1 Page 1 of 28 Section : Instrument Panel and Console REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION 1997 F-150, F-250 Workshop Manual Instrument Panel Removal 1. WARNING: TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE SERVICING OR REPLACING ANY AIR BAG SYSTEM COMPONENTS. TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY TO STARTER RELAY CABLE AND WAIT ONE MINUTE. Remove the battery cables. 1. Remove the battery ground cable (14301). 2. Remove the battery to starter relay cable (14300) and wait one minute for the backup power supply to be depleted. 2. NOTE: On vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, move the shift lever to the 1 position to ease removal. Carefully pry to release the (A) four clips and remove the (B) steering column opening cover. 3. Position the electrical connector aside. Release the push clip from the lower instrument panel steering column cover.
2 Page 2 of Pull to release the three (A) clips and remove the (B) fuse door. 5. Position the hood latch release handle aside. 1. Remove the two hood latch release handle screws. 2. Remove the hood latch release handle. 6. Position the parking brake release handle aside. 1. Remove the two parking brake release handle screws. 2. Remove the parking brake release handle.
3 Page 3 of Remove the instrument panel floor duct panel. Remove two push clips and release one expander clip. 8. Remove the lower instrument panel steering column cover (04459). 1. Remove the six lower instrument panel steering column cover bolts. 2. Remove the lower instrument panel steering column cover (044F08). 9. Remove the LH and RH scuff plates.
4 Page 4 of Remove the LH and RH cowl side trim panels. 11. Disconnect the brake on/off (BOO) switch electrical connector. 12. Remove the (A) radio ground and the (B) GEM/CTM ground. 13. Disconnect the three instrument panel main harness connectors.
5 Page 5 of Remove the bulkhead wiring harness from inside the engine compartment. 1. Loosen the three bulkhead wiring harness electrical connector bolts. 2. Disconnect the three bulkhead electrical connectors. 15. Pull the bulkhead electrical connector handle to disconnect the harness. 16. Disconnect the two air bag diagnostic monitor electrical connectors.
6 Page 6 of Disconnect the inertia fuel shutoff switch electrical connector. 18. Remove the two grounds from the RH cowl. 19. Disconnect the electronic actuator electrical connector. 20. Disconnect the climate control head vacuum line connector.
7 Page 7 of Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement (04502). 1. Remove the four instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement nuts. 2. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. 22. If equipped, disconnect the transmission range indicator from the steering column. 1. Remove the bolt. 2. Disconnect the cable.
8 Page 8 of Lower the steering column (3C529). 1. Remove the four steering column support nuts. 2. Lower the steering column. 24. NOTE: The antenna cable will be removed with the instrument panel. Disconnect the antenna cable from the outside of the vehicle; refer to Section Remove the instrument panel relay cover (044F46). 1. Remove theinstrument panel relay cover. 2. Disconnect the autolamp sensor electrical connector, if equipped. 26. Open the glove compartment and release the two door stops. 27. WARNING: ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REMOVING AND HANDLING AN AIR BAG. WARNING: CARRY A LIVE AIR BAG WITH THE BAG AND TRIM COVER POINTED AWAY
9 Page 9 of 28 FROM YOUR BODY. AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT WILL THEN DEPLOY WITH MINIMAL CHANCE OF INJURY. WARNING: PLACE A LIVE AIR BAG ON A BENCH OR OTHER SURFACE WITH THE TRIM COVER UP. Remove the passenger side air bag module (044A74). 1. Remove the three passenger side air bag module screws. 2. Disconnect the passenger side air bag module electrical connector. 3. Remove the passenger side air bag module. 28. Remove the four RH assist handle screw covers. 29. Remove the four RH assist handle screws. 30. Remove the RH assist handle (31406).
10 Page 10 of Remove the RH windshield side garnish moulding (03598). 32. Remove the instrument panel bolt below and to the left of the glove compartment. 33. Remove both instrument panel bolts behind the passenger side air bag module opening. 34. Remove the two instrument panel bolts on the top of the instrument panel (04304). 1. Remove the two covers.
11 Page 11 of Remove the two bolts. 35. Remove the instrument panel bolt on the relay bracket. 36. Remove the instrument panel bolt below and to the left of the cigar lighter and power point. 37. Remove the instrument panel nut on the bottom RH corner of the instrument panel.
12 Page 12 of Remove the instrument panel nut on the bottom LH corner of the instrument panel. 39. Remove the instrument panel bolt under the center of the steering column. 40. Remove the instrument panel bolt on the bottom LH side of the instrument cluster opening. 41. Remove the instrument panel bolt on the bottom RH side of the instrument cluster opening. 42. Disconnect the (A) air bag sliding contact electrical connectors and the (B) anti-theft sensor electrical connector.
13 Page 13 of Disconnect the remaining electrical connectors on the steering column. 44. Remove the instrument panel from the RH floor brace. 45. NOTE: Two technicians are required to perform this step. Remove the instrument panel.
14 Page 14 of 28 Installation 1. NOTE: Two technicians are required to perform this step. Align and position the instrument panel with the clips in the sheet metal. 2. Connect the air bag diagnostic monitor electrical connectors.
15 Page 15 of Connect the inertia fuel shutoff switch electrical connector. 4. Connect the bulkhead electrical connector harness. 5. Install the bulkhead wiring harness from inside the engine compartment.
16 Page 16 of Install both instrument panel bolts behind the passenger side air bag module opening. Install the RH side first. 7. Install the instrument panel bolt on the bottom LH side of the instrument cluster opening. 8. Install the instrument panel bolt on the bottom RH side of the instrument cluster opening.
17 Page 17 of Install the instrument panel bolt under the center of the steering column opening. 10. Install the instrument panel nut on the bottom LH corner of the instrument panel. 11. Install the instrument panel nut on the bottom RH corner of the instrument panel. 12. Install the two instrument panel bolts on the top of the instrument panel. 1. Install the two bolts. 2. Install the two covers.

Install the instrument panel bolt below and to the left of the glove compartment. 16. Install the instrument panel nut on the RH floor brace.

DOING SO MAY RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, WHICH COULD RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY. WARNING: ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN SERVICING AN AIR BAG VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIR BAG. WARNING: CARRY A LIVE AIR BAG WITH THE BAG AND TRIM COVER POINTED AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT WILL THEN DEPLOY WITH A MINIMAL CHANCE OF INJURY. Install the passenger side air bag module. 1. Position the passenger side air bag module. 2. Install the three bolts. 3. Connect the electrical connector.

Install the instrument panel relay cover. 30. Position the steering column. Install the four steering column support nuts.

Install the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. 1. Position the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. 2. Install the four instrument panel steering column opening reinforcement nuts. 33. Connect the (A) air bag sliding contact electrical connectors and the (B) anti-theft sensor electrical connector.
24 Page 24 of Connect the remaining electrical connectors on the steering column. 35. Install the radio chassis; refer to Section Connect the five radio antenna clips. 36. Connect the electronic actuator electrical connector.
25 Page 25 of Connect the climate control head vacuum line connector. 38. Install the upper instrument panel steering column cover. 1. Position the upper instrument panel steering column cover. 2. Install the bolts. 39. Install the instrument panel floor duct panel. 40. Install the parking brake release handle. 1. Position the parking brake release handle. 2. Install the two parking brake release handle screws.
26 Page 26 of Install the hood latch release handle. 1. Position the hood latch release handle. 2. Install the two hood latch release handle screws. 42. Carefully press the (A) three clips and install the (B) lower instrument panel fuse door. 43. Position the electrical connector. Insert the push clip into the lower instrument panel steering column cover.
27 Page 27 of NOTE: On vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, move the shift lever to the 1 position to ease installation. Carefully press the (A) four clips and install the (B) steering column opening cover. 45. NOTE: When the battery (10655) is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 mi) or more to relearn the strategy. Install the battery cables. 46. Adjust the transmission range indicator; refer to Section
