We ve also explained why doing so is such an important process. And that s not all! Also new is the way Bendix identifies its brake pads. 2 Bendix celebrates YEARS Delivering brake pads and components over the past 60 years, Australia s leading automotive brake manufacturer Bendix, is celebrating a milestone in innovation and technology driven manufacturing in Australia that has set new standards in driver safety, performance and comfort. Founded in 1955, Mintex, as the company was originally known, was established to meet the needs of Australian motorists. Located in Ballarat it was a modest manufacturing plant initially employing just 30 people however a short time later the fledgling company was bought by the U.S. Company Bendix Corporation and Bendix Mintex was formed. During the 1970 s Bendix Mintex developed new and innovative manufacturing processes for the production of disc brake pads that would see it begin exporting Australian technology overseas. These developments continued as the company began working on new friction materials to further improve the performance and competitive pricing of Australian brake pads. Advanced technological development in metal presses resulted in higher quality backing plates to match the new friction materials and in 1993 the company s dedication to innovation and quality saw Bendix Mintex named Manufacturer of the Year by the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association. The company s focus on research and development in the late 1990 s coupled with a heavy investment in a state-of-the-art sound analysis laboratory resulted in a strong emphasis on reducing brake pad noise for smoother and quieter braking. In line with the continuing growth of the company within Australia and in overseas markets the company changed its name in 2002 to become FMP Group (Australia) Pty Ltd (Friction Materials Pacific). By 2005 further Bendix advanced developments were launched with General CT plus Heavy Duty brake pads with a revolutionary Titanium Stripe. The new and innovative technology provided instant friction to deliver sure stopping power from the moment the customer first drove out of the workshop. With the superior quality standards uppermost within the company, the ultimate level of quality accreditation was achieved in 2006 for OEM supply to the car companies making Bendix one of the key suppliers to the Australian automotive industry. High performance Street-Road-Track brake pads were introduced in 2007 to wide acclaim, meeting the needs of serious drivers with powerful vehicles being driven on the limit. Innovation continued with the launch of premium quality Bendix brake shoes in 2009, the 2010 release of the revolutionary STEALTH Advanced Technology brake pads setting new standards in smooth, quiet braking and 2011 brought the beginnings of a very successful and ever expanding ancillary range of brake products such as brake lube, brake fluids, brake wear sensors etc. These were followed by the Blue Titanium Stripe, Hybrid Fusion Technology and the Euro+ range. Now workshops had access to an extensive offering of high performance brake solutions that reduced fitting time and improved braking performance for customers. Workshops have directly benefited from Bendix innovation with the development of a unique marketing tool in the award winning Bendix Brake Identifier App - a mobile tool for the mechanic s phone that reduces the time in finding the correct replacement part whilst a job is underway. Investment in the plant at Ballarat has been significant with the latest being the commissioning of a $3.5 million IAG moulding press as part of an $8.8 million upgrade of the manufacturing facilities to deliver world class high tech products for the Asia Pacific region. 3 2003 HOLDEN ASTRA TS General CT Brake Pad Install This April we visited our friends at Heasman Steering to film the latest Bendix TV episode. In this episode we demonstrate how to correctly install front and rear brake pads onto a customer s 2003 Holden Astra TS City. A common occurrence during the install process of the front brake pads (P/N: DB1424) are when mechanics attempt to install the outer front brake pad by applying force with a screw driver or similar tool. It s important to note that the correct way to install the outer front brake pads is to take extreme caution as you insert the brake pad. The brake pad and outer clip must be eased into place by hand without the use of any tools. (Note: This process is the same for installing the front brake pads (P/N: 7690) on the Ford Focus LR ) Prash, the owner of this vehicle travels approximately 40km per day on suburban roads. The pads suited to Prash s driving style are the Bendix General CT as they are your general purpose disc brake pads for passenger vehicles, specifically suited for general suburban, city and freeway driving. WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING BRAKE PADS, THERE S NO ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL SOLUTION. The Bendix Test Pilot Program is a comprehensive series of independent tests covering a range of its products, to prove not only their performance but also that when it comes to choosing brake pads there is no one-size-fits-all. On my first drive home with the newly installed Bendix General CT brake pads I could feel the improvements instantly in comparison to the previous pads. What I m quite impressed with is the initial bite performance. I am much more confident behind the wheel as I approach intersections. I would recommend them as your next replacement brake pads. Prash Ranjan Watch the video of the Holden install in action at MITSUBISHI EVO 9 Street, Road, Track Brake Pad Install For our next instalment of the Bendix Test Pilot Program we have Automotive Photographer and Blogger, Matthew Everingham joining us to help put our products to the test. Today we ll be installing a set of Bendix Street Road Track brake pads onto his Mitsubishi Evo 9. We quickly got acquainted with Matthew over the phone by asking him a few quick questions about how he drives his car. He s all about serious performance cars and driving and that s exactly what our Street Road Track brake pads were designed for. If you drive your performance car to work on a regular basis, compete in a handful of Trackdays but cringe at the thought of swapping out your street pads for a more aggressive pad for Trackdays then these are the pads for you. They give you confidence to handle busy, unpredictable driving on the STREET, where conditions can change suddenly. They re reliable in demanding conditions, such as negotiating mountain roads with your foot constantly pressing on the brake pedal, or in cool running conditions such as cruising the open ROAD, where there are long intervals between braking. And assurance that your brakes will keep delivering lap after lap of hot, hard, last second braking on the TRACK. To the right are the SRT s alongside the previously installed pads. Notice the drainage grooves on the SRT s to help disperse water, grit and dust from between the friction surfaces and the discs. If you re getting ready to do a brake job, don t forget to buy the proper lubricants along with your new brake pads. Apply Bendix Ceramic Synthetic Lubricant to caliper hardware including, pins, slides and bushes to ensure smooth operation. The lubricant is a noise dampening compound that will also provide protection against dirt, corrosion and uneven pad wear. Early impressions of the new brake setup are quite good. I didn t really have any complaints with the previous brake pads. They were adequate but I knew they wouldn t perform on the racetrack which is what I wanted. I can t wait to put them to the test at the track. On the street the pads have a strong progressive feel and the initial bite and stopping power is excellent. Knowing Matthew, we re sure the new SRT pads will get a real workout so we ll catch up with him in a few months to find out what he thinks. 4 TESTING & CHANGING BRAKE FLUID Testing Brake Fluid As part of the Bendix Test Pilot Program, Ben, a mechanic at Heasman Steering shows how to test your brake fluid with the proper tools, in the correct way. Brake fluid is designed with a high boiling point to withstand the extreme temperatures generated during braking and needs to be checked to ensure it meets the exact temperature requirements. DOT 3 and DOT 4 Brake Fluids are hygroscopic fluids that will absorb moisture when exposed to air. This occurs in instances such as opening the reservoir cap or through brake lines where the moisture level can build up over time. Brake fluid is designed to absorb moisture to prevent it from pooling and causing corrosion on metal components (see Figure 1 & 2 below). This is the normal process of the brake fluid s life-cycle so we need to check that the moisture is at safe levels. Elevated moisture levels reduces the boiling point and effectiveness of the brake fluid (Figure 3). In hot weather conditions or in a vehicle that is experiencing heavy braking, the moisture can vaporize causing a vapor lock in the system (Figure 4). The vapor is compressible and prevents the solid hydraulic lock that fresh brake fluid delivers leading to a soft brake pedal or even complete brake failure. When it comes to testing brake fluid, it s vital to understand the different types of brake fluid ratings and the testing equipment required to accurately test it. Ben Mechanic, Heasman Steering to formula, this test is not an accurate result unless the tester is calibrated to the manufacturer s product when new. Bendix recommends a tester that heats the brake fluid to determine the correct boiling point. Using a boiling point tester is the only accurate way to test brake fluid performance. It takes less than a minute to measure the boiling point and confirm if the brake fluid has absorbed too much moisture to be safe. Pictured: A conductivity tester Pictured: A boiling point tester Changing Brake Fluid If a brake fluid test indicates your fluid is no longer within the specified operating requirements, a brake fluid change must be performed to ensure your vehicles brakes do not fail under heavy loads. Brake fluid by nature absorbs moisture from the atmosphere through microscopic pores in braking lines, and through the small vent in the master cylinder reservoir. As brake fluid absorbs water the boiling point is reduced significantly, in just 12 months most brake fluid will have absorbed approximately 2% water, reducing its boiling point by 75 degrees. The amount of moisture absorbed by your brake fluid can be detected using a brake fluid tester. A sample of fluid is boiled to determine if the boiling point has dropped below manufacturer specifications, indicating high levels of moisture in the fluid. Testers that use a conductivity measurement to produce a theoretical boiling point are not considered accurate as each tester is not calibrated to the manufacturer s product it is being used on. There are 2 common tools used to test brake fluid. One is a conductivity tester, the other is a boiling point tester. Bendix does not recommend using a conductivity tester as they have been known to fail when testing freshly opened brake fluid. Conductivity testers estimate the moisture content by converting the conductivity into an estimated boiling point. Since brake fluids vary from formula Watch the video on how to test your brake fluid at Once the fluid has been changed, it is important to bleed the system, removing any air bubbles trapped in the line which may cause a spongy brake pedal and in extreme cases brake failure. Figure 2: Brake Line with Acceptable Levels of Moisture Over time, moisture is absorbed by the brake fluid, decreasing the overall boiling point. After a while, brake fluid absorbs too much moisture, and needs to be replaced. Figure 4: Brake Line with Vaporized Moisture If the moisture vaporizes, it can form a vapour lock that dangerously reduces the brake line s hydraulic function.
