3 The Editor s Letter Although it is winter we have been blessed with beautiful sunny days and spectacular blue skies, luring landy enthusiasts out into the wilds for 4x4 fun and lazy afternoon braais. Zack and I haven t had much opportunity to get out and 4x4 for a while now, so it was fantastic fun to drive in the gates event held at Highstakes. It felt good to get behind the wheel of Monster again and she did not disappoint. Monster did her thing and for once I did quite well. We have a couple of great events coming up over the next few months and I am looking forward to getting back in to the zone. 4 News & Events This month the club held the 3 rd Gates event at Highstakes in Cato Ridge. 3 rd Gates Event Highstakes Highstakes certainly has a lot to offer and kept the competitors and spectators alike well entertained. The morning that started out nippy, gradually warmed into a beautiful sunny winter s day as a small group of standard and modified class tackled the obstacles set up in between the trees and snaking up and down the eroded slopes and gullies. Each class took turns, one after the other, to tackle two gates in a row so that we could watch and cheer each other on. The modified class, as per usual, put on a heart stopping performance as they defied the laws of physics. This was a great crowd pleaser. The standard class had a couple of challenging gates that tested the nerves and some technical gates that required clever planning and tactical driving. 3

6 After some difficulties on one of the obstacles, the 110 s came into their own on the last gate obstacle, a fantastic progressive. After a fantastic lunch by the pool, the points were tallied the winners announced. Heather won the standard class and Theo won the modified section. LP4A generously sponsored vouchers as prizes; which our winners received. 5

7 Ten Minutes with Haig Tell me about your very first Land Rover? My first and only Land Rover is a Disco 1 V8 How long have you been 4x4ing and who taught you to 4x4? I ve been 4 x 4ing for four years now and I am self-taught. What land Rover do you drive now? As Above Does your Landy have a name and what inspired that name? Name is Mufasa inspired by the movie Lion King as it roars like Simba s father If you could have one modification/accessory fitted to your Landy, what would it be? Front and rear diff locks What is your favourite Land Rover memory? Every drive is a favourite drive especially the Killarney Raids that were hosted by Pro Creations and the gates events done by the club. What is your worst Land Rover memory? The first time I broke a rear diff Where have you been in your Landy? Not far because the fuel costs too much! Which was your favourite? I haven t found a favourite place as yet (still looking) 6

8 Where would you still like to travel to in your Landy? I would love to go to the Rain Forest with my vehicle, and drive through the rain forest, and make my own road. If you could own any Land Rover (besides what you own already) what would it be and why? A new Discovery Sport. Besides land-rovering what else do you enjoy doing? Off road riding, camping and fishing. 7

Complete novice soft dirt road trail, no low range required. Suitable for all Land Rovers including the Freelander. 2. Limited low range required but suitable for the novice driver. Suitable for all Land Rovers including the Freelander. 3. Low range and limited off road knowledge required. Suitable for all Land Rovers with certain trails not suitable for the Freelander. 4. A low range technical trail suitable for the experienced. The inexperienced will be able to do the trail, as assistance will be available from the more experienced members. Suitable for all Land Rovers except the Freelander. 5. Extremely technical, suitable for the experienced and/or modified vehicles only with the possibility of vehicle 8 damage.

Defender 6x6 rebuild project I m looking for various Defender parts and body panels for my 6x6 Defender project. The vehicle is basically only a rolling chassis and I have a motor and gearbox on now. I still need stuff like: 1. Defender dash, fenders, door B-Pillars for 5 door configuration, Hardtop bin and a 90 or 110 full roof 3. Various other Defender bits and pieces like door handles, seals, window winders, door trim etc. Fair prices will be paid for said parts and any unwanted items, will also be received with open arms as well as any donated stuff towards the cause of the project. This classic collector's model needs enthusiastic owner who can prolong its life, and who, I am sure will enjoy it as much as I have. Vehicle is ex SAAF fwd airfield mobile radio commcen. It has had a complete engine re-build - new pistons, bearings, valves etc.(13000km done since) A new stainless steel fuel tank has been fitted. It has an auxiliary fuel tank and a 20 litre water tank. Two spare wheels, free wheel hubs fitted and original hubs retained, auxiliary battery charging circuit. All 10

12 brakes have been overhauled and still bedding in. (New servo and m/cylinder plus 4 new front slave cylinders etc). New clutch fitted 3000 km ago. All spares and manuals go with it.
