable accessory manufacturer. 6

8 4.3 GROUNDING Fuses must be de-energized during maintenance. Visible break and adequate grounding must be provided before work proceeds. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death. Make sure that the fuse is adequately grounded and the semi-conductive surface is in electrical contact with the bracket.
