CAV Benefits Basic Safety Messages Optimizing truck movement The Alternate Optimization Program 1.0 (AOP) optimizes truck movement to minimize bobtail trips for the drayage company that deployed the program as part of the Freight Advanced Traveler Information System (FRATIS) prototype test in Dallas-Fort Worth, TX. DFW-FRATIS-AOP 1.0, published
CAV Benefits Basic Safety Messages CaA-Speed-Harmonization-v1.0, published Optimizing traffic flow. a software set that analyzes realtime traffic conditions to compute and communicate speed commands for CAVs with the overall goal of harmonizing traffic flow. The software set includes on-board speed control software for CAVs, server software for a simulated Traffic Management Center (TMC) and an on-board Human Machine Interface (HMI) 9

CAV Tolling Developments Existing Vehicle Market: Universal Toll Module Genetex Corp announced delivery of a multi-protocol transponder Delivery Schedule: Fall 2018 on Model Year 2019 vehicles. Challenges: Inter-Operability Potential for technology migration (DSRC, 5G, wireless and more) Challenges: Transponder ID issued Home accounts (discount programs) Tracking vehicle ownership change impacts on transponder ID 14
CAV and Tolling Mobile devices and applications have made it much easier for toll agencies to interact with customers. Many agencies and third parties have developed technology to interact with customers via phone or communications integrated in the vehicle. Alerts and changing toll rates can be communicated to the customer to make a decision on tolls vs time savings. Connected Vehicles could notify highway operators and emergency services of collisions or system failures The Internet of Things 15
CAV - IBTTA CAV Working Group IBTTA CAV Working Group Chair: Lev Pinelis, Transurban IBTTA Staff Contact: Mary Cadwallader Sub Group (s) CV Tolling Standards Launched in May 2017 to facilitate CAV collaboration with a tolling perspective. An information sharing resource to expand understanding of CAV. Objectives Share local and regional initiatives in the CAV space. Discuss infrastructure owner and operator issues stemming from CAV developments. Collaborate on ways the tolling industry can respond to the emerging CAV field of practice. 16
CAV Maryland CAV Working Group Established in 2015 by MDOT Secretary Pete Rahn MD CAV Showcase/Demonstration at the IBTTA 86 th Annual Meeting Opening Event Diverse Membership of: Transportation stakeholders Elected officials State and local agency representatives Representatives from highway safety organizations Education and research institutions Automotive industry Public health and safety Insurance representatives Emergency responders 17

CAV MDTA CAV Plan Striving to Succeed MDOT is assembling an overarching CAV strategic plan for all of it s transportation business units. The Maryland Transportation Authority has adopted a CAV Plan, a living document that is expected to change as technology advances. 19
CAV Preparing Our Workforce MDTA s CAV Goals Maximize customer experience with the latest vehicle technology. Improve safety and travel time reliability. Seek opportunities to partner with technology providers and automakers. Prepare the MDTA work force for the technology of the future. Communicate with customers on use of CAV technologies at MDTA facilities. Proposed Planning Campaign Goals To educate employees, customers and business partners about CAV To raise general awareness levels about CAV Outreach to inform internal and external stakeholders about CAV developments as they occur To create a web page to educate and communicate 20
CAV Preparing Our Workforce Proposed HAV Emergency Response Operations (HERO) Response to Pedestrian(s) Response to Approaching Emergency Vehicle Response to Emergency Vehicle Adjacent to Roadway Impromptu Lane Closure Response to Emergency Vehicle in Roadway Established Lane Closure (MUTCD complaint) Roadway Closure Response to emergency personnel directing traffic Proposed IT Systems Review ITS System Build Out Construction Command and Control Maintenance ITS Support Training 24/7 on site Support Cyber Security Sabotage Spoofing of Traffic Control Devices Third Party control of Vehicle 21
CAV Preparing Our Infrastructure MDTA DSRC Pilot Phase I (1- year) Plan Goals Collect, store and report on BSM data received Understand BSM content and DSRC presence in vehicles outside of study Identify possible future applications Concept Installed 4 RSUs and 2 OBUs. Added 3 OBUs on loan from FHWA to test backend compatibility with 2009 and 2016 standard messages. OBU broadcast BSM to RSU then forwarded over cellular modem to a backend cloud server. MDTA DSRC Pilot Phase I Results BSM1 data received/collected for vehicle size, position, speed, acceleration, heading and brake status. Recorded number of encounters by vehicle ID, width, and length. Able to collect BSM and record encounters with non-project vehicles (BSM 2016 Standard). 22
CAV Preparing Our Infrastructure MDTA DSRC Pilot Phase I Lessons Learned Technology constantly evolving MDTA DSRC Pilot Phase II Planned Scope Software Vendor production capacity and tech support GPS Connectivity in Tunnel environments Upgrades / migration to IPv6 network Raw BSM data required filtering Devices Collaboration and Sharing in Lessons Learned Data Processing Architecture Evaluation Network Evaluation 23
CAV - Are we prepared? In the long run, driverless cars will help us reduce accidents, save time spent on commuting, and make more people mobile. The onboard technology is developing rapidly, but we re entering a transition stage in which we need to think carefully about how it will interact with human drivers and the wider driving environment. During this period, the key question we should be asking is not when will self-driving cars be ready for the roads, but rather which roads will be ready for self-driving cars.
