March Meeting President Steve Tarney called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM. Treasurers report: The treasurer s report was read and approved. Field condition: The field was reported to be in good condition. Steve Tarney and Gary Keup rolled the field on 4/14/16. Old business: Fun Fly events this summer: Bob Ryan reported he had not received a list of fun fly events from the RC Associating meeting, and that he would follow up on getting the list so it can be published on the club website and in the newsletter. Fun Fly: Mark Koerner has designed the flyer for this year s event, and has gotten Graphic Edge Printing to donate 1000 flyers. Greg Williams is coordinating this year s event, and is looking for volunteers to help with contacting vendors for raffle prizes, and discussed participating in the 4th of July parades in Cedarburg and Grafton to publicize the event. Jim H will contact Circle B recreation about borrowing tables and chairs for the event. New business: There was a discussion of parking procedures at the field. Parking is only allowed in the parking area near the sheds. There is no driving or parking allowed anywhere else on the site except for the fun fly event in July. 3 Show & Tell 2 Show and Tell: Mike Crotteau displayed his Goldberg Anniversary Cub under construction. The model will be powered by a 1000 watt electric motor swinging a 13 prop. Greg Williams Brought in the wing of his Carbon-Z T-28 covered in Econocote. He did not bring the plane in because of the size, and stated that there will be a test flight soon. Noah Pecor showed off his TBM Avenger which he designed from a three view drawing with MS Paint software and built from Dollar Tree foam. The cowl is made from foam board and poster board. The model will be electric powered with a 15 long operable bomb bay and a Brazilian Air force color scheme.
4 Raffle Winners 3 Jim Hendrickson won the FMS T-28 DIck Husting won CA accelerator Tom Johnson won glue applicators Mike Thurner won epoxy Jeff Thompson won Epoxy
5 The Great Quadcopter Race 4 Several members took on the challenge of the mini quad race announced at the April meeting, among them were Steve Tarney, Bob Lemon, MIke Crotteau, and Tom Johnson. The first heat was deemed inconclusive by the onlookers due to the lack of pylons on the tables, and inability of a few pilots to stay on the course. Official looking pylons (read boxes on tables) were added to the tables marking the course, the second heat was held and Bob Lemon was declared the winner, and awarded The James H. Doolittle Memorial Cutting Mat.
6 Proper Li-Po battery Disposal 5 Unlike Ni-Cad batteries, lithium-polymer batteries are environmentally friendly. For safety reasons, it s best that Li-Po cells be fully discharged before disposal (however, if physically damaged it is NOT recommended to discharge Li-Po cells before disposal - see below for details). The batteries must also be cool before proceeding with disposal instructions. To dispose of Li-Po cells and packs: 1. If any Li-Po cell in the pack has been physically damaged, resulting in a swollen cell or a split or tear in a cell s foil covering, do NOT discharge the battery. Jump to step Place the Li-Po battery in a fireproof container or bucket of sand. 3. Connect the battery to a Li-Po discharger. Set the discharge cutoff voltage to the lowest possible value. Set the discharge current to a C/10 value, with C being the capacity rating of the pack. For example, the 1 C rating for a 1200 mah battery is 1.2 A, and that battery s C/10 current value is (1.2 A / 10) can be used, such as a power resistor or set of light bulbs as long as the discharge current doesn t exceed the C/10 value and cause an overheating condition. For Li-Po packs rated at 7.4 V and 11.1 V, connect a 150 ohm resistor with a power rating of 2 watts (commonly found at Radio Shack)to the pack s positive and negative terminals to safely discharge connecting it to an ESC/ motor system and allowing the motor to run indefinitely until no power remains to further cause the system to function. 4. Discharge the battery until its voltage reaches 1.0 V per cell or lower. For resistive load type discharges, discharge the battery for up to 24 hours. 5. Submerse the battery into bucket or tub of salt water. This container should have a lid, but it should not need to be air-tight. Prepare a plastic container (do not use metal) of cold water. And mix in 1/2 cup of salt per gallon of water. Drop the battery into the salt water. Allow the battery to remain in the tub of salt water for at least 2 weeks. 6. Remove the Li-Po battery from the salt water, wrap it in newspaper or paper towels and place it in the normal trash. They are landfill safe. Source: Thunderpower RC
