Edition 5 Vol. 53 from the president The snow what little there was down here on the plains is gone. The mountain passes will be open soon. It is time to take your favorite Porsche ride and head to the hills! That also means that it is rally and tour time. We have our Spring Tour scheduled for June 25 (see page 16). I know that is summer and not spring, but after having it snowed out a few times, we finally figured out that maybe June is a better time to have it. It has just been the Spring Tour on the calendar for so many years that no one was willing to change the name. It takes a lot of workers to run a tour, so be sure to sign up when the announcement comes out. No experience is necessary to work a checkpoint. Don t know what a checkpoint is? No problem, there are many experienced workers who will teach you the ropes. Pat and I have decided that it is easier on our relationship if we work a checkpoint instead of driving the rally. Driving is fun, but it does test a relationship! It also helps to able to follow directions. I know most Porsche owners aren t in that category, but give it a try for once. You never know where it might take you. If you want to show off your car, the Concours d Elegance at Arapahoe Community College on June 12 (see page 8) is your opportunity. If you think your car is really clean, have it judged at the concours. The judges are trained to find dirt in places that you didn t know existed or even cared about. This is RMR s premier charity event, benefiting Cerebral Palsy of Colorado. Register your car and show it off to several thousand visitors at the event. And you benefit a good cause. This year, let s get a record number of Porsches there! Surely there are more Rex Heck, President Porsche than Corvette enthusiasts in Colorado. If we have 100 Porsches entered to be judged by May 12th, I will clean up my car and bring it. Because I live on a dirt road, I have never entered it in a concours. I have an excellent chance of winning the low score of the day. That is a not-tooveiled challenge to come out and have a fun day! Although I usually don t tout other regions events, this month I am going to make two exceptions... On the weekend of May 14 and 15, AMR, our sister region to the south, will be hosting a DE at La Junta. La Junta is a fun little track that can challenge novice and experienced drivers alike. The La Junta course is short, with only seven turns. The shortness of the track allows for more laps per run session, giving novice drivers the repetition to develop driving skills and experienced drivers the opportunity to do some fine-tuning on both the car and their skills. And to top it off, La Junta is a friendly little town. The second event is Fiesta New Mexico 2011, in Santa Fe on Memorial Day weekend. (For reasons a lawyer can better explain, the Roadrunner Region has changed the name from Fiesta del Porsche. ) The event is returning to Santa Fe after a few years in Albuquerque. The Roadrunner Region has an exciting weekend planned. There are tours, dinners, a unique gimmick rally and competitions. And, of course, time to explore beautiful Santa Fe. Go to for more details and to register. RMR will continue to have a variety of high-speed driving events, socials, charity activities and some just-plainfun gatherings. OK, everyone, get out and enjoy your Porsche this summer! With the variety of events, there is no excuse to stay home. Not a member yet? The evening will begin at 6:30 with cocktails and hors d oeuvres, which will be catered by Prestige Imports, Inc. The entire shop will be open for all to see the latest body shop equipment that Prestige has acquired and which has allowed them to become a certified body shop for Porsche, Audi and Mercedes. Prestige will have many of the newest 2011-model Porsches parked on the grounds and in the shop not for repair, but for all of us Porschephiles to drool over. Since parking at the shop is somewhat tenuous, there will be a free valet available to park your car. Around 7:30, as usual, we will have a short membership meeting to provide announcements for everyone, after which Prestige will have a short presentation from, hopefully, a PCNA representative or, at least, members of the Prestige staff will talk about the new innovations in the body shop and with 2011 Porsche cars in general. There will be a raffle using your business cards, so please be sure to bring some along! Join us for this exciting meeting! board of directors President Rex Heck president@rmr... 5 runoff area It has often been said that the job of newsletter editor is one of the hardest in the PCA. I will add (now that I ve scared away any potential future editors) that I don t know whether or not that s true, but I m pretty sure it s one of the most rewarding. I must take a moment to express how impressed I am with the quality of content coming my way. And, for the first time since I became the editor of this magazine, I actually have more than a month s worth of feature stories waiting in the wings! Also on its way is an article that I think will be relatively unique among club newsletters, so stay tuned. To those others who have submitted stories yet to be published, thank you for your contributions! All of the submissions I ve received to date have been great, and I m looking forward to sharing all of them with the rest of our readers. And finally, if you ve been thinking about submitting something, what are you waiting for? This month s issue continues what will hopefully be a long string of member-submitted feature stories. This time, jet-setter Steve Wright (both he and his wife Janet are airline pilots) takes us on a brief tour of Porsche s new factory museum in Stuttgart. Some among us, like Steve, have been fortunate enough to see the historic museum exhibits firsthand. Most of the rest of us have probably seen a lot of photos by now, but I continue to be get involved RMR Online Discussion Groups Would you like to discuss Porsches, RMR or anything else of interest to other Porschephiles? Jeremy Rosenberger, Editor impressed by the quality of the displays as well as, of course, their historical significance. I hope to visit there myself one day soon. In the meantime, read about Steve s visit on page 12. While most of our feature articles consist of the written word, I know there are a number of photographers out there who may prefer to communicate in pictures. Don t let all those great photos collect virtual dust just sitting on your hard drive how about putting together a photo essay? And if you re looking for a way to keep your skills sharp, or maybe just to do something a little different than the usual, consider coming out to shoot an event. Driver Education and autocross events are particularly exciting and rewarding to photograph, but the truth is that we can t get enough of any sort of event photos! Or, if you just can t wait to share your pictures, consider posting them to our Facebook group (the URL appears below). Talk to an event chair or board member to register your interest in event photography, and get ready to see your work in print. Of course, High Gear wouldn t be able to bring you all this great content each month if it weren t for our advertisers. So I d like to take a moment to thank all of them for their support. 6 membership musings Ahh... springtime in the Rockies! 70 degrees one day snow on the ground the next. Gotta love it! Great turnout at the April membership social. Could it have been the karting after the meeting? Of course there were several Ricky Bobby types at the first DE event of the driving season, Speed Fever II. Also, thank you everyone for your donations of gently-used clothing and other donations for ARC. Well, the Porsche club events keep happening. Why not join our AMR friends at their DE in La Junta on May 14 and 15 (see page 10)? AMR will also have an Autocross on Sunday, May 8 at the PPIR parking lot (opposite page), and RMR has an Autocross school and Autocross on May 21 and 22 at Front Range Airport (page 6). The May membership social will be on Thursday, May 5 at Prestige Imports Body Shop (page 2). On Saturday, May 7, RMR will hold a Tech Session at Adam s Polishes in Boulder (opposite page, again). If touring is your thing, then join AMR on their Sand Dunes Tour, May 21 and 22. You can drive on down to Santa Fe for Roadrunner Region s Fiesta New Mexico on May 26 through May 29. 7 Porsche Handling? Autocross? Let s face it many Porsche owners have never truly felt how their vehicle handles at its limits, and take for granted that it handles well from others who exploit their vehicle s capabilities on the track and at autocrosses. If you have only read about Porsche s handling or heard about it from others in the club, it is now time to finally experience it for yourself all that engineering and R&D was not put into these vehicles for nothing! Do yourself and your vehicle a favor and come out and test your driving skills at the first autocross of the year. It s a lot of fun, and the skills you learn can literally save lives during emergency maneuvers to avoid wildlife, other vehicles, children running across the street, etc. Open to non-porsches (but the only SUV allowed will be the Cayenne), so we can all enjoy some friendly competition. I expect to have many non-porsches there in search of bragging rights, so this is a call for all experienced drivers to come out and defend the Porsche brand! No autocross experience required. You can register at When: Sunday, May 8, 2011 Where: Pikes Peak International Raceway, Midway Ranch Road (I-25 Exit 122), Fountain, CO Cost: $40 for PCA members, $50 for non-pca members Doug Bartlett pcaalpine.motorsportreg.com. 8 autocross school and spring autocross 2011 Autocross School and Autocross Front Range Airport Saturday, May 21 - Autocross School Sunday, May 22 - Autocross Mark your calendars for this fun, early-porsche-driving-season event. Both the autocross school and the autocross will be held at the Front Range Airport, where there is plenty of room to set up a long course with a lot of interesting autocross features. Twists, turns and slaloms all await you on Sunday to challenge your driving skills and capture those all-important Challenge Series points early in the season. If you are new to the club, new to your Porsche (or other favorite fourwheeled means of transport) and want to improve your driving technique or simply want to enjoy your Porsche, we encourage you to register for the Event Schedule 6 Doug Bartlett Autocross School - Saturday 7:00-9:00 Course Setup 7:30-9:15 Registration/Check-in 9:00-9:30 Instructor Meeting 9:00-9:30 Top Tech 9:30-10:00 Drivers Meeting (Mandatory) 10:00-11:30 First Exercise Session 11:30-12:00 Lunch Break (No Concessions) 12:00-1:30 Second Exercise Session 1:30-3:00 Third Exercise Session 3:00 Beer:30 3:00-5:00 Full Autocross Setup (Volunteers Needed) Autocross - Sunday 7:00-8:30 Complete Autocross Setup (Volunteers Needed) 7:30-9:00 Registration/Check-in/Course Walking 9:15-9:45 Drivers Meeting (Mandatory) 9:45 Corner Workers Out (Group B) 10:00 Group A - First Car on Course 12:00 Lunch Break (No Concessions) 12:45 Corner Workers Out (Group A) 1:00 Group B - First Car on Course 3:00 Course Tear Down 3:00 Beer:30 Top Tech to be held prior to the start of each run group on Sunday Autocross School on May 21 and the full Autocross event on May 22. Autocross is a performance driving experience conducted in a safe environment at relatively low speeds. You will not hurt your car and, more importantly, you will not hurt yourself. (Although some participants have complained about strained smile muscles after spending a day with our experienced instructors!) What will happen is that you will gain additional confidence in your driving ability; learn the limits of your car s braking capabilities; practice correct seating, hand, feet and vision positions; as well as push (and perhaps exceed) the limits of your tires adhesion capabilities. The technical word is gription. Each autocross has a unique course design and undoubtedly provides you with a fun driving experience. Last, but not least, autocrossing is a social event and a great time to meet new club members and visit with friends. Autocross School Our excellent club instructors will work with you by providing plenty of driving time through three car-control exercises. Learn about car balance through two slalom courses and practice throttle-steering around two skidpads, including a fun figure-eight exercise. (Not to worry this is not your local dirt track figure eight racing only one car at a time during this exercise!) And finally, on the mini-autocross course, you will learn the layout of an autocross course and practice looking ahead (eyes up) to smooth out the course and improve your times. Autocross We used the Front Range Airport facility last fall for the first time and received rave reviews from the 50-plus autocrossers (or is it autocrossphiles? Neither one spell-checks, but you get the idea.) Run times were around a minute and a half which is a long time to hold your breath if you haven t attended the school to learn how to breathe! This event is a great chance to try out your newfound skills from the school or to come out and compete for your Challenge Series points. Details Registration opens April 4 and closes May 18. Click the RMR Event Registration link on the club Web site, rmr.pca.org. The event is also open to licensed 16- and 17-year-olds. RMR Junior Participation forms and instructions can be found under the Forms tab of the club s Web site. Please read them carefully! The Autocross School is limited to 65 participants. Please register early to assure your spot. Walk-ups will be accepted for both days on space-available basis. Cash and check payments only (we can t accept credit cards on-site). Pre-registration for both events is appreciated, as it allows us to plan for Beer:30 as well to organize the event and obtain volunteers. A Porsche is not required, but only SUV s with a Cayenne badge are per-

Saturday, May 21 - Sunday, May 22 mitted, and no pickups. Convertibles are OK. Restrooms are available on-site; however no concessions are available nor are any nearby. Please remember to bring your own lunch and non-alcoholic drinks during the day. Refreshments will be served at the end of each day, as well as coffee and rolls each morning. This is the last RMR event for you to use your Snell 2000-rated helmet. The club has several loaner helmets available. Registration costs are as follows: Autocross School, $45.00; Autocross, $35.00; both events, $ Directions to Front Range Airport Caution: Do not use dot com maps or GPS using the airport s address! These services will take you to the terminal only, not to the site of the event. I-70 East to Manila Road, Exit 299 (County Road 28) Turn left (north) on Manila Road to Highway 36 (Colfax Ave) Continue north on Manila Road over the railroad tracks and make the first right through the gates Follow the road east and then north to the autocross location Other Information If you can volunteer to assist in setting up the course and other activities to make this a successful event, please call Event Chair Chris Sulley at , or send an to cjsulley@comcast.net. 7

exotic sports car show and concours d elegance article by Al Woodward, RMR/PCA Ambassador to CPCO/2011 Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d Elegance 28th Annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d Elegance Sunday, June 12, 2011 Rain Date: Sunday, August 12, 2011 Arapahoe Community College 5900 S. Santa Fe Drive Littleton, Colorado A Benefit for United Cerebral Palsy of Colorado (CPCO) The Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d Elegance is one of the largest gatherings of priceless automobiles in Colorado. The event was founded by RMR/PCA in Last year s event saw 54 Porsches and more than 20 Porsche 356 s on the show field. The 2010 event raised $100,000 for the Kids of Cerebral Palsy of Colorado (with a very low 13% expense ratio). The Chairman of the 2011 Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d Elegance is again RMR s own Tom Scott. RMR/PCA, with more than 200 members, should easily be able to increase our participation in Anyone for 100 Porsches on the show field come June 12th? We expect that more than 450 treasured cars from early classics and collector cars to vintage race cars and current models will be on display. Many of these incredible cars come out only once a year for this show, to help the more than 800 (with another 750 wait-listed!) Cerebral Palsy children. Nearly 150 local and regional car clubs, businesses and media sponsors draw close to 15,000 spectators to generate funds for United Cerebral Palsy of Colorado. Now in its 28th year, the Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d Elegance has become one of the grandest, most entertaining and most anticipated car shows in Colorado! To date, this spectacular event has raised over $1,000,000 for United Cerebral Palsy of Colorado s Creative Options Early Education Centers. These five centers provide early care, intervention, prevention, support and 8 education services to expectant mothers and infants, toddlers and pre-school children and their families each year. The 2011 Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d Elegance is also a premier opportunity for corporate sponsors to experience tremendous exposure for their companies. This prestigious show reaches a well-educated and influential audience of car collectors and enthusiasts, as well as the general public. The kids win and the corporate sponsors win. Please be a part of it contact Liz Neafus-Stenzel, CPCO Director of Public Relations, at lizns@cpco.org for more information. There are four ways that RMR members can support fundraising for RMR s major charitable effort of the year: 1) Bring your special cars out to be judged or displayed. You can register directly using the Cerebral Palsy of Colorado Web site at /concours and click on Special Events, then Exotic Sports Car Show, and then retrieve the form to register your car on the following page. (This is an RMR/AMR Challenge Series Event!) 2) Be a spectator. Bring the family out and enjoy the fabulous array of Porsches, Jaguars, Ferraris, Corvettes, Mercedes-Benz, BMWs, Lotuses, Maseratis, as well as a long list of other marques. 3) Volunteer to help us on the day of the show. The exotic car clubs in Denver join together to host and run this show so that all of the income can be provided to help the children. Just send an to me at if you have a few hours to help with registration, parking cars, judging and scoring, or working at an entrance gate. 4) Donate a little extra. An additional $10 per registration would bring in more than $500 extra from our club. Of course, even if you don t register a car, you can Jeremy Rosenberger write a separate check to Cerebral Palsy of Colorado, 801 Yosemite St., Denver, CO Registration information All registrations include two event passes. Registration Fee: $40.00 per car (through May 27, 2011) Late Registration Fee: $50.00 Spectator Donation: $10.00 This year, spectator tickets will be available at participating Shell/Circle K outlets at $1.00 off the $10.00 face value. 14 JOURNEY to the CENTER of the UNIVERSE article and photos Steve Wright Well, maybe not the center of the universe, but possibly where it all began for most Porschephiles... the brand-new Porsche Museum nestled amid the factory works in Zuffenhausen, Germany. I was daydreaming with my good friend Henry Chaperont about the possibility of taking a trip to Germany in conjunction with his annual visit to see his family in Paris. Henry owns Le Bistro restaurant in Colorado Springs and is also an Alpine Mountain Region member; among his many rides are a and a 2006 Cayenne S. Henry was planning to bring his son Greg along as well, and they would 12 spend a couple of weeks in Paris in January of this year. It turned out that I could also manage a few days of vacation during that time period. As luck would have it, my wife Janet who is a pilot for Delta Airlines was flying a trip to Paris from her home base in Minneapolis. I decided to hitch a ride. (Great landing, by

She had to head back home the next day, but I got to stay. After a day or two of sightseeing and eating (very important in Paris the food is always wonderful), we hopped aboard the TGV (Tres Grande Vitesse) high-speed train to Stuttgart. With the advent of the European Union, there are no longer any customs or immigration issues to deal with. It was a piece of cake. In less than four hours, we pulled into Stuttgart. Following a short five-minute ride on the local light rail, we arrived at the factory and museum in the Porscheplatz. We had previously attempted to book a factory tour to coincide with the museum visit; however, the Germans love their vacations, and it turns out that January was the vacation month for the people who are responsible for administering the tours. The Porsche factory, an integral part of Zuffenhausen, seems to meander throughout the town. The new museum is right in the middle of town and is hard to miss. It is huge at least three floors of exhibits and two restaurants. The museum seems to hover on three massive concrete pillars. The interior is quite stark and very white. On the main floor there is also a large viewing area of the cars that are being prepared for display or are being worked on to send out to other exhibits around the world. Most of the cars on display are driveable, and many had window stickers showing their last competition including places like the Monterey Historics and The Goodwood Festival of Speed. Speaking of restaurants, did I mention that food was an integral part of this journey? The museum has a very nice 13

Clockwise from top left: A factory stretch 911; a Type 64 body hammered on the original bucks; a 550 Spyder anchors the Sixty Years of Porsche in America exhibit. 14 cafeteria-style restaurant on the first floor. They also have a very upscale restaurant on the top floor. It s called Christophorus, the same as Porsche s in-house magazine. Since we had travelled halfway around the world to see the museum, it only seemed fitting to enjoy lunch at Christophorus prior to seeing the cars. I imagine that when new owners pick up their GT2 s, they are treated to a fine meal there! Anyway, one hour and 250 bucks later, we headed for the museum. The museum is set up chronologically, from the first inventions of Ferdinand Porsche to the latest RS Spyder. However, it s just as easy to wander from exhibit to exhibit and see what surprises await around the next corner. There are so many important Porsches that it would take many more pages than we have available to describe them. Suffice it to say that almost every car that makes this marque so special is here. When you first walk in, you see a gorgeous bare-metal body of the original Type 64 from This is generally considered to be the first Porsche, even though the first actual car that had the Porsche nameplate was a (serial number 1, also on display). I was especially impressed with a display of a wheel from the Porsche- Lohner Hybrid vehicle built in It was a gas-electric car with electric motors on all four wheels and a gasoline engine designed by Ferdinand himself take that, Prius! There is a special section dedicated to the 917, with at least half a dozen such cars lined up for viewing all famous in their own right. A Rothman s 956 is suspended from the ceiling upside-down, presumably to show that it generated enough downforce at 200 mph to enable it stay there on its own! There was no shortage of unusual Porsches as well. When was the last time you saw a four-door 911? It s here, along with the pre-production Boxster show car, the way-ahead-of-its time 959, the street-legal 1998 GT1, the sixteen-cylinder Auto Union race car from the 1930 s, and the Cisitalia. The list goes on. We were lucky enough to be there while they had a temporary display featuring sixty years of Porsche in Amerika (they put the k in there, not me). It tells the story of the first Porsche distributor in the US, Max Hoffmann, and features a few of the very first Porsches sold in the United States. We were suffering from Porsche overload by that time and decided to root around the factory to see what we could see. A friendly technician in his blue overcoat saw us standing outside of his window like school children and opened it up to show us the cylinder heads he was milling on a giant machine. We felt like we were in Gmünd in 1948, where it all began. Notwithstanding the wonderful food and the hospitality of Henry s family in Paris, the museum was the highlight of my trip. If you are planning a trip to Europe, find the time to visit you will not be disappointed. Steve and his wife Janet have been active RMR members since 1997, currently driving a 997 Cab S and a Cayenne. There is also a well-broken-in 911SC race car in the garage that seems to demand a great deal of attention and money.

Toys for Tots Recognition RMR s holiday party in December included a drive to donate toys to the United States Marine Corps Reserve s Toys for Tots program. Members responded in droves, helping to spread holiday cheer by bringing dozens of toys, which were graciously accepted by LCpl. Josh Boyd and Sgt. Josh Sill of the USMC. The Certificate of Appreciation appearing on the right was presented to RMR in recognition of these contributions. Although this certificate was presented in December, the High Gear editorial staff wanted to remind you of the numerous charitable giving opportunities that RMR participates in throughout the year! 18 summer tsd and econo rallye Saturday, June 25 Back in the 70 s, RMR used to do Econo Rallyes every season. We are not sure whether it was because of gas rationing and emissions standards, or if they just thought they were fun so this year we are going to find out! Leave your Prius or Hummer at home, and let s find out how many MPGs your Porsche gets. This year s rallye will start in Boulder and take you on some of the finest Porsche roads in Colorado. There will be some free zones so you and your Porsche can experience them in the best possible way. More details will be coming out in the next High Gear and on the Web site. Registration will be open in May. Also let us know if you would like to volunteer for this event! 19 rock & roll part ii Saturday, June 18-Sunday, June 19 Can you ever get enough Rock & Roll? Many fans would say NO! Sports car fanatics say the same thing about an RMR/PCA Driver Education Event but especially about the Second Annual Rock & Roll June DE event in We will be going crazy again this year with driving, learning and fellowshipping with our friends while behind the wheel, during timed runs and when telling lies at the bench-racing session throughout Beer:30. Here are the particulars: Who: Anyone with a driver s license, age 18 or older, who has a sports car they want to learn to drive at speed more proficiently. What: World-famous RMR/PCA-sponsored Driver Education (DE) event. All cars must pass safety tech inspection; a waiver must be signed; and noggin buckets (Snell 2005 or 2010) are mandatory. The club has loaner helmets available. Your car need not be a Porsche, but it does need to be a sports car or sports sedan for example, Lotus, Mustang, Corvette and BMW 3 or 5-series have been popular guest cars. No SUV s (except that Porsche Cayennes are welcome) or trucks are allowed. PCA members and Porsches get priority if the event is overbooked. More Rock & Roll music played all day in the track pavilion. The track has nice food catering with reasonable prices offered by the Byers General Store, or you can bring your own. The club provides bottled water throughout the day. Typically excellent early summer weather. Camping at the track is available for a nominal charge. Timed runs. This is one of two RMR/PCA timed events for the year. Timing is done as the final function of the Sunday session. When: June 18th & 19th, Gates open at 6:30 AM; mandatory drivers meeting at 8 AM with first-time drivers meeting (including first time to High Plains Raceway) immediately thereafter; Beer:30 around 5:00 PM both days. Where: High Plains Raceway (HPR) is an extraordinary race track with high speed straightaways, challenging corners and several significant changes in elevation. It is about an hour from downtown Denver (east on Interstate 70, Exit #316 (Byers), then head east on US Highway 36 for 17 miles... you can t miss it). Here s the track Web site: Why:Learn by doing. Find out how to drive your car quickly and safely. Get classroom, in-car and de-briefing instruction from top-flight instructors. Get your track times and shoot for going faster. Bragging rights! Decide if you want to go into racing as a hobby or sharpen your already prodigious track skills. Challenge Series points. How: The club provides free tech inspection sessions on Wednesday, June 8th from around 5:30 to 7:00 PM at several Porsche repair shops in the Denver Metro area. We will have the usual dedicated registration link through our partners at motorsportreg.com on the RMR Web site. We will announce the opening of registration through club e- mail blasts. If you don t receive our s, check the club Web site at rmr.pca.org about two weeks prior to the event. The event registration link is in the bottom center third of the first Web page. You do not need to be a Porsche Club of America member to participate (although a nominal additional charge applies for non-pca members). How much: Single day: Driver $175; second driver (same car) add $150. Both days: Driver $250; second driver (same car) add $225. Questions: Call or Roger Buswell at or roger@rogerbuswell.com. 17

rmr ladies day: are you turned on? She wasn t always comfortable, but no one can say she didn t enjoy her life. She explored her edges, increased her capacity, and lived as big as she could dream. Moved equally by bliss and pain, she played her heart out one moment at a time. She was dialed in. She was courageous. She was turned on. Nicole Daedone, Turned On Woman s Manifesto Exhilaration. Adrenaline. Connection. Sheer, undiluted joy. That s what you ll find at HPR on July 17th, surrounded by great women and fast cars! Have fun learning the line and improving your performance during this full day of track time for women only. Between runs, relax in the shade to chat with new friends, have fun shopping our vendor booths, get a chair massage, and definitely have your portrait taken with your hot car! Let driving that hot car turn you on! A turned-on woman does not trade in measured steps and replicable outcomes. She wants to create, generate, raise the game, and play again. She operates at the edges of her own capacity She believes, she gives, she tries again, and she doesn t check out. Courage is her middle name. Nicole Daedone NAMI Walk My name is John Withaar, and some of you may know me from the PCA/RMR DE events I ve been attending for many years. Some of you may even still have recurring nightmares from the times I was instructing you on the track. What you may not know is my personal story. Twelve years ago, my son was diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia. I learned more than I ever wanted to know about mental hospitals, suicide attempts, drug use, homelessness and incarceration. I also learned about the inadequacy of treatment for mental illness, and wanted to help make more and better services available to families like mine. Because the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) was there for us, I m giving back by serving as the president of the board of the Colorado chapter of NAMI. I m proud to say that NAMI helped thousands of Coloradoans last year, and we don t charge a cent for our educational and support services. We re able to do this because the community supports us through events like the NAMI Walk. Mental illness affects one in four individuals and one in five families, so I suspect my story isn t unique among RMR members. I m very happy to thank our club, PCA/RMR, for making a financial contribution to the 2011 NAMI Walk. Now I m asking my fellow RMR members to individually support this important cause, too. There are several ways, all easy, to do so. 1. Join my Walk Team at changingminds. You can walk with us on May 21 at Stapleton. Bring your Porsche and we ll create an impromptu Concours d Elegance. 2. Create your own Walk Team at (follow the links at the top of the page). Choose a great name, design a T-shirt and make it fun event for your friends and family. 3. If you can t walk on the 21st, make an online donation at Registration opens 5/17/

in the zone April showers bring May flowers, or so the saying goes. Among the Regions of Zone 9, the spring Porscherelated activities are beginning to flower, as they do each year about this time. More autocrosses, tours, show-and-shines, socials and track days are happening, and more and more of you are bringing out the garage queens that have been lovingly stored away during the winter months. As you know, I ve been promoting more activity between the Regions in Zone 9 with the Zone 9 Challenge trophy. The winner of the trophy is that person or couple who have traveled to the most Regions in Zone 9 for a PCA activity. It can be any kind of activity promoted by the host Region. The trophy is huge and would look great on any mantle. But even better than the trophy, think of all the great adventures you ll have along the way, and all the great Porsche-loving people you ll meet and make friends with! Here are a few of the things you might experience as you travel around the Zone. If you re visiting the Intermountain Region, you can tour through several of 27 individual mountain ranges and the amazing canyon country of Utah, or cruise across the great, flat Bonneville Salt Flats. Utah has an amazing array of dramatic scenery and some great driving roads. The Intermountain Region is famous for their tours and their trackdays and PCA Club Race at Miller Motorsports Park, one of the finest track facilities in the world, located just minutes west of Salt Lake City. If you haven t already heard, Salt Lake City has been named the site of the 2012 Porsche Parade. But why wait? Utah is a great state to visit any time of the year, and the Intermountain Region are a great group of fun-loving, friendly people. How about visiting the Llano Estacado Region, based in Amarillo, Texas? One of the smallest Regions in the country, Llano Estacado has a monthly breakfast at Furr s, where a staunchly enthusiastic group of Porsche aficionados meets every month to talk about their favorite marque. This year is the LE s 45th anniversary, and they re planning a party in July to celebrate. Amarillo is located near the Palo Duro Canyon State Park, which has some amazing scenery and great hiking. It s one of those hidden gems of Panhandle Texas. If you want to stay close, you can always visit the world-famous Big Texan Restaurant famous for its huge steaks or take a short walk out to the Cadillac Ranch. Be sure to take your spray paint with you; graffiti is encouraged! If you ve never been to a Driver Education track day, consider one of the many events that the Rocky Mountain Region schedules each year at High Plains Raceway. Zone 9 s largest Region is well-known for its great events, with a large staff of well-trained instructors. Or, if you re not into the track stuff, Rocky Mountain also sponsors one of the largest concours events in the West in Denver each year, with all proceeds going to charity. And, while you re at it, be sure to take a drive up into the mountains maybe along the Peak to Peak highway that runs north-south on the spine of the Front Range. Looking for something different? Why not try a trip to the West Texas Region to peruse two great museums? The Buddy Holly Museum in Lubbock chronicles the life of one of America s great songwriters and the man who inspired Don McLean s classic 70 s song. American Pie. If you time it right, you can catch one of the autocrosses out in Big Springs, put on by the WTR each month. A huge venue, the autocrosses are fun and fast and allow for enough runs to tire you out. Then head down to Midland for a trip through the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. Texas is well-known for its oil industry, but I bet you probably don t know how it all works. This great little museum chronicles all the advances in oil-well drilling from the early days to the present. But the real treat is found in the Jim Hall Chaparral Museum, which houses all the famous technologically ground-breaking race cars of the 1960 s and 70 s. If you re a fan of racing history and technology, this is a must-see. As we are moving into the month of May, you should really think about a trip to the Roadrunner Region for the annual Fiesta New Mexico, held each Memorial Day weekend, this year returning to Santa Fe. The Roadrunners are wellknown for their autocrosses and day tours, but Fiesta New Mexico is the Region s hallmark event. A multi-day, multi-event weekend with participants from around the Zone, Fiesta New Mexico combines autocross, fun-rally, touring, show-and-shine concours, and great socials for a great weekend of Porsche-themed fun. But if you re busy Memorial Day weekend, venture through the Land of Enchantment for another weekend of fun driving and social Sean Cridland, PCA Zone 9 Representative events. New Mexico has a great array of fun driving roads taking you through some incredible scenery, and the Roadrunners have something scheduled nearly every weekend throughout the year. The Carrera Region may be small, but it has a lot going on. With driving events in Alpine, Texas and Deming, New Mexico, and some great social events in El Paso and Las Cruces, the Carreras know how to have a good time. The driving roads south and east of El Paso provide some surprisingly beautiful scenery and some great American history. If you re traveling in the fall, be sure to participate in the Carrera s Oktoberfiesta. Last year s event featured historic racing hero Vic Elford visiting with each of the drivers and sharing some of his many great racing stories from the era that brought us some of the greatest Porsches ever: the 911, 908, and 917. Carrera Region president Dede Rogers promises an event just as great, if not more so, for this coming autumn. And finally, if you love touring (and what Porsche owner doesn t?), then consider going on a tour with the Alpine Mountain Region of southern Colorado. The Alpines are nationally known for their tours, with some of them winding up through the Black Hills of South Dakota, Jackson Hole and Yellowstone, Telluride, and the area around Crestone Mountains and the Great Sand Dunes National Park. With an amazing number of mountain passes within its borders, the Alpine Mountain Region not only takes great advantage of some great driving opportunities, but also mixes in visits to some of the most interesting historic sites and some great meals and a lot of great side-activities. So, all this said, if you have a mind for wanderlust, not only can you win a beautiful and very large trophy, but you ll also have some really great adventures and see some amazing country and meet some great people along the way. As we all know, Porsches are the best touring cars in the country! In Zone 9 we have some of the best touring roads and country in the world. So, pack your bags and get out for an adventure this spring, summer and/or fall. You ll be glad that you did. If you d like more information about the Zone 9 Trophy, go online to zone9.pca.org. I look forward to seeing you at one of the events. 19

the rearview mirror Amy Legg-Rogers, Historian May 1981 Spring Rally Tour masters Ted Shaw and Lesia Iwasyk had a unique event in store: a treasure hunt using photographs. The objective was to match up a scenic photo taken in a specified location with a photo of a detail taken within ten feet of the same location. First place honors went to Bob and Joanne Sillin. 20

i get around A Classic Is Forever Quick question: if you own a classic car that s either too fragile, too slow or too valuable to drive on public roads, except on rare occasions when it needs to be exercised for a few miles at walking speeds, is it still a car? Or, has it become an objet d art? Really, now isn t a car, by definition, something that takes you someplace? Beyond, maybe, out of the trailer and onto 17-Mile Drive at Pebble Beach during Concours Week? I would submit that, if it s not drivable in today s cut and thrust, it might as well be hung on the wall. Or displayed in one s home showcase. Or in a museum. Or in a parade. Or on a lawn on a sunny Sunday. It s no longer a transportation vehicle. It s a collectible. Not that there s anything wrong with that, as Jerry Seinfeld would say. You can admire the design, the styling, the engineering... to your heart s content. But, I ask you, how different is that from, say, admiring the brush strokes on a Picasso? It s no longer a car or, more precisely, a transportation vehicle. It may have been one, at one time. But no longer. At the risk of generalizing, a cutoff occurred sometime in the mid- 50s. You look at what people were driving in earlier eras and, well, with few exceptions, none had the get-up-and-go to keep pace with a Smart ForTwo. And it shows. When was the last time you saw anything on the road from the 30s? Anything from the 40s? Anything from the 50s except, maybe, 356 s and C-1 Corvettes? If they re not oxidizing their way back to nature, they re in somebody s collection somewhere, getting lovingly worked over by a set of boar s-hair detail brushes. It s pretty much the same for racing cars. I remember reading an interview with Mario Andretti, who said he hated being offered rides at vintage track events in cars he raced, back in the day. The reason, he said, was that with very few exceptions, what he was being asked to drive were not much more than raw, dangerous, amateur recreations of what he remembered the car to be, fully sorted, on race day. They belonged in museums. When one looks ahead, say 40 or 50 years from now, I see a similar problem. It won t be my problem. If I m still around, I ll be too busy drooling on myself. Thank God. It s the kids today the ones who have the RS Spyder poster above their bed. I worry for them. They tootle home in their clapped-out 996 GT3 RS, the dream car of their youth, and the thing is running rough. Where do they find the diagnostic Dick Badler devices of today, and the plug-in modules? Pep Boys? Will there be a Pep Boys? That s the rub. In a word, it s electronics. Given enough time, money and skill, a good mechanic today can recreate an engine any old engine almost from the ground up. It s machine shop work. Maybe sophisticated machine shop work. But the skills haven t changed much, over the decades. On the other hand, how many home hobbyists can fix a bad mica condenser in the oscillator circuit of a Philco radio from the 30s? My parents still have one of those tabletop behemoths, with real wood surfacing, the kind you see in pictures of FDR delivering Fireside Chats. They say it still works. But they re too afraid to turn it on. What if a tube goes? says my father. With electronics, when something does go, you have several choices. Either you slap in a new module, if you have one... or you toss it, or you put it away and hope it appreciates in value to future generations. Take a Commodore PC. Or an Apple I. They also make good use as boat anchors. Might the same fate come to a new 918 Hybrid, because nobody makes Lithium-Ion batteries anymore? There s just one solution: push it into the car gallery and have a good look, every chance you can get. 21

what we do Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more. Each year RMR organizes a variety of opportunities to enjoy and learn about your Porsche. Tour A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event. RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR typically offers several. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade as well. Rally A rally is a competitive event in which contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type. Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies at least one of each type are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year. Autocross (AX) An autocross is a competition in which drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals typically only one or two cars are on the course at any time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit. Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and Membership Social Membership socials provide an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening s program. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a slide show from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst. RMR s membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch High Gear and the RMR Web site for details. And if you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Program Committee Chair or a Board member! Tech Session A tech session is just what it sounds like a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, do-it-yourself procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by experienced Porsche 24 Driving Events Non-Driving Events an AX school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade. Driver Education (DE) A driver education event provides a safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming! As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement, for bragging rights, etc. RMR hosts six DE s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo, and (possibly in the future) Pikes Peak International Raceway tracks. Club Race A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and heats (race sessions), often involving both sprint and endurance races. As a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMRhosted First Ever Anywhere club race at Second Creek in Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, a club race is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up! RMR hosts one club race each year at High Plains Raceway which, combined with the Super DE event, adds up to one thrilling weekend! technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear. RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the off months when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d Elegance A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to perfect condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation ( daily driver or full preparation or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as display only, for owners who wish to participate but not compete. RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year. Editor The print version of High Gear reaches over 2,000 members in 1,200 households!
