1 Instructional Leaflet IL02009EN EOEM panelboard and switchboard (OPS) Program OPS Program overview The OPS Program enables EOEMs to purchase panelboard/switchboard chassis, boxes, trims, molded-case circuit breakers, and fusible switches and assemble them into an electrical distribution assembly with a UL label. The OPS Program also allows EOEMs to assemble Eaton panelboards/switchboards from basic components under an extension of the Eaton UL label. The OPS Program is limited to EOEMs whose primary business is the manufacture and sale of electrical distribution equipment as evidenced by an existing UL label for panelboards/switchboards and have a listing in the UL green book entitled, Electrical Construction Materials Directory. EOEMs approved to use the OPS Program can order a mix of assembled chassis or parts to build panelboards/switchboards based on their volume, to achieve the most economical mix of purchase cost and value added by assembly.
2 Instructional Leaflet IL02009EN EOEM panelboard and switchboard (OPS) Program Assembled chassis advantages Panelboard/switchboard chassis are designed for sequence phase connection of branch circuit devices. This allows complete flexibility of circuit arrangements to more evenly balance the electrical load on each phase. On PRLa, PRL2a, PRL3a, and PRL4a panelboards/switchboards, thread forming hardware is used. This makes circuit device installation or rearrangement easy. Connectors for making connection from main bus to the line side of branch circuit devices are preassembled in the panel chassis for all chassis types except PRL 3a, PRL 4B, and PRL 4F. Minimum inventory is realized through consolidation of many small parts into one simple chassis catalog number. Unit costing is faster and more accurate with only a few components to consider. The flexibility of the chassis design allows coverage of more panel types with less inventory. Integrated short-circuit rated panelboards A far-reaching innovation in the field of panelboards is the concept of integrated short-circuit ratings. Eaton pioneered this concept several years ago when it was determined that certain molded-case circuit breakers, when connected in series with lower interrupting rated molded-case circuit breakers, would protect the downstream circuit breakers in circuits with fault current capacities equal to the rating of the upstream circuit breaker. These arrangements are acceptable and can be UL listed where the circuit breaker combinations have been tested in accordance with UL 67 standards. Some of the user benefits of integrated short-circuit rated panelboard systems are as follows: Reliable short-circuit system In an integrated short-circuit rated panelboard system, the main breaker and the branch breakers subjected to the available shortcircuit current work together to limit the level of fault current. Their combined simultaneous tripping actions enable them to safely reduce the amount of fault current. This dual tripping action effectively insulates the faulted circuit that allows the upstream breaker to be reset and return the unaffected circuits to service. Once the condition on the faulted circuit is corrected, the circuit breaker can be reset and returned to service, keeping maintenance and downtime at a minimum. UL listing Eaton tests certain combinations of main and branch breakers for each specific short-circuit rating. Tests performed in Eaton s high power laboratory are specified and supervised by UL to meet their requirements. A panelboard/switchboard system that successfully passes these tests is then listed by UL with a short-circuit rating. Positive labeling All panelboards/switchboards listed and used with integrated shortcircuit ratings can be identified with labels or nameplates indicating the short-circuit ratings of the panelboard/switchboard, the type of main breaker, and branch breakers allowed to be installed in the panel. This ensures the correct application of each panelboard/ switchboard in the system and the positive identification of the circuit breakers that can be used for replacements or modifications. Cost savings The use of integrated short-circuit rated panelboards/switchboards can provide significant savings when properly applied in a system where high fault currents are present. Pow-R-Line Components Advantages The OPS Program is also designed for the high volume panelboard/ switchboard types where the OEM can maximize value added through complete assembly from basic components. This program feature gives the OEM the same advantage of the Eaton panelboard/switchboard design that is available in the assembled chassis portion of the program. Features include: Sequence phase connection of branch circuit devices Flexibility of circuit arrangement to balance electrical load on each phase Main busbars drilled full length for ease of circuit arrangement Flexibility of panelboard/switchboard design to cover various types of configurations In addition, panelboards/switchboards assembled by OEMs on the OPS Program can take advantage of the Eaton design UL label extension for panelboard short-circuit rating. The panelboard/switchboard parts material lists have been arranged in the following format for PRLa and PRL2a: Parts for main breakers Parts for branch breakers Parts for main lugs Labels Standard chassis parts Standard bus parts Deadfront cover Neutral and ground The PRL3a and PRL4a material lists have been arranged as follows: General chassis parts Neutrals/ground bars Covers/trims Breaker connectors Switch connectors This arrangement should facilitate the selection and preparation of material requirements. 2
3 EOEM panelboard and switchboard (OPS) Program Instructional Leaflet IL02009EN How to use the OPS Program The OEM may choose the following methods to build a panelboard/ switchboard: Configure and order assembled chassis interiors from Eaton Order components and piece parts from Eaton to build assemblies To configure and order assembled chassis interiors from Eaton: Reference chassis configuration section of this manual Determine desired system characteristics Choose an available chassis catalog number from among the offerings Customize and complete the catalog number using the Explanation of Catalog Numbers table to specify voltage type and busbar type NNote: Aluminum is the defaulted bus type; however, PRLa, PRL2a, and PRL3a can be ordered with copper, silver-plated copper, and tin-plated copper busbar types. Submit order with Eaton on product code as follows using suffix Q49: PRLa product code3089a PRL2a product code3089b PRL3a product code3089c PRL4a product code3089d To order components and parts for assembly at the OEM: Determine desired system characteristics Choose fully rated or series rated (reference Panelboard and Switchboards Series Rating Information Manual C96944H02F) Select the appropriate panel type Proceed to appropriate PRL component section Record the desired component catalog numbers to be ordered.
