3 Standard NH Series Gearbox Design and Construction General The NH series of Gamesa Gearbox are the result of many years experience in the construction of modern heavy-duty gearboxes. The design and construction of these gearboxes is of proven quality and reflects the state of the art in drive technology. These gearboxes are manufactured with the aid of the latest available machine tools. All stages of production are continuously monitored with a view to ensuring optimal quality as well as low noise operation and high levels of efficiency. Prior to delivery every gearbox is operated for several hours and subjected to stringent acceptance tests. The various gear ratios, main dimensions and sizes are standardised: this is essential for economic production and storage. Housings The torsionally rigid housings with substantial internal ribs are made from fabricated steel. They are designed to minimise vibrations, and ensure that all operational forces are reliably absorbed. No oil can escape nor can any dust or moisture enter the housing. The gearing, the bearings and the oil supply system can be easily checked through a large inspection aperture. Special models consisting of nodular cast iron, or cast steel can be supplied if required. Gear-wheels All gear-wheels are made from highly wear-resistant case-hardened and ground alloy steels, and have profile-corrected involute helical gear teeth in accordance with the latest scientific trends and manufacturing processes. Bevel wheels have casehardened and lapped profile-corrected spiral gearing. The high load carrying capacity of the gears allows for a compact and weight saving design of the gearboxes. Bearings and shafts All shafts are supported by conservatively dimensioned high-precision roller bearings. The bearings match the high performance characteristics of the gearboxes in general. The bearing seats, sealing points and gear-wheel seats on the shafts are ground. The free shaft ends are provided with a threaded centre bore as specified in DIN 332. Capacity and efficiency The listed capacities presuppose smooth operation for not more than 10 hours a day. The starting torque may be twice as high as the listed capacity. However, when deciding on the size of a gearbox, the service factors corresponding to the given application must be taken into account. This is illustrated by the example on page 5. The capacities can be calculated by linear conversion provided that they are within the range of listed driving speeds. The efficiency depends on the number of gear stages. The following percentages apply: 99.0% with single-stage spur gearboxes 98.0% with two-stage spur gearboxes 97.5% with three-stage spur gearboxes 97.0 % with four-stage spur gearboxes 97.5% with two-stage bevel and spur gearboxes 97.0% with three-stage bevel and spur gearboxes 96.5% with four-stage bevel and spur gearboxes Lubrication The bearings and gears are supplied with oil by splash lubrication or, additionally, with the aid of a gear pump. The pump may be attached to the housing or separate from the gearboxes and driven by an electric motor. With standard designs the base of the gearbox also serves as an oil sump. 3

4 Standard NH Series Gearbox Design and Construction Cooling Within certain capacity ranges such heat as is generated during general use can be dissipated via the housing surface. If the maximum thermal capacity of a gearbox is exceeded additional cooling has to be provided. This can be achieved with the aid of an external fan mounted on the input shaft or by cooling the lubricating oil by means of a built-in cooler or separate filter oil cooler. It is also possible to combine an external fan and a built-in cooler if this is necessary under the given operating conditions. The specified maximum thermal capacity values were determined with a gearboxes temperature of 100 C and an ambient or coolant temperature of 20 C. Monitoring operation Gearboxes equipped for forced oil lubrication and with oil filter coolers have ordinary pressure gauges or contact pressure gauges and thermometers enabling operating personnel to monitor their operational state. As regards gearboxes for non-supervised operation additional instruments are required which if a fault develops trigger optical or acoustic signals with the aid of electric contacts or stop the plant via auxiliary circuits. In such cases we recommend the installation of the following additional instruments: Flow monitor, pressure switch, contact thermometer, and temperature sensor for all bearings. Back stop mechanisms Gearboxes for applications in which reverse operation of the machine is not permissible are equipped with back stop mechanisms, attached to the housing or built in. These mechanisms do not require any maintenance. Enquiries or orders should state the required direction of gear rotation and holding torque. Flat and v-belt pulleys, gear wheels and sprockets The bearings enable flat and V-belt pulleys, gearwheels and sprockets of appropriate dimensions to be mounted on the input and output shafts. In order to enable us to judge the need of reinforcing the bearings please state in your enquiry or order: a) The type of component is to be mounted on the stub end of the shaft. b) The maximum outer diameter of the pulleys and/ or sprockets and the distance between the centre distance between the driving and driven shafts. Scope of delivery The gearboxes are despatched in a fully assembled state but without oil. In most cases they are not packaged but bolted to pallets or support frames. Accessories such as oil line fittings and components of the external oil supply system are packed separately, in order to prevent damage during transit. On the inside the housings are coated with oil and impact-proof lacquer. The standard external coating is proof against weak acids and alkalis as well as oils and solvents. The colour of the external coating is in accordance with RAL9005 or RAL9017. The inner protective coating is sufficient for a normal shipping and storage period of 6 months. This does not apply if the gearboxes are stored in an acid atmosphere. In this regard we refer customers to the assembly, maintenance and lubrication instructions supplied with every GAMESA GEARBOX 4

47 Range of products Apart from the standard series of gearboxes described in this catalogue, Gamesa Gearbox manufactures a wide variety of gearbox types which cover almost every application. Below are examples of some of the types from our wide range of products. Single and multi-stage spur gearboxes with helical gearing systems Beyond the standard gear programme exists a wide range of gearboxes with helical, double helical or herringbone tooth systems, with self-hardening, nitrided or case-hardened gears, up to 150 tonnes unit weight. Coaxial spur gearboxes with helical gearing systems For very high transmission torques and compact design for mill drives in the cement industry, steel rolling mills, etc., up to 150 tonnes unit weight. Multi-engine spur gearboxes with helical gearing systems For very high transmission torques, for example double and multiple gearboxes, for tubular mill drives, converters, etc., up to 150 tonnes unit weight. Rubber and plastic mixer gearboxes Transmission torques up to 1,000 knm for calender roll, roller mill and extrusion equipment drives, etc. Rolling mill gearboxes With or without incorporated pinion stands up to 1,000 knm. Marine gearboxes Single and multi-stage, with or without multiple disk clutches, hydraulic couplings with electromagnetic slide etc., and power outputs up to 40,000 HP. Special executions for reverse gears. Bevel gearboxes with helical gearing system With Klingelnberg or Gleason gearing systems, with or without built in thrust bearing (up to 80 tonne axial load), horizontal or vertical output shafts for the widest possible range of installation conditions: vertical mills, pumps, agitators, etc. Shaft mounted gearboxes (hollow input shaft) For paper machinery drives, roller bed drives, elevating installations, etc., for torques up to approximately 150 knm. Vertical spur gearboxes with helical gearing system Free standing type, up to approx. 3,500 kw drive power, for ventilators, pumps, agitating mechanisms, etc. Turbo gearboxes With journal bearings and exchangeable bearing shells, for high speeds, horizontal or vertical type, with circumferential speeds of more than 100 m/sec., for turbines, compressors, pumps, etc. Speed changing gearboxes Shiftable at standstill and under load, with and without remote-control in a wide range of types. Coaxial spur gearboxes Two or three stages available in different configurations. Engine flange gearboxes With spur and helicoidal gears, of two or three stages and horizontal or vertical installation. Curved tooth couplings The curved-tooth coupling is particularly suitable for linking the drive unit, the gearbox and the driven machine. This Gamesa Gearbox invention has proved its worth for several decades, particularly in applications in which shaft displacements are likely or unavoidable. Its flexibility in all directions protects the shaft bearings on either side against axial and radial forces. As a result, the safety and life of the entire drive system are increased. Curved tooth couplings are made for shafts with diameters ranging from 12 to 1200 mm. 47
