1 NEW COLLECTION CALENDAR INSIDE WASTE WATCH January 2018 Volume 29 SMALL STEPS REDUCE WASTE A small action every day something as simple as taking reusable bags when shopping makes a difference. While it may only eliminate a few plastic bags from your family, multiply that by over 70,000 homes on the Island, and multiply that again by the 52 weeks in a year, and this simple action can become significant. Of the 3 Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), reducing is the most important. By creating less, we have less material to sort and less to dispose of. It also means that less material ultimately ends up in landfill. Waste reduction has many aspects. The graphic on the left can help explain some of them. Waste diversion means keeping Only take/buy what REFUSE: material out of you need landfill and Choose products with finding valuable REDUCE: less packaging uses for them. Since the onset Avoid disposables; offer RE-USE: of Waste used items to charity Watch, recycling and composting Blue Bags #1 & #2; have continued RECYCLE: electronics, and other recyclable items to be very effective methods of diversion. Unsorted waste Backyard composting; COMPOST: proper sorting in is simply a lost compost cart opportunity. Properly sorted, some materials Only items with no can be recycled DISPOSAL: value are buried into new prod- in landfill ucts saving not only landfill space but also resources, energy and money. Organics produce compost, a valuable soil amendment. On PEI we divert hazardous substances, and this also helps to protect our environment. PEI is recognized for being a leader in Canada with waste GERRY MOORE, CEO diversion. In fact, our diversion stats are nearly double the Canadian average, and as Islanders we should be extremely proud. IWMC is committed to waste diversion and is continually exploring new methods of managing waste. An example of this is the new mattress and box spring recycling program launched last year. An average mattress uses up about a cubic meter of landfill space, yet 95% of that mattress can be recycled! Since inception, we have sent approximately one tractor trailer load of mattresses and box springs every week to a recycling market (over 90 full loads of mattresses have been shipped to date). Foam, cotton, steel and wood is recovered then remanufactured into new products. It s easy to visualize the amount of space that would have been used up had this material been simply buried. Waste diversion starts with a mindset, then action. Together, we all can take steps to reduce the waste we generate and also commit to proper sorting. Adopting a small change, one step at a time, makes a huge difference. Thanks for your continued support. Gerry Moore
2 DID THE DRIVER MISS YOU? Carts and blue bags must be at curb by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day. Drivers start their routes promptly at 7:00 a.m., and while the day of the collection is not likely to change, the time of your pickup could easily change from week to week. Having your material out on time helps to ensure you won t be missed. Spring/Fall Cleanup and Christmas Tree Collection is a little different in that material must be curbside by 7 a.m. on a specific day. For these campaigns, collection is not usually on your regular collection day, but could occur at any time during the week. Having your material curbside on the date indicated is important. Please post the Residential Collection Calendar included in this newsletter somewhere in your home as a reminder, or jot down the dates on your family s monthly calendar. 3 CART OWNERSHIP & CARE Waste Watch carts belong to IWMC but are assigned to individual properties. Customers are responsible to care for the carts on their properties and to ensure they are in good working order. A properly working cart makes it easier to take it to the curb and helps avoid potential injury. Please do not paint, drill holes or modify the carts in any way as this could void their warranty. Here are some additional reminders: CART REPAIRS / REPLACEMENTS Fill out the Cart Service Request Form on the front page of our website or contact Customer Services by phone or . Carts are under warranty and repairs are free. If your cart has been damaged beyond repair, replacements can be arranged. IF YOUR CART IS STOLEN If your cart goes missing, please contact IWMC as soon as possible. The cart s serial number will help our staff track your cart down. ONE SET OF CARTS PER FAMILY Every residential and cottage dwelling is entitled to a set of carts one black and one green. Properties with more than one unit are eligible to receive a set of carts for each unit by contacting Customer Service. Sometimes we notice homes with extra IWMC carts. Carts not registered to specific properties will be removed and returned to IWMC s inventory. If sorted material exceeds the capacity of the Waste Watch carts, homeowners may place up to two additional containers (such as old garbage cans) or bags beside the cart for collection (excess waste can be placed in clear, transparent bags, and excess compost can be placed in paper yard and garden bags). WHEN A HOUSE / COTTAGE IS SOLD Carts are assigned to the property, not to the property owners. Carts remain on the property for use by new owners when a home is sold. NEWLY-BUILT HOMES OR COTTAGES Carts are delivered upon request by the owner. The Cart Service Request Form on our website can be filled out, or customers may contact Customer Service. Please allow two weeks for delivery. WHEN A HOME / COTTAGE BECOMES VACATED When a dwelling has become permanently vacated, collection service will be stopped after Customer Services has been advised and the assigned carts have been returned to IWMC. In order to change the Waste Watch fee applied to the respective property tax bill, customers are required to submit a legal declaration form. This form is available by contacting Customer Service, and arrangements can be made with IWMC s Commissioner of Oaths, free of charge, if so desired. CONTACT INFORMATION info@iwmc.pe.ca Additional sorting guides & calendars can be printed from our website or picked up at any town/city hall or Access PEI.
