This doesn t set too well for those of us who are itching to hit the road and put miles on our beloved Gold Wings. So, before we literally hit the road, remember.. we have not been riding our beautiful 800 pound Gold Wings all winter! Some of our skills may have gotten a little rusty while we awaited the return of spring. Most of us could benefit from a little practice before flying into those long dreamed of twisties! Take a mental note of what your skills were at the end of last year s riding season and, when you go out for the first time this year, take a note of your current skills. Now might be the time to schedule a morning of parking lot practice (PLP) or a Road Captains Course. The time spent is well worth it making for a fun and safe riding season. Once you have done your PLP, and possibly taken the Road Captains Course, you will be ready for our next big District Event. The much talked about and anticipated Missouri District Rally. We will again meet in the rolling hills of Branson. Guided tours and self-guided rides will be available as well as cash prizes and big discounts at great local restaurants. Debby Biddlingmeier is working hard on securing vendors. Just a few of the vendors attending include Niehaus Cycle Sales, Accessory Pit, Horizon Trikes and Overby s Two Wheel Sound. This year some of these vendors have chosen to attend the Missouri District Rally rather than Americade. Let s show them what a wise choice they have made! Glenn White is again lending his knowledge of the area in organizing great guided tours and self-guided rides. There will also be opportunities for classes. John and Nancy Hofmann will be offering LTP courses, Jerry Blatt will offer First Aid/CPR and Big Mike Bayuk will offer Rider Ed

Seminars. As always, Carol White will do her magic in making registration run smoothly for all attendees. Jerry Rothermich will be working hard behind the scenes to assist the vendors with their setup needs and Les and Sara Gibson are working hard to secure permits and taking care of other paperwork. Many Chapters have stepped forward and volunteered to host events such as the light parade to Branson Landing, on bike games, a bike show, an ice cream social and much more! So wear a smile, as you never know where Allen Biddlingmeier s camera will catch you, and come join your GWRRA family and friends June 5 th, 6 th and 7 th for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. It s the Journey not the Destination! Bruce S. Watkins Missouri District Director DID YOU KNOW Television producer Paul Henning inspired by a Boy Scout camping trip to the Branson area created "The Beverly Hillbillies," which went on to become one of the highest-rated television shows of all time. In fact, Henning brought the Clampetts "home" to the Ozarks in 1967, filming five episodes on location at Silver Dollar City. Henning later donated 1,534 acres just outside Branson that became the Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area. He also donated the Beverly Hillbillies' 1921 Oldsmobile truck to the College of the Ozarks where it is on display in the Ralph Foster Museum. 2

My armor is put away and I am a bit weary. I want to tell all the members I am so proud of each and every one of you. So many came from so far; you braved the snow and ice. I saw so many wonderful costumes; many were handmade and looked fantastic. I want to send out a big thank you to our costume and skit judges, the Minnesota District couple of the year, Joe and Jan Marek. Vicky and Ann (Minnesota) were our judges for the centerpieces. The table center pieces were very unique to say the least. It seems to me the competition grows more difficult each year. I want to thank everyone that brought items for door prizes and everyone s participation with the games and educational seminars. Sara and I have already been working on the next Spring Fling; we will do our best to make it a time to remember. Sara and I want to thank EVERYONE who worked registration, games, hospitality, decorating, seminars and anything else that required you to step up and lend a helping hand. Talk about stepping up, how about our District Director Bruce Watkins, coming off a vacation in the hospital, Bruce showed us that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Thank you Bruce! Sara and I hope to see everyone at Branson for the District Convention (Rally) and hope that the weather is a little more cooperative. Ride safe ATGATT! Les and Sara Gibson 3

VISABILITY: SEE AND BE SEEN Well Folks Riding season is here! YES, SPRING has sprung and the days are getting more tolerable to take our Wings out for those long awaited rides on our beautiful Missouri back roads. One thing we have to remember is that motorcyclists have not been sharing the road with automobiles the last few months. Cage drivers have not been seeing us and have gotten into the habit of not looking for the smaller two wheeled vehicle. This thought brought to mind an article I read some time ago titled: Unseen Gorillas and Motorcycle Safety published in the American Motorcyclist Magazine. In it, researchers at Harvard University had viewers watch three different films, in which teams of three people, (one team in black shirts and the other team in white shirts) were passing a basketball back and forth among themselves. The viewers were asked to count the number of times the basketball was passed between the team. In the background a woman carrying an umbrella passed across the screen. In the two other films a person wearing a gorilla suit passed by, and in one case even stopped to beat his chest. When the viewers were asked questions after viewing the films surprisingly 46 percent did not see the woman or gorilla! The name coined for this phenomenon is inattentional blindness, and may explain why drivers don t always see us. The people in the study were concentrating on a task, counting ball passes, and the gorilla simply did not register because it was not relevant to the task. Drivers too are concentrating on a task and don t always expect to see us. So what can we do to be seen and maybe attract the attention of those inattentive drivers? Actually there is quite a lot we can do and we should employ as many strategies as we possibly can. Many of the strategies involve very little extra expense and some are just a matter of lane positioning. In 23 states, motorcycles are required to have their headlights turned on. Most motorcycles now come with the low beamed hard wired automatically. Another idea has been to ride with your high beams on. Having a bright beam helps you stand out from the other reflective objects around on a sunny day. Running with your lower cowl fog lights or driving lights is another option. Since the advent of cars with always on headlights, keeping your bright lights on during the day may be the only way to stand out from the crowd. Headlight modulators are another popular option. I have heard other motorcyclists express the opinion that modulators are annoying, but that may be the point. If your headlight attracts attention drivers may notice it. And speaking of lights, your best safety value comes from placing most of your accessory lights on the front half of the motorcycle. According to the Hurt Reports more than three-fourths of all accident hazards are within 45 degrees of either side of straight ahead. Also, don t forget to use your turn signals when turning. Those blinking yellow lights may just be the thing to get through when nothing else does. Your lane position is an important part of your visibility strategy. When riding alone, proper selection of lane position helps you not only to see further down the road, but to be seen as well. In straight sections, stay near the center of the lane to protect your lane from intruders who may wish to share the lane with you. Studies have indicated that drivers do not use their side view mirrors as they 4

should. Riding in either the left or right track could put you in a blind spot if this is the case. Never ride in the no zone area of big rigs. See the following: ( When going around a curve, pick the outside of the curve so you can see farther down the road, and hopefully be seen as well. Keep in mind that you are entitled to use the entire lane width, and you should switch your position to maximize your visibility. Some ERC instructors have dictated that switching lane positions on a straight section might just attract attention, and hopefully wake up a few drivers. When purchasing news items of gear, or replacing old ones, one of your considerations needs to be its visibility. It has been suggested and advised to wear leathers as the most protective material you can purchase, but if you are thinking of other materials, then also think visibility. Remember bright colors will attract attention. The Motorcycle Awareness Division choice of fluorescent green is an excellent example of a bright and noticeable color. Several riding suit makers include highly visible or retro-reflective materials in their riding suits at strategic points, and these can be a good choice. Consider a vest with retro-reflective stripes around the chest area if you wear a leather jacket. Also consider putting retro-reflective decals on your helmet as well. Remember with all the distractions in an automobile these days of GPS, DVD players, map reading, newspaper reading and the dreaded cell phones, motorcyclist are at risk for not being noticed. By making that extra effort to be seen might keep us from becoming a vehicular statistic. RIDE OFTEN, RIDE HARD BUT MOST OF ALL RIDE SMART 5

We would like to thank everyone who attended LTP seminars presented at Spring Fling. We would also like to thank Bruce Watkins and Robert Phelps for helping present those seminars. At Spring Fling we began the newest seminars in LTP Training - the Target Training seminars targeted towards Chapter Directors, Assistant's, Treasurer's and Membership Enhancement Officers. We trained over 40 Chapter Directors during the Spring Fling weekend. On Friday and Saturday during the Missouri District Convention, trainers will be presenting many seminars. We hope that all of you try to attend at least one of these presentations. Remember that presenters take many hours out of their personal time to learn the presentation, so that the members of GWRRA are kept well informed. Leadership Training seminars are geared around your everyday life; Conflict Management, Stress Management, Time Management just to name a few. Remember that all of the seminars in Leadership Training will help you deal with situations in your chapter, work and at home. John and Nancy Hofmann Master District Trainers 6

Bug bites and stings With warm weather almost here we will be spending more time outdoors, repairing the damage winter did to our yards, barbequing, or just enjoying sitting outside of an evening relaxing. However, the warmer weather also brings out the bugs. So, how can we minimize getting bitten and if we do how do we treat it. Following are some tips for preventing and treating bites and stings. What are some of the things you can do to keep insects away? Use barriers such as window screens and netting. Avoid wooded, brushy, and grassy areas when possible. Don't wear heavily scented soaps and perfumes. Use caution eating outside and drinking; don't leave drinks and garbage cans uncovered. Don't wear bright colors, which attract bees. Wear long sleeves and long pants when possible. Tuck pant legs into socks or shoes. Wear a hat for extra protection. Get rid of containers with standing water Use insect repellent Using insect repellant Use insect repellent according to the labeled instructions. Spray insect repellent on clothes or skin, but not on the face. Avoid applying it around the eyes, or to areas where there are cuts and irritated skin. After returning indoors, wash skin with soap and water to remove repellent. What you can do for itching and pain from bites and stings The use of Over The Counter (OTC) antihistamines can bring itch relief, as well as the use of creams and lotions that can be applied directly to the affected area; i.e.: Benadryl cream, or Calamine lotion. Using an OTC pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Tylenol), can provide relief of pain. Most reactions to bees and other stinging insects are mild, but severe allergic reactions can be deadly. An allergic reaction can occur even if a person has been stung before with no complications. If this occurs activate EMS immediately and be prepared to administer CPR if needed. Jerry and Scooter Missouri District MFA coordinators 9

We are Leaster and Sara Gibson and are extremely honored to have been selected as the Missouri District Couple of the Year. I recently retired from my job of thirty-five years. Sara is currently working at Saint Anthony s Medical Center in the Pharmacy as the operations manager. We have a son, William, who is about to graduate with his masters degree from Southeast Missouri State. Our Goldwing and the Goldwing Road Riders Association has brought Sara and I together even more than we thought possible. I was fifteen the first time I rode and it was my friend s bike; and yes, it was a Honda. I have owned a handful of different brands of motorcycles. Back then a long ride to me was thirty miles and I did not ride safe; I didn t ride all the gear all the time. Sara was glad we decided to talk to owners of Goldwings before we purchased one. She never dreamed I would talk to a Goldwinger she had worked with years before. That is where our journey with the Goldwing Road Riders Association began. After being members for a period of time Sara and I were asked if we would be interested in participating in Rider Education. We were a little reluctant but decided to give it our best effort. We are currently Rider educators for Chapter Z. When we were asked about taking on the job of Assistant District Directors, we had to give it some long serious thought. Sara and I decided we would give it our best. That is what Goldwing Road Riders Association is all about, giving your best and participating. After all, with a motto of Friends for Fun Safety and Knowledge how can you go wrong? Speaking of friends, our family continues to grow and grow. The more states we visit the more family we meet. Our family has even grown outside of the United States. Being members of the Goldwing Road Riders Association truly takes you to places you thought you would never go. One of the most important things we have learned from a prior Region Couple of the Year is Participate, participate, participate! We hope everyone enjoyed their time at Spring Fling and we look forward to seeing you at the Missouri District Rally in Branson this June. Make your plans now as the rooms are going fast. 10

How many of you remember the Chiffon Margarine Commercial from the 70 s where we fooled Mother Nature. It was where we tricked her into thinking the margarine was butter but it wasn t. Well she is still mad at us in Only she is tricking us now. She is giving us a warm day here, and a warm day there, letting us get our Gold Wings out for a ride and then the next day COLD weather and SNOW. Well, Mother Nature we fooled you again we are still going to have fun!!!! Last month I was able to attend some Chapter meetings in Missouri and Illinois along with a LTP class and Rider Ed Class. Going to these meetings and classes gave me the opportunity to meet new friends and see old friends from the past With the weather warming there will be many opportunities to attend GWRRA Rallies that will be coming up in the future to meet new friends, see old friends and get ideas from them for future events. Oh and did I mention have FUN!!! The warm weather is coming so please, everyone ride safely, have fun, and wear your gear while riding.
