2 Product Feature Graphic Voltage Controller (GVC) Electrical GVC controls can maximises the voltage to increase collection efficiency and regulate power to maintain proper condition of the ESP. The GVC controller has the most sophisticated keypad display screen that can access up to 90 transformer-rectifier controllers, and it allows for easy monitoring of the ESP.

Smart operation mode Reducing back corona - Including Intermittent Activation (IE-pulsing primary voltage supply), the controller can reduce the power supply before the current exceeds the level that will lead to back corona, and reenergize when it returns to normal level. Spark & Arc sensing - GVC will detect and report spark and arc condition. When sparking occurs, the set back function will lower the voltage automatically to reduce the possibility of internal damage caused. Multifunction support It s comprehensive and sophisticated graphic display, it allow users to understand the ESP conditions easily by presenting important values such as sensing control, alarm, voltage feedback, and operation parameter on keypad. 4 Case Study Controller Upgrade Graphic Voltage Controller Application 2x300MW Coal Fired Power Plant in Philippines; ESP 1 has EPIC-II (Unit 1 ESP installed in 1984) and MCS-I (Unit 2 ESP installed in 1995). Problem 1. No support from original suppliers of controllers. 2. Spare parts are obsolete and have limited availability and compatibility. 3. Also, the controllers have been in use for many years, thus raising concerns on reliability and the effect on ESP efficiency. Solution Tai & Chyun proposed to replace the old controllers with GVC and to maximize the functions of the control system & increase the collection efficiency of the ESP. Thus, GVC are installed in all the fields and one SCADA was already installed for monitoring and controlling of Unit 1. GVC can reduce the operating power input during the CE rapping thereby enhancing the cleaning of dust from collecting electrode. ESP problems can be easily determined by the VI curve plotting. SCADA can help save time and cost for site personnel making maintenance convenient with monitoring & restore prompt.

6 Troubleshooting Dealing with sparks Causes and Solutions Spark is one of the major issues in the operation of the Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP). Let us try to understand what a spark is, its causes, effect and preventions. A spark is a sudden rush of localized electric current through the gas layer between the collecting electrodes and the discharge electrodes. When sparks occur at frequent intervals and for a longer period of time, it is called an arc. In worst case, heavy sparking may lead to short circuit in ESP and damage its internal parts.

7 Troubleshooting - Sparks The causes of a spark are as follows: Dust resistivity - Spark rates tend to increase during high dust resistivity. Hopper full - Dust filled hopper thus upreaching near DE will lead to heavy sparking and thus reduced voltage and current leading to low collection efficiency. Air in-leakage - Air in-leakage through access doors will lead to additional moisture and cold air into the ESP. This difference in the temperature and moisture will cause the sparking to occur in the ESP. Misalignment (breaking) of electrodes - The misalignment of the discharge electrodes and the collecting electrodes leads to the close contact of the two polarities. When the electrodes break, they may come into contact with each other polarity and start off the sparking within the ESP. : Evidence of sparks on ESP mechanical part : Hopper clogging - one root cause of spark in ESP Disadvantages of Spark: Decrease in the voltage and current - In order to quench sparking, the controller will reduce the voltage. The ESP cannot run at full capacity, thereby leading to low performance of the ESP. Decrease in the collecting efficiency - When serious sparking occurs, the field tends to trip off, or the voltage is reduced to prevent excessive sparking. Thus, the collecting efficiency is paralyzed for the time period. Breaking of Electrodes- Sparking creates high tension which causes the electrodes to break. Increase in the cost of maintenance - Sparks destroy the ESP parts, for example, breaking of electrodes or burn marks. These broken parts need to be replaced with new ones, increasing the maintenance costs. Also, in order to replace these parts, the ESP needs to be shut down, thus causing a loss to the ESP owners. As we all know, ESP is a high voltage and high temperature confined space equipment. Thus, studying the spark in an ESP is quite a difficult job. Nowadays, ESPs come with spark rate meter to allow the users to easily sense sparking. Also, a lot of different voltage controllers with various features are present in the market. Voltage controllers can allow users to easily detect spark and its causes. Even with diagnosis on a problem before it causes more destruction! Voltage controllers detect sparks, and can decrease the voltage provided to the ESP in order to quench the spark.
