4 Introduction Purpose: This annual report of district enrollment is designed as an internal document for use by the staff. This document can be viewed at The data within reports demographics on the official enrollment for the district. The official enrollment is established on the New York State Basic Education Data System (BEDS) day in early October. Additional information is included that is not part of the BEDS report October o K-12 enrollment increased by 131 students (.4%) from the October 2006 enrollment ( ,717; ,586). o Grades K-8 enrollment decreased by 526 students (2.3 %) from the October 2006 enrollment ( ,324; ,850). o Grades 9-12 enrollment increased by 657 students (6.7%) from the October 2006 enrollment ( ,393; ,736). Frederick Douglass Middle School (School #72) grades 7-9 closed. The school year is the first year for the use of the multi-racial ethnic category. Terms: The following terms are used in this report. Knowing the definition of the terms as used by the State and this district will be helpful in understanding the data. Disadvantaged is used to describe students who receive free or reduced lunch. Students With Disabilities (SWD) is used to describe students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Limited English Proficient/English Language Learner (LEP/ELL) is used to describe students who have not yet reached proficiency on the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT). 3

6 Historical District Data The following will apply when reading this document regarding historical district data: The District went through a secondary restructuring plan. Five middle schools were created for grades six through eight. Sixty percent (60%) of sixth grade students remained in elementary schools. High schools had grades nine to twelve (9-12). Charlotte Middle School No. 60 grades 6-8 Thomas Jefferson Middle School No. 63 grades 6-8 James Monroe Middle School No. 66 grades Dr. Freddie Thomas Middle School No. 75 opened as a grade 6-8 building The advent of Universal Pre-kindergarten Program James Madison School of Excellence No. 64 opened as a grades 6-8 school A transition was made to full-day kindergarten in all elementary schools Franklin Montessori School No. 53 opened as a PreK The small school initiative began with Benjamin Franklin High School No. 62 Benjamin Franklin High School No. 62 started transition to close Careers High School No. 76, a small high school, opened SHAPED No. 77 Alternative High School was closed Middle schools were reconfigured into grades 7-12 high schools 6 th grade students were returned to elementary schools Dr. Freddie Thomas Middle School No. 85 transitioned to becoming a high school by adding a grade each year Career School No. 76 changed its name to BioScience & Health Careers High School No. 76 Benjamin Franklin High School No. 62 closed and the following smaller high schools were opened: - Global Media Arts High School at Franklin No International Finance & Economic Development Career School at Franklin No The second small school initiative began with the closure of Edison High School No. 70 the opening of four smaller schools: - School of Business, Finance and Entrepreneurship at Edison No School of Engineering & Manufacturing at Edison No School of Applied Technology at Edison No School of Imaging & Information Technology at Edison No. 94 Monroe Middle School converted to a high school by adding a grade each year Josh Lofton Alternative Education High School No. 87 closed 5

Morgan Elementary School No. 37 closed James Madison Middle School No. 64 closed School Without Walls High School No. 69 expanded to grades 7-8 at a separate location Joseph C. Wilson Magnet High School No. 67 established as a foundation academy with grades 7-9 at the former James Madison School of Excellence campus The third round of small schools initiative began: Northeast College Preparatory High School at Dr. Freddie Thomas No. 73 Northwest College Preparatory High School at John Marshall No Frederick Douglas Middle School No. 72 closed New York State began collecting data on a new Multi-ethnic category Additional Notes Flower City Elementary School No. 54 is the only school with grades 3-6. Early Childhood Elementary School No. 57 is the only prekindergarten to grade 2 school. Nathaniel Rochester Community School No. 3 is the only school with grades K-9. Students at Young Mothers & Interim Health Academy Program are enrolled in their original home school. The student attends the Young Mothers Program during pregnancy and the year their child is born. In academic year, the Northeast College Preparatory High School housed at Dr. Freddie Thomas and Northwest College Preparatory High School located at John Marshall school building were relocated to the former Frederick Douglass Middle school building. Secondary schools grade configurations are 7 th 12 th ; 9 th 12 th and 10 th 12 th. 6

8 New York State Definitions The racial/ethnic designations used in this item do not denote scientific definitions of anthropological origins. For the purpose of this report, a student should be included in the group to which he or she appears to belong, identifies with, or is regarded in the community as belonging. No person should be counted in more than one racial/ethnic group. a) American Indian or Alaska Native A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North America, and who maintains cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition. b) Black or African American (not Hispanic origin) A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. c) Asian or Pacific Islander A person having origins in any of the original peoples of East Asia, Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands, and Samoa. d) Hispanic or Latino A person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. e) White (not Hispanic origin) A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, North Africa, or the Middle East. f) Multi-Racial (not Hispanic origin) A person having origins in two or more of the categories of people classified as American Indian or Alaska Native, Black or African American (not Hispanic origin), Asian or Pacific Islander, or White (not Hispanic origin). NOTE: Any person of Hispanic or Latino origins, in whole or in part, should be reported as Hispanic or Latino. 7
