31 Accurately Predicting Hurricane/Typhoon Intensity Challenge Better predict hurricane wind speed (how hurricanes and typhoons become stronger). Obtaining air-sea interface data difficult and dangerous in storm environments. Solution Wave Glider equipped with Airmar weather station (measuring temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, gusts, barometric pressure), a Datawell wave sensor and a thermistor chain. Results Ability to ground truth satellite data in real-time (ability to collect data in "eye" of storm). Better understand the dynamics of air-sea interactions in a storm environment safely. Continued operation through sea state Liquid Robotics, Inc Moffett Park Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94089, USA. All Rights Reserved. 31

36 Environmental Monitoring Challenge Ocean habitats are vulnerable to a wide variety of chemical and biological incursions, caused by either nature or man - Examples: algal blooms, oil spills or wastewater / ship discharges Prevention and response both require timely detection and accurate assessment of severity, geographic extent and dynamics Need for widespread and persistent observation of many different environmental factors 2012 Liquid Robotics, Inc Moffett Park Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94089, USA. 38 Results Mid-Pacific Algal Bloom On June 20th 2012, Papa Mau encountered a bloom between Hawai i and the first TAO mooring. Benjamin encountered that same bloom about 6 days later. The diurnal signal is due to photoinhibition. The phytoplankton adjust their position in the water column near midday to limit sun exposure. The only independent validation of the PacX data is by satellite. Above are chl-a concentrations as determined by NASA s ocean color radiometer known as MODIS. The circled line in the image below shows the path of the glider corresponding to the 3-D plot Liquid Robotics, Inc Moffett Park Drive, Sunnyvale, 38 CA 94089, USA. All
39 Results Mid-Pacific Algal Bloom The biological and physical properties within this distinct water mass are highly correlated. Papa Mau encountered the feature first. Benjamin s response 6 days later across chl-a, salinity and temperature is remarkably similar Liquid Robotics, Inc Moffett Park Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94089, USA. All Rights Reserved. 39
