1 FOUR-ON-THE SNOW Newsletter A publication of Tucker Sno-Cat Corporation Made in the USA since 1942 NO SNOW TOO DEEP NO ROAD TOO STEEP September 2013 Volume 5 Issue 9 This month Sterling talks about three things; brake pads, pinion seals, and breather vents. Brake pads on our machines should last a long time because they get very little use. They could lose their function if they wear prematurely from misalignment or from being covered in grease. Check your mounting bracket and make sure that when applied the pads contact to rotor evenly. Grease contamination can happen especially on the older machines because in those days we mounted the brake on the input side of the transfer case and did not have a grease shield to protect that area from grease being thrown off the drive line u-joint. Summer service is also a good time to check breather vents on the differentials, you should consider extending that vent into the engine compartment. If the diffs are filled to their correct level and are parked sideways on a slope, especially in the Summer, then you can get some fluid to drain out of them. Extending the vent will eliminate this and also keeps moisture out if you are driving through deep water. Pinion seals have been known to leak and of course should be taken care of, but it may be an indication of a worn pinion bearing. You can do a quick check by grabbing the drive line, where it connects to the differential, and checking for any movement in the yoke up and down or side to side. He also says summer service has been really busy but if you have questions please do not hesitate to call, he still may be able to get you serviced before the snow starts. As discussed earlier new L.E.D. interior lights will be fazed into production starting this fall. They are brighter and will not have the individual off-on switch, instead manual off-on is controlled from the dash mounted light switch. Above are two pictures of the Model 422; the first number (4) stands for the series (400), second number (2) is the number of tracks, and the third number (2) is the number of doors. Tucker Sno-Cat started manufacturing this model in the early 1940s while still located in Grass Valley, California. The Model 422 and variations, 421 no doors or top and door, were made into the early 1950s until the demand dropped off because of the improved four track version. The upper left photo was from Mt. Sunapee State Park in New Hampshire and was used for grooming, note the grooming drag. The upper right photo was from Canada, Department of Mines & Resources, Dominion Water & Power Bureau and was used to transport snow survey crews to the back country. Page 2 of 5
