1 - Driver Education Content Area: Health Grade Level(s): Tenth Course Description: Driver s Education is a mandatory course to fulfill graduation requirements. The ultimate goal in this class is for students to gain knowledge of safe driving practices and rules of the road. Each student will receive a New Jersey Driver s Manual, which they will be required to read. At the culmination of the course, students will be given the state driver s written examination. This exam will be a test grade for the course. Student s who score an 80% or higher will receive an official card stating that they have passed the written exam. This card will be valid for two (2) years from the exam date and will serve as proof that they passed the exam and will not have to take it again during the licensing process. 2 Unit 1 Unit Summary: During this unit students will be made aware of the licensing process and the requirements needed to receive your GDL. Summarize NJ motor vehicle laws and regulations and determine their impact on health and safety. Do you think the age to receive your driver s license is fair? Do you believe the GDL system is working? Become aware of the Graduated Licensing System. Learn all the requirements needed to receive a NJ driver s license. 3 Unit 2 Unit Summary: During this unit students will become aware of the dangers of driving and learn safe practices for the roadway to help minimize their risks. Interdisciplinary Connections/Content Area Integrations: Health, History D D.1 Analyze the relationship between and drug use and the incidence of motor vehicle crashes. Plan and implement an advocacy strategy to simulate action on a state, national, or global health issue including but not limited to, organ/tissue donation. Do you think you are a good driver? What characteristics make up a safe driver? How do you feel about organ donation? Learn safe practices to use on the roadway. Learn the process for organ donation. How to minimize their chances of getting in a crash. 3

6 Unit 4 Unit Summary: During this unit students will become aware of defensive driving strategies and coping methods for being involved in emergency situations.
