1 Playscape guidelines for playscape classics, including swings, slides, cableways, roundabouts, see saws, rockers, springies and climbers. Remove hazards, such as broken glass, litter, debris from trees or fouling from the site and from the equipment and ensure pits beneath Dog Grids are free from rubbish and weeds. Completed on: 2 Check that all supports, climbing bars and the take off & landing ramps of cableways are present and secure. 3 Ensure that all fixings are present and secure. Wicksteed equipment uses fastenings with tamper resistant pentagonal button heads. You will have been provided with a special key for tightening these when the equipment was installed. If you need a replacement, contact Wicksteed Playscapes. This should be carried out every week or more frequently if the site is subject to heavy use or vandalism, is located by the coast or is in an area susceptible to atmospheric pollution. The inspection of the equipment should be carried out by a competent person in strict accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. The level of competence required will vary with the task. Check cableway trolley swivel joint fixing to the chains clevis. The grub screw and sellock pin to be checked they are secure on a weekly basis. The grub screw and pin are to be found on the female fixing holding the clevis on the underside of the trolley. On cableways ensure that the correct distance for the stop is maintained. Refer to installation instructions for measurements for specific units. Date Check that all components, including handgrips and swing seats, are present and undamaged. If anything is missing from moving equipment that cannot be replaced immediately, it is likely this could cause a significant hazard. In this event, take immediate action to prevent both use of equipment and public access to the site, until the fault has been rectified. Order the appropriate parts(s), as listed on the product specification sheet from the original manufacturer. (An alternative replacement part may invalidate a product's Kitemark.) 5 Check slides for sharp edges that may cause injury, paying particular attention to plastic sectional 'twister' slides where joints may have been damaged or foreign objects trapped in them. If a fault of this type is found, it should be remedied by your own competent personnel, or the manufacturer should be asked to carry out any necessary repair or replacement. Please turn over
2 continued 6 Inspect climbing ropes to ensure there is no exposed metal and check cableway chains, cables and spring stops for wear or damage. If their condition is in doubt, make a note to order replacement part(s). Check Cableway chain shroud for damage. (Note: the cableway shroud is intended to reduce chain flexibility to prevent a loop being formed that could create a strangulation hazard.) 7 Some equipment, such as see saws of tubular metal construction and roundabouts with metal decks, may have drain holes. Check that these are not blocked. 8 Swing chains should be free from twists, shackle pins fitted securely with a sellock pin and Key Links fitted correctly (see photograph right). Chains should be replaced if wear on links exceeds 0%. 9 Check the tension on Spacenets and other rope climbers. 0 On rockers and spring mobiles, check that the shroud or skirting (where originally fitted) is undamaged and that there are no pinch or crish points. Check Safety Surfacing see Safety Surfacing for guidance In coastal areas, if salt spray is evident on the equipment, recommend steam cleaning. 3 2 Playscape guidelines for playscape classics, including swings, slides, cableways, roundabouts, see saws, rockers, springies and climbers.. Carry out checks to 3 listed under. Completed on: 2 Tighten all fixings. For Wicksteed pentagonal button heads, use the key provided. For all other fixings, use the appropriate hand tool. 3 Check all painted metal surfaces and components for scratches or chipping. Retouch using lead and cadmium free polyester powder paint conforming to EN 7. Supplies are available from Wicksteed Playscapes. It is recommended that equipment is repainted every five years. Ensure timber surfaces are smooth and free from splinters or rough edges which may create abrasion hazards. Sanded down areas, or any other patches where the finish shows minor wear, should be retouched using a Valatti water based stain conforming to BS EN 76. Supplies are available from Wicksteed Playscapes. This should be carried out at least every 3 months. The inspection of the equipment should be carried out by a competent person in strict accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. The level of competence required will vary with the task. 5 Ensure roundabout or rocker Speed Restrictor chains are tensioned. Old Restrictor New Restrictor Adjuster Adjuster 6 Grease roundabout bearings (except the sealed for life type) and clean excessive grease from the top bearing. Greasing point Date 7 Top up roundabout or rocker Speed Restrictor hydraulic reservoirs with the correct fluid. Old Restrictor New Restrictor Hydraulic reservoir Hydraulic reservoir please turn over
4 2 continued 8 With roundabouts, rockers and see saws, check there is no excessive lateral movement and ensure these items, as well as spring mobiles, Rota Web climbers and cableway runners, move freely and quietly. 9 If Orkot bushes are fitted to swings, ensure they rotate freely. Lubricate as necessary with WD 0 or equivalent. Note that Oilite bushes are self lubricating. 0 Check swing seats, roundabout decks and the tubular ring of Rota Web climbers are at the correct height to comply with BS EN 76: ground clearance for swing seats at rest should be between 350mm (00mm for group swings such as Pendulum Swing and swings with tyre seats) and 635mm. See individual swing specifications for recommended heights. The correct clearance for cableway seats is 00mm at the centre of travel under a 30kg load. The underside of a roundabout deck should clear the ground by between 60mm and 0mm and the minimum clearance for Rota Web climbers is 00mm. Single Point Swings, ie pendulum and cantilever swings. The universal joint assembly should be checked by lifting the tyre seat to take the weight and rotating the bearing housing, noting any rough movement vertically and horizontally. If any inconsistencies are found the assembly should be replaced immediately. After 5 years the universal joint should be replaced as a matter of course. 2 Grease bearings on Rota Web and other cone style climbers. 3 Re tension Activity Nets and other rope climbers, by releasing the locking nuts and evenly retightening the rigging screws. Check Safety Surfacing see Safety Surfacing 2 for guidance 5 Survey the rest of your site including asphalt surrounds, undergrowth, shrubbery, trees and pathways for anything which may present a hazard to users of your playground. Make a note of any maintenance work that is necessary and put an action plan in place Wicksteed s can be downloaded from to assist you with your playground inspection record Telephone: Fax: customerservices@wicksteed.co.uk Website:
5 Playscape Independent Annual 3 Playscape Independent Annual guidelines for playscape classics, including swings, slides, cableways, roundabouts, see-saws, rockers, springies and climbers.. The inspection includes checking for missing fixings andor parts, worn andor corroded parts and compliance with BS EN Parts and accessories that are additional to the original installation and replacement components are checked to ensure compliance with BS EN 76. A major inspection should be carried out at least once a year. 3 Repairs that have been made are checked to ensure that the correct level of safety has been maintained and that the appropriate certification and manufacturer s guarantees are therefore still valid. All equipment is checked for the effects of weathering. If repainting is recommended for metal equipment, use lead and cadmium-free polyester powder paint conforming to EN 7. Supplies are available from Wicksteed Playscapes. I t is important that timber equipment be protected from the ingress of moisture, using a Valatti water-based stain conforming to BS EN 76. Supplies are available from Wicksteed Playscapes. In coastal areas, if salt spray is evident on the equipment, recommend steam cleaning. 2 Check Safety Surfacing - see Safety Surfacing Independent Annual 3 for guidance. According to BS EN 76 Part, this should be conducted by a competent person. Ideally this should be a qualified inspector. Wicksteed s, Risk Assessment and, if required, DDA Audit services are at your disposal. This is a non-dismantling inspection, but a list of recommendations, including a grading of the severity of any potential risks, is produced for your guidance. To assist you in keeping full and accurate records, space is provided below for you to note recommendations for remedial work that are made following an Annual and to confirm that each task has been attended to.
