Fitting front-mounted equipment Fitting front-mounted equipment This document describes a number of solutions for fitting front-mounted equipment. More information is available in the document Limitations for bodywork and optional equipment. Front-mounted equipment can block important equipment such as radar. There are mounting points for different types of front-mounted equipment on Scania chassis, e.g. supporting legs for crane, snow plough and winch. Follow the EU directive on External projections of cabs, 92/114/EEC, or UNECE regulation no. 61 when fitting front-mounted equipment and protections on vehicles that are not excepted from these directives. IMPORTANT! Protect the radiator when fitting front-mounted equipment. Ensure that the cooling capacity is sufficient after the installation. Use high-mounted headlamps when front-mounted equipment obstructs the normal headlamps and direction indicator lamps More information on high-mounted headlamps is found in the document Highmounted headlamps. 08:70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 1 (18)
Mounting points Mounting points The vehicle is delivered as a standard version with two towing pins, located in the base brackets in the front edge of the chassis frame. The exception is vehicles with bumper version 130 mm. The standard version for these is the same as for vehicles with attachment holes for front-mounted equipment described further on in this document. A Mounting points for towing pins The distance between the mounting points for towing pins (A) depends on if the vehicle has a standard or a wide radiator. 1,158+/-1.5 mm on vehicles with standard radiator 1,217.5+/-1.5 mm on vehicles with wide radiator More information on the distance between the attachment points is found in the vehicle s chassis drawing, ICD (Individual Chassis Drawing). 08:70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 2 (18)
Mounting points Fitting front member If a front member is to be fitted in the same base brackets as the towing pins, the towing pins must be replaced with expander bolts. It is important to ensure that there is no play between the front member and the base brackets. The front member can be ordered from the factory and is delivered with expander bolt brackets and expander bolts fitted at the factory. The front member with expander bolt brackets and expander bolts can be ordered as a repair kit as follows: Part Front member with bracket, standard radiator Front member with bracket, wide radiator Part number Connecting member Part Front member without bracket, standard radiator Front member without bracket, wide radiator Part number When fitting expander bolt and bracket only, the following parts must be ordered. Please note that the quantity refers to one side of the front: Part Part number Qty per side Block Pin Spacing ring Taper ring Expander bolt with bracket More information is found in Preparations for front-mounted equipment :70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 3 (18)

Factory-fitted option packages Factory-fitted option packages In order to facilitate fitting front-mounted equipment, the following option packages, for example, can be ordered from the factory: Attachment holes for front-mounted equipment Front member for front-mounted equipment Bracket for torque rod More factory-fitted option packages are available to order. More information on the different preparations is found in the document Preparations for front-mounted equipment. 08:70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 5 (18)
Factory-fitted option packages Attachment holes for front-mounted equipment Vehicles ordered with preparation for front member or 130 mm bumper design has special base brackets, comprising 4 pcs M20 thread pads per side. B A Measurement (mm) A B C Description The distance between the inner mounting points of the base brackets The distance between the inner and outer mounting points of the base bracket The distance between the upper and lower mounting points of the base bracket C Note: On vehicles prepared for a front member, the measurements between the base brackets depend on if the vehicle has a standard or wide radiator. Preparation for front member Radiator A B C Standard 1, Wide 1, Front member preparation with bumper version 130 mm. B A Radiator A B C Wide 1, View from front and from above 08:70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 6 (18)
Factory-fitted option packages For vehicles with a bumper protruding 50 mm there is a preparation for fitting a towing unit. The preparation suits several purposes. For example, a winch may be fitted instead of a towing unit. The preparation consists of 2 x M22 threaded pad with 50 mm distance in the bumper. The attachment allows a pulling power of max 24 tons. 24 t Thread pads If the vehicle is ordered with a towing unit, this is transport-fitted in the passenger side boarding step unit. The thread pads are covered by a cover plate which is fitted with a T40 Torx screw. If the vehicle is ordered without a towing unit then the thread pads are covered by the centre part of the bumper Thread pads covered by cover plate 08:70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 7 (18)
Factory-fitted option packages Front member for front-mounted equipment The vehicle can be ordered with front member fitted from the factory. The front member can also be purchased separately and retrofitted on vehicles ordered with mounting holes for front-mounted equipment. Contact a Scania dealer for more information. The front member is suitable to use for most types of front-mounted equipment. The front member ensures that the connection between the mounting points is sufficiently rigid for permissible loads. More information on permissible loads is available later in this document. It is possible to order additional front-mounted equipment in combination with the front member e.g. brake connections and centrally mounted tow hook. More information on permissible loads on factory-fitted front members is available later in this document :70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 8 (18)

Front supporting leg Front supporting leg Front supporting legs can, for example, be used on vehicles with a crane to provide better stability and to enable the vehicle to handle heavy loads in front of the cab. When fitting front supporting legs the following requirements must be fulfilled: The front member must be dimensioned for a minimum moment of inertia of I = 780 cm 4 and be made of steel. The front member requires at least this rigidity in order to avoid damage to the mounting to the frame. The maximum permissible load on the supporting legs is 8 tonnes (4 + 4 with 2 supporting legs), on the condition that the distance between the supporting legs and the front axle does not exceed 1,580 mm and that the vehicle is equipped with a crane subframe. The mounting points in the base brackets can take a maximum load of 10 tonnes (5 tonnes per side) exactly at the mounting points. When the load is applied further forward, the maximum permissible vertical load is reduced as described above If higher loads on the supporting legs are required the frame can be reinforced, however, the nominal tension in the frame must not be higher than 300 MPa. The mounting points in the base brackets can then take a maximum load of 18 tonnes (9 tonnes per side) exactly at the mounting points. IMPORTANT! A calculation which verifies the tension level in the chassis frame must be presented to Scania before starting the conversion Base bracket Information on how far forward the subframe must be brought is found in the document Subframes. 08:70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 10 (18)
Maximum load Maximum load Horizontal load IMPORTANT! The vehicle chassis frame and standard brackets are dimensioned to handle a certain load. A higher load can damage these parts and impair the properties of the vehicle. F The maximum permissible load and tensile loading (F) may be applied a maximum of 250 mm below the centre of the upper jointed bracket, see illustration. 250 The value of the maximum permissible load depends on the width of the chassis frame, according to the table below. The values assume that the load is applied straight from the front Chassis frame Width Load (kn) 700, 800, 950, 957, 958 Normal , 800 Wide , 957, 958 Wide 250 All frames with 130 mm bumper design Normal/wide :70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 11 (18)
Maximum load Permissible load for base brackets with expander bolt brackets with connecting member Calculate using the following formula if the load is applied at an angle: F max = 40 sine α kn The example below shows how the maximum permissible load and tensile loading is reduced with the pitch angle for chassis frame 950, Wide. The values apply to factory-fitted components. Maximum permissible load F, as function of angle α: :70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 12 (18)
Maximum load α (º) F (kn) F α A front member/connecting member/plough bracket with expander bolt bracket can also be ordered fitted at the Scania factory. More information on ordering front members is found in the document Preparations for front-mounted equipment. 08:70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 13 (18)
Maximum load Permissible load for base brackets with attachment holes with connecting member Calculate using the following formula if the load is applied at an angle: F max = 60 sine α kn The example below shows how the maximum permissible load and tensile loading is reduced with the pitch angle for all frames with bumper version 130 mm, Normal/ Wide. When fitting your own front member, it must have the corresponding moment of inertia: I = 780 cm 4 and made of steel :70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 14 (18)
Maximum load Maximum permissible load F, as function of angle α: α (º) F (kn) F α The maximum permissible load (F) must be applied vertically within 125 +/- 50 mm below the upper beam flange. A front member/connecting member/plough bracket can also be ordered fitted at the Scania factory. More information on ordering front members is found in the document Preparations for front-mounted equipment. 08:70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 15 (18)
Maximum load Dimensioning the front member Calculate the section modulus according to the following formula (for solid, rectangular cross-sections): W = h b2 mm³ 6 The table below shows the relationship between the maximum permissible load and the section modulus of the member and can be used to dimension a suitable front member for the intended application. Maximum permissible load F, as function of section modulus W: F W (mm 3 ) F (kn) , , , For example: 2 supporting beams with a cross-section of 90x40 mm. 310, This results in W = 2 ( )/6 = 108,000 mm³, which means that the permissible load is approx. 205 kn. 530, , W :70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 16 (18)
Maximum load Vertical load The maximum vertical force which may be applied to the base bracket mountings is 100 kn (50 kn per side). This applies when the force is applied exactly to the mounting points. F max If the force is applied further forwards, e.g. to front supporting legs, the permissible force is reduced linearly. 80 kn (40 kn per side) applies to a dimension of maximum 1,580 mm in front of the front axle. In order for the front part of the chassis to handle greater forces, some kind of reinforcement is required :70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 17 (18)
Maximum load Limitations for front-mounted equipment Fit the jointed bracket for the front-mounted equipment to point C on the connecting member to avoid a skewed load to the mounting points. The following values must not be exceeded in order to prevent overloading the chassis frame and the brackets: A = From the centre joint to the plough s centre of gravity. C = Centre joint. M = Maximum 2,000 kg. A C L L = Maximum 200 mm (the distance from the centre of the towing pin to the centre joint). M x A = Maximum 3,000 kgm (30 knm) For the bumper version 130 mm or for vehicles prepared for front member, the following applies: L = Maximum 270 mm (distance from the base bracket s attachment plane to the centre joint) M :70-01 Issue 7 en-gb 18 (18)
