RIFT VALLEY ENERGY PLAYING THE MARKET Renewable Energy for Private Off-takers and Grid-Feed 2 nd Tanzania-German Renewable Energy Conference 11 th July 2016, Dar es Salaam Michael Gratwicke PASSIONATE ABOUT DEVELOPING RESOURCES IN AFRICA
Who is Rift Valley Corporation? PASSIONATE ABOUT DEVELOPING RESOURCES IN AFRICA PAGE 6
Who is Rift Valley Energy? BTL Mw combined heat and power biomass power plant (Zimbabwe) PASSIONATE ABOUT DEVELOPING RESOURCES IN AFRICA PAGE 7
Who is Rift Valley Energy? Mwenga Hydro - 4 MW Hydro (Tanzania) PASSIONATE ABOUT DEVELOPING RESOURCES IN AFRICA PAGE 8
Mwenga Hydro Associated Rural Distribution Network (Tanzania) Currently 1,800 customers connected All customers are pre paid 250 of these (14%) are commercial or SME users Commercial customers pay a premium (T1) rate, with balance being rural households paying a lifeline (D1) tariff All schools, clinics, government offices, and hospitals connected PASSIONATE ABOUT DEVELOPING RESOURCES IN AFRICA PAGE 9
Mwenga Hydro Associated Rural Distribution Network and Expansions 37 transformers currently installed across 17 villages 56 transformers in 32 villages planned by mid km of power lines currently constructed 360 km of power lines planned by mid 2017 Estimated population of license area is 65, MW wind park planned to boost dry season generation capacity, so as to manage anticipated future seasonal dry season generation shortfalls within own network PASSIONATE ABOUT DEVELOPING RESOURCES IN AFRICA PAGE 10
Markets Available to Mwenga Hydro All Distribution and Generation Activities are regulated by EWURA under the terms of the respective Licenses Sales to Main Grid currently make up approximately 95% of production MHL operates under the 1 st Generation PPA. Price is in Tsh, and is based on the avoided Cost to TANESCO. Avoided cost is reviewed each year by the EWURA Working Group Mwenga Hydro declined the option to switch to the REFIT PPA, with a price fixed in USD PASSIONATE ABOUT DEVELOPING RESOURCES IN AFRICA PAGE 11
Markets Available Sales to SME s (currently approx 4% of production) Approximately 200 small scale business electrified and operating in area, and make up approx 70% of the retail sales. Sales are at the T1 rate. Efforts underway to boost Productive Use of Electricity in the target market, and so increase both the number of SME s and their associated electricity consumption patterns Sales to Rural Households (currently approx 1% of production) Most rural houses connect to network over time, Connection fees are subsidized, low cost ready boards assist in bridging household wiring cost barriers Take up is slower than with the SME s, and consumption ramp up is even slower still. Marketing efforts underway to encourage more electrical appliance usage Subsidized life line tariff (D1) applies for first 50 kwhrs used each month Sales to Large Scale Commercial Anchor Customers 3 Tea Factories connected to network on Standby Power PPA s at T1 rate, and are supplied when TANESCO Grid is down via island mode operation. Can provide a market for approx 45% of the power generated in the event that the grid is down PASSIONATE ABOUT DEVELOPING RESOURCES IN AFRICA PAGE 12
