2 Introduction: KM6-EC Subracks Introduction KM6-EC subracks have been designed and are suitable for high volume, cost sensitive applications. Whilst they are still versatile and fully conform to the requirements of IEC60297, care has been taken to remove certain features found in the KM6-II range to reduce the manufacturing cost. These include lighter extrusion profiles, single-point tiebar fixings (rather than double) and Zintec side plates (rather than aluminium). Features Lightweight and versatile economy range, supplied in kit form for simple yet accurate assembly EMC conversion options Conductive finish Backplane mounting or DIN connectors. Compatible with certain accessories from the KM6-II range EC universally pierced end plates Backplane extrusions Type 1 is a normal version which requires a backplane spacer strip, either insulating or conductive, to maintain the geometry of the subrack. Type 2 is extended to obviate the need for a spacer, this version is acceptable provided there is no need to insulate the backplane from the extrusion. 6 Introduction: KM6-RF subrack systems CompactPCI, PXI and VME64x COMPATIBLE 1 - KM6 Subracks KM6-RF SUBRACK This subrack, an evolution of our successful KM6 range, has been designed to EMC shield electronics systems which operate especially in the higher end of the frequency spectrum. Building on our experience with KM6-II, the first commercially available standard subrack system with a truly retrofit EMC capability, KM6-RF incorporates a number of features which provide additional configuration possibilities whilst addressing the latest mechanical standards. IEC and IEEE /11compatible IEEE /11 introduces some refinements to the existing IEC standards as they apply to subracks and EMC front panels: KM6-RF 3U subrack Style C The geometry of EMC panels and related seals is constrained to ensure interchangeability between manufacturers offerings. A front panel injector/extractor is introduced to help overcome the increased insertion/withdrawal forces encountered in the use of Metric and five row DIN connectors which are gaining ground especially in advanced bus systems such as VME64x and CompactPCI. Along with this handle goes an operating lip on the front extrusions and a system for coding and ESD grounding. Style A Rear cover shell (option) Features Higher level EMC applications Complete kit delivered Heavy duty upgrades KM6-RF Subrack - Construction Style A Version with PCB depth ventilated EMC covers (rear cover shell optional) This version can be used where the backplane forms part of the EMC screen or where it is required to separately enclose the rear wiring area. Style B PCB depth ventilated cover Overall ventilated cover Style B Version with overall ventilated EMC covers and one-piece rear closing panel Provides a complete enclosure with a removable rear panel suitable for carrying interface connectors. Style C with rear transition IEEE Version with interlocking PCB depth covers that span front and rear transition areas. This version is configured from various kits dependent upon the PCB sizes being utilised. Rear closing panel 1.50

7 Introduction: KM6-RF subrack systems KM6-RF SUBRACKS KM6-RF is compatible with IEC and DIN 41494, so it will accept the existing range of guides, front panel and plug-in units. It has, however, a new design of extruded EMC front panel and contact fingers designed to the latest industry standards (IEEE ) to minimise intrusion into the PCB area. Our KM6-RF range complies to the latest PICMG specifications and is, therefore, ideally suited to CompactPCI, PXI and VME64x system builds. Accessories A wide range of accessories add to the versatility of the KM6-RF system. In addition to the subracks, piece parts, guides etc., there is a comprehensive range of compatible panels and plug-in units to address the requirements of both EMC and non-emc applications. KM6-RF subrack Extrusion options Further variations within these three basic styles concern the choices of front and backplane extrusion. Front extrusion options EMC performance graph The graph shows results obtained from testing an empty style B 6U x 84HP x 300 with overall ventilated top and bottom covers, full rear closing panel and front panels Injector/ejector lip IEEE (injector/ extractor) IEC lip Conventional IEC The test was carried out in our own test facility. 8 KM6-RF Subrack: Introduction to rear plug-up Style C Compatible with Ieee and.11 for CompactPCI, PXI and vme64x systems The IEEE standard is a further extension of the core specification IEEE which embraces both IEC and IEEE IEEE standardises and sets out the geometry for the rear plug-up (transition) area of a subrack where previously no standard existed. Rear plug-up - or transition - is used and required within the core specifications of major open-architecture bus structures where a midplane is used to provide a rear I/O interface. This transition formalises the mechanical interface between front and rear plug-up cards or modules based on the Eurocard format. 6U KM6-RF Subrack Verotec s KM6-RF range of subracks, featured on the following pages, integrates both the IEEE and.11 specifications and adopts the inline card principle to provide the high level of EMC attenuation required in modern electronic systems. The basic KM6-RF frame combinations, together with an extensive range of accessories, have been developed to cover most popular subrack sizes and rear I/O requirements and enable the end-user to tailor the finished subrack to suit the specific needs of the application. Should further assistance, or advice on a non-standard, unlisted configuration, be required please contact our sales office or our applications specialists. 3U KM6-RF Subrack KM6-RF Subracks Style C with rear plug-up (transition) area Rear (transition) plug-up unit/front panel Mid plane EMC seals In line configuration for rear (transition) plug-up EMC panels. 19 KM6-RF Subracks: Piece Parts and Accessories Introduction KM6-RF sets out to address the IEEE and 11 specifications whilst providing a high level of EMC shielding performance. A wide variety of complete kits are available, but it is also possible to order in individual piece parts for situations where those kits do not meet your specific requirements. This section shows details at piece part level, including some dimensional information. In general, components are parametic in that it is possible to calculate dimensions of other sizes from a basic standard set of dimensions. For instance, a nominally 84HP extrusion has a standard length of 432,2mm. It can be calculated that a 60HP version is 432,2 - (24 x 5,08mm) = 432,2-121,92 = 310,28mm. With two exceptions which are identified, end conditions are symmetrical at 84HP and should always be referenced to the left hand end viewed from the front. Vertical finger strip Backplane/Motherboard extrusion centre Rear closing panel EMC top/bottom cover Rear extrusion Backplane/ Motherboard extrusion top/ bottom In height (end plates, for instance), a similar calculation will use multiples of 44,45mm - a U, although there are some variations in that rack mounting hole positions do not have a regular increment. Enhanced types use an extruded side cover which incorporates a guide rail top and bottom. They are more robust and provide a higher level of shielding than standard types. They use the standard (version 2) front panels described above with a chromated inner face. 3HP-9HP units have a single left-hand extruded cover (2-Rail) with the right cover being formed metal whilst on 10HP-42HP units, both side covers are extruded (4-Rail). Shielded Front Panels All front panels in this category are manufactured from 2.5mm think extruded aluminium with vertical grain and a clear chromated finish or polyester overlay. They are fitted with a stainless steel EMC finger strip and are available with or without a pre-location pin. Blank panels are supplied with the EMC finger strip fitted but come without fixings. Standard panel kits are supplied with the EMC finger strip fitted and a kit containing fixing screws, metal bushes (for maximum conductivity) and handles. 4HP-9HP width panels have a single screw fixing position top and bottom whereas 10HP-12HP width panels have two screw fixing position top and bottom. Front panel sizes are 3U/6U/9U heights and 4HP-12HP widths with handles being available in Fixed, Ejector or Inject / Eject versions. VXI Front Panels and Modules To support the VXIbus standard, a range of screened C and D size modules and front panels are available with ejector handles to aid easy extracton. 64 VXI Front panels and modules 2 KM6 front panels and plug-in units V X I b u s H A R D W A R E VXI MODULE Features Normal and light duty Single and double width C and D size Easy access In support of the VXIbus, Verotec offer screened modules in two standard forms. Normal duty This module has a relatively high screening capability, and is available in single and double widths, C and D sizes. The double width version moves the circuit board to the right by one slot. This facility is likely to be needed where the skyline on the wiring side is greater than normal - when using wire wrapping assembly, or where additional components are required to be fitted on that side. The module consists of a channel section front panel, incorporating ejector handles and card mounting brackets, ventilated left and right covers and EMC sealing. Connector screening is incorporated in the side covers. The Eurocard sized PCB provides the guide rail facility for the module as required in the specification. The construction of the side covers is such that access to the PCB can be simply gained by the removal of four screws. In order to maintain electrical continuity between the metal side covers it is necessary to incorporate a row of plated through holes along the upper and lower edges of the PCB under the area covered by the RFI sealing strip. The spacing of these holes will obviously affect the degree of screening obtained from the module. In addition, four holes are needed to permit the passage of the fixing screws through the board (drilling details as shown). Continuity between the covers and the front panel is maintained by the incorporation of beryllium copper fingers. More fingers are used to maintain contact between the module and the backplane motherboard ground plane, and between neighbouring modules. All metal components are conductively finished and the front panel has metal inserts to ensure good electrical contact between the module and the subrack. VXI module Connector Area 4 holes ø3,5 Two rows plated through holes The PCB is fitted to the front panel via metal brackets as standard, although plastic brackets are available if they are required. LIGHT DUTY Also in single C size, the light duty module can be provided, without any EMC seals, offering a lower cost solution where EMC screening is con sid ered less of a problem. This unit has our two-part front panel and can be up grad ed by the addition of seals as needed. Connector Area 4 holes ø3,5 Two rows plated through holes. Connector shroud A connector shroud is available, in beryllium copper, that will enhance the screening performance when it is fitted to the fixed connector on the backplane

72 KM6-II Universal and KM6-EC Subracks: EMC Conversion KM6-II EMC conversion kits KM6-II Universal subracks and some sizes of KM6-EC can be retrospectively EMC screened by the addition of covers and suitable front and rear panels. Two Basic types of screening cover are available: OVERALL, (Fig. 1) which provide a screen over both the card area and the rear connector/backplane area. In this version, the rear of the subrack is completed by the addition of conventionally fixed panels, either full width or in combinations of lesser width front panels. PCB AREA ONLY (Fig. 2) This application requires a motherboard/backplane which is specifically designed to provide rear screening using ground plane technology. With this geometry, only the front aperture requires screening panels. Covers are generally available in ventilated and unventilated forms. They are designed to maintain intimate contact with the end plates by means of screws and internal flanges. At the interface with the extrusions, the covers have patented dimples in such a way as to provide an interference fit with a slot in the extrusion. The concept of this slot ensures that the card guide location holes are within the screened area of the subrack and also provides additional screening by introducing a labyrinth around the edge of the cover. A guide to the EMC screening of subracks on page 12 discusses the effects of various configurations on the overall performance, with particular attention to the use of RFI fingers. 79 KM6-II Subracks: Piece parts KM6-II Front Tie Bars KM6-II front tie bars feature a screw fixing system using a unique dowelscrew arrangement which ensures accurate location and subrack rigidity. An additional slot is provided which, when fitted with a tapped strip, enables pcb and module guides to be secured using M2,5 x 5mm screws, thereby offering greater security and strength (see figure 8). Provision is also made for the fitting of dust/emc covers, without the need for additional seals, whilst still maintaining a high level of EMC screening. Normal front extrusions have slot identification printed along their length to aid guide location. Top versions also have a printed ident on the front face for panel location. In addition to the normal front extrusion, there are other types: KM6-II front tie bars PLAIN EMC which has no guide location holes; this extrusion is included in conversion kits and can also be used for just attaching additional panels (e.g. for rear socket mounting). 9,90 Normal LIPLESS which has normal guide location holes but offers two facilities; if used as a height dividing extrusion, it is possible to use overall front panels (see figure 6); it will also fit within an EMC screen, permitting the recessing of cards (see figure 7). 24,00 2,90 49,85 8,50 Lipless These extrusions are supplied in lengths of 84HP and can easily be cut to length to suit other width requirements. 85 KM6-II Subracks: Accessories PCB Grounding Clip This grounding clip can be inserted into the front or rear of 1,6mm pcb guides in KM6 subracks. Features Electrostatic Protection Occupies unused area of Eurocard No screws required Contacts on the clip provide electrical continuity between a suitably equipped Eurocard and, via a spring under the clip to standard front extrusions. Pcb s can, therefore, be grounded before the engagement of connectors. The clip, which is supplied in packs of 10, fits into a pocket in the guide and requires no screw fixings to maintain contact. The modification required to the pcb takes the form of a conductive strip along the edge of the board, either on the left or right side (see illustration). The clip has been tested to IEC 950: 1986 section In testing, the clip reached a steady temperature of 76 degrees C at 15A, with a resistance path of 7mΩ. A typical electrostatic discharge would be 12A for a period of 1 microsecond.
